I realize I am jumping in a little late to this thread but I heard how good they were so I tried to use them once as strike aircraft and they were decimated and I havent tried since. YMMVHas anyone ever seen a strike of PBYs not score a hit? I cant say that I have.

And I have played AE for 3 or 4 years now.

I still think they are overated with the average Catalina pilot in the first week of the war having just 20% experience and having such deadly accuracy verses any other naval torpedo bomber on either side.After all they are supposed to be search planes not naval torpedo bombers. lol

Catalina probably would have made a better torpedo plane than the devastator..
it's better to launch two stones than one stone
... and they are both equally slow, but Catalina has lots of range

funny thing is... if the pacwar had taken place around 1938 or so,
the PBY would have been a pretty excellent torpedo plane (against a CAP of those biplane carrier fighters [:D])
.. and before the mighty 25mm AA was in widespread use [:D]
