I disagree with everything that is said in this thread. You guys are wrong.

Special pleading?

Trolling should be legal. Like all discussion forms on the internet, it does have some adverse health effects, but trolling is different from other ways of expressing oneselves. Many have benefited from the effects of trolling.

Misconduct, as this thread seems to be as good as any other to go off topic:

Is silent hunter IV now what SH III was after a couple of modders went over it big time?
SH III was my favourite game for a long time but not in the stock version but with the Grey Wolves Mod with
about every part of the game changed for realism. It was a sensational piece of work.

Is something like GW now existing for SHIV? (heard that SHV was/is crap so I don´t even bother about buying that one)

Silent Hunter IV is much improved over SH 3, the mods have in fact made SHIV pretty decent (there are however some issues still) like later in the war entire convoys get jammed up in Japan. There isn't GW For SH4 yet, I still play SH3 in tournaments with GW and only GW. Some of the big mods are Trigger Maru, Real Fleet Boat and Fall of the Rising Sun, all which do incredible job at making it historically accurate.

I would gamble on SH4 if you can get it cheap, however I would stay away from SH5, its a total piece of crap.

I believe there are 3 active SH4 tournaments, with the 3 mods, Sh3 only has two active both are GW's with 100% realism and other is 50%

Thanks, this sounds really good. I will try it out. Should I be aware of any known issues with W7?

I can also recommend SH3 supermod NYGM, which is also quite good and bit less hardware-intensive than GWX (since it only changes gameplay and lacks graphical improvements ow GWX).

It's just too bad that I know the idea that trolling should be legal makes no sense to you, but that's only because you're a WITP:AE player. WITP:AE players cannot understand the benefits of trolling phenomena. This is even more so for Silent Hunter players.

Trolling should be taxable. Maybe 2 cents per word? [:D]

Not sure about W7 issues, I have had none myself, I have Vista and W7 and both act retarded at times, but I can't point to anything directly other then the game usually crashes once in a while. Happens in AE also, but I can't really say its from anything indirectly.

I have some crashing issues with w7 when running SH4 when I never had crashes under vista.  I also likes a couple of mods, real fleet boat for one, and it crashes constantly under w7.  Remove the mod and crashes scale WAY back.

Yeah I run a few mods for SH3 and Sh4 and they randomly crash without warning, I guess its in the design.
Its sad, both games could of been improved, but we are dealing with Ubisoft I mean give them some credit at least you can "play" you just have to save like crazy.

Can't be as bad as Red Baron 2.

Thanks both of you.
mullk have you tried installing it in another folder than program files? W7 is reportedly a bit strange when using the standart program folder
if you don´t have complete admin rights and write access in the OS

I own 1, 3, and 4. Number 3, when modded, is by far the best of the lot. (But you have to play the bad guys.) I had great hopes for #4, but it was horked out of the box, and the various mods couldn't really fix what was wrong because the Romanian designers just don't get the USN. Too many glaring errors if you know anything about uniforms, culture, terminology, etc. Also, they (stupidly IMO) failed in the basic design decision of how to deal with the vast distances of the PTO. The transits to and from the patrol areas are torture, even with accelerated time. And they never, at least when I stopped playing and deleted #4, got the fuel consumption close to right. A transit at a standard bell and you had a couple of days in the patriol area. Some basic research into public access patrol reports would have given them direction on this.

#3 with the Greywolves mods is a lot of fun, and what #3 should have been out of the box. Just make sure if you go that way you get a non-Starforce version, or remove it ASAP if you must go for the original. Starforce was evil incarnate.

I might check into it or dl the demo. Hear a lot about it and the screens and videos look fun that I look at.

#3 with the mods is definitely worth your time. For example, modders put in the entire length of the Kiel ship canal, making access to the Atlantic take much less fuel and game time. They put in whole cities along the way, bridges, buoys, etc. Really amazing modding. Number 3 will also make clear how much geography was destiny for the U-boats. Running the English Channel in early 1940 is fun. Running it in 1943 is maybe a 50-50 proposition. When you start a campaign and get to 1944 or so, it's a lot like playing the Japanese in AE. It's not if, but when.

I never run the channel. Just a little to risky for my blood. But I'm usually in one of the French ports, 7th flotilla. I think SH IV is okay even with it's flaws. I had just finished a patrol the other day for the first time in over a year. WitP-AE has been my obsession. SH III is on my XP next to the Vista so I can sometimes run a U-boat patrol while WitP-AE is running on the other. SH IV and WitP-AE are both on the Vista so they have to split time, WitP-AE getting the lions share.
Both SH III and SH IV are worth every penny IMO.

the last sub sim i played was the original Silent Hunter! (and more with Silent Service II)

oh if only there were more hours in the day. So many games....so little time in life.

Well said. Work seems to get in the way of my spare time. It is odd that when I was laid off for 8 MONTHS [X(] that I didn't play so much. Now that I'm with another firm I play much more. Hmmm. Though allegedly I'm still part time. Tonight won't be much better. Start of the WCHA play-offs (college hockey) and the Sioux at home against Michigan Tech. Should be a cake walk. Beat them in the last regular season series by a total of 17-3.
I loved the original Silent Hunter. SH II, well I guess I was pretty spoiled from the original and thought it was lacking. Until SH III arrived. Then all was well with the world.
