I was prepared for a titanic struggle in 1942 but the Rostov pocket was the first in a series of large pockets that ended the game.
Here is the second and third.
Before, I had always tried to complete an encirclement in one turn or the prey get away. What seems to be the case is if you get close the AI runs but only halfway they don't.
Here is the development of one on the first furn. I did not not have enough strength to get through.

Okay Here is the beginning of turn 41 for the northern pocket. The AI didn't run but also didn't reinforce much.

This pocket was very satisfying to make! Those guys tormented me all winter!!

This is the start of the southern pocket. The AI reacted strongly to the move last turn. This turn I change directions to help the efforts north.

I spent the next 5 turns clearing the pockets in the mud. Here is the situation at the beginning of the first clear turn.

With the alternating mud/clear turns it took a while to clear these pockets but the end was near. Here are the positions, etc. at the end.
