OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Dec 29, 41
Sumatra:
- Well, Palembang is at last invaded. I should have ordered the invasion fleet to full speed in order to arrive
at its target before Steven reinforced it. Reinforcements are already loaded on transports and should be
arriving in a few days.
Althought I couldn't see a minefield, I thought there would be one and unfortunately I was correct. I sent 3 DMS'
in the previous turn but they were sunk by Vilderbeasts. 3 more are on their way. Still, the mines,
together with CD guns, claim two transports and one DMS. Several other vessels are damaged.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 30, 41
I sent SubDiv2 (5 subs with two Glens, normally opeating with KB) to go looking for American carriers off the SE Australian coast and they found CV Enterprise near Sydney! But alas, one torpedo was not enough to do the deed. Sydney is only a few hexes away and Enterprise will live to fight another day...I hope at least it's severely damaged.

Steven got his revenge by torpedoing BB Nagato. 5-8 Allied DDs are off the HI, I sent two BBs to deal with them, but instead of the DDs they found subs. From now on I will let Vals and Betties of the 12th Air Flotilla to deal with the suicidal allied destroyers. It will speed up their training. AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 31, 41
Palembang: Waiting for the 38th Division, which still is 5-6 days away. Meanwhile, my minesweepers must have cleared over 300 mines. I lost 3 DMS', which brings the total to 7, 3 are damaged and doubtful to make it home. I am bringing more minesweepers from other "fronts", since they will be needed in the DEI anyway.
Solomons/New Guinea: Curiously, an allied TF containing two CVs was spotted 15 hexes south of Port Moresby. My own CVs are sitting east of Rabaul. So, having damaged the Enterprise in the previous turn and now having spotted a carrier TF, I know where at least two of the American CVs are (and where they are not).
Meanwhile, the 90th Inf. Rgt is on its way to reinforce PM. The TF transporting it is currently off Saipan.
Buna is captured.
Allied DD Raid off the HI: My Vals and Betties managed to sink two deastroyers. The 6 remaining are constantly on the move, accompanied by submarines, possibly trying to lure a surface combat TF.
Malaya: Captured Georgetown and Mallacca. There are 1500 allied troops blocking the railroad to Johora Bharu. I need to mop them up in order to bring units of the 25th Army to Johora Bahru by rail.

And a note on production:
My overall supply is 250k less than what I had on Dec. 7th. Is this normal?
I 've only modestly expanded Naval Shipyards and HI (about 100 points each), more than doubled vehicles and producing over 500 aircraft.
Fuel and oil is still a problem, since I have only captured Miri and have not setup a tanker convoy yet. Its oil center is still not repaired, I did unload enough supplies it seems.
Resources: Made a few adjustments to my original convoy setup and only now the resource stockpile in the HI is stabilized.

Summary of last 7 turns (Jan.1st - Jan.7th):
Sumatra:: Reinforcements arrived at Palembang in the form of the 38th Division and a fragment of 124th Regiment, bringing my total AV to 850-900, more than enough to beat the allied garrison. A bombardment was launched in the previous turn and it's clear that Palembang will become part of the Empire in the next turn.
1st Raiding Regiment landed by air at Benkoelen. It was empty.
Osthaven was also invaded by a small SNFL, an invasion which didn't go too well. The base was empty, but again I made a mistake by not setting my Zero CAP to use drop tanks and of course they did not fly. As a result Vilderbeasts based at Batavia sunk 2 APs and damaged a few other smaller vessels. Oh well.
Solomons/New Guinea: The suspected American CV have retreated. A BB also briefly appeared SE of Ocean Island, which, if true, means that an American BB is already operational. While KB was distracted, a small allied transport TF brought reinforcement to PM, bringing its garrison up to 12k. I am also bringing two infantry regiments soon and am keeping KB nearby.
Darwin: The enemy tried to reinforce/resupply Darwin, but it was difficult to do so under my Netty umbrella. Several allied APs, AKs and TKs are sunk and 3500 ground troops are drown, while trying to unload at Darwin. Half of the transports survived though, bringing the garrison up to 17k.
Allied DD Raid off the HI: An allied destroyer taskforce is engaged by 1 Japanese CA, 1 CL and 3 DDs. I thought the days of allied destroyer marauding were over, but in the next turn another DD appeared off Saipan, just when I was ready to take Guam. The Guam Invasion was postponed. Overall, the enemy raids cost me just 3 SCs and a damaged Nagato.
Luzon: My troops just entered Manilla. Its garrison is 15k strong, it won't fall easily. The bulk of the 14th army is preparing for Clark Field.
DEI: Makasar has fallen, Denpasar is next. Also, launching a smaller invasion at Balikpapan. Yet another transport TF is trashed by an allied SC TF, thanks to my neglecting to provide cover. I had ordered a cruiser TF to follow, but its commander chose to return to port for rearming. No ground troops were lost.
China: Finally, the strong Chinese concentration NW of Sinyan is beaten. 11th Army can now exploit towards Nanyang, while 1st Army marches to Sian. There are 220k Chinese troops in Loyang+Tsiaotso+Chengchow and I intent to encircle them.
Meanwhile, the 13th Army has beaten 30k Chinese to take Chungshien. Wenchow is next.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 08, 42
Sumatra:
Palembang fell and its facilities are completely intact! The allied garrison fled to the SE, towards Osthaven, which is now in my hands, and they will be dealt with after I give my units a short rest. The 38th Div will head to Malaya to take part in the Siege of Singapore.
The invasion of Osthaven was a disaster. I relied on land based Zero to provide LRCAP but they did not fly for two consecutive turns. As a result, I lost 7 APs, a CL is crawling back to Saigon badly damaged and 1/2 of a SNFL unit was lost at sea.

Makassar has developed into a major hub and a jump off point for the southern arm of the invasion (2nd Div). Pontianak will be the be the jump off point of the northern arm (21st Div). Semarang will be the main target, but I also want to control both tips of Java (Merak and Benjoewangi) to mine them in order to trap allied shipping based at Sorebaja and Batavia. Preliminary invasions will be launched at Denpassar and SE Borneo (Belikpapan and Badjermasin).
4 BBs, 8 CAs, 4 CLs and over 30 DDs will be involved. Mini KB, 22nd and 13rd Air Flotillas will provide air cover.
Meanwhile Mini KB launched a port attack on Sorebaja. Next, it will move northwest to deal with two allied SC TFs near Batavia:

China:
My war in China begins in earnest, as my forces are now nicely concentrated where I want them. The plan is to encircle 200k Chinese troops currently defending Loyang, Chengchow and Tsiaotso.
I only want to take the latter, in order to anchor the left flank of my advance to Sian on a fairly secure line (Tsiaotso-Kafieng) behind the river and to free up two divisions of the 1st Army, which once freed will advance west and cross the river and envelop the Chinese concentration from NW.
So far, Tsiatso is a tough nut to crack. The first one took place several turns ago and it was a failure, causing damge to both sides and leaving my troops in need of a rest. This attack produced better results:

So far my subs haven't performed as well as I would like them to. Part of the reason is that I have 9 subs operating near and around the Fiji Islands and Pago Pago and they haven't spotted any allied TF at all for many turns now. This turn was an exception:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese Ships
SS I-2
Allied Ships
AG Aldebaran, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
AG Aldebaran is sighted by SS I-2
SS I-2 attacking on the surface
Just when I was thinking of redeploying these subs to the West Coast or Hawaii, I sink an AG.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enemy subs would be lethal if they had good torpedoes. I estimate there are more than 15 enemy subs operating around the HI, 5 operating between Formosa and Luzon and 5 around Truk. My ASW is pathetic so far. Sub Chasers spot enemy subs bur are more likely to be attacked by them than attack. Two enemy subs are shown as sunk so far.

That's a great bombardment result. I don't know if you're aware or not of using your CA and CL search planes as spotters during a bombardment? Depending on whether you are bombarding during the night or day phase just set your float planes to recon of the target hex, even if currently out of range and when your bombardment TF arrives it will benefit from the eyes in the sky. Just remember to set your planes to either day/night operations in conjuction with your time of arrival, or even set to both to be on the safe side.

Thanks, I was not aware of it, although I think I must have read it somewhere in this forum. What I can't figure out is how to set your bombardment TF to arrive at night. Sometime it does, sometimes it arrives during the day.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 10, 42
Production:
CVL Shoho was finished 2 days ago and currently upgrades and resizes its air groups. Sending 3 destroyers from Formosa to escort it to the DEI, where it will merge with Mini-KB.
Three Unyo Class CVs are accelerated. Musashi is still halted. Naval points are at equilibrium.
Resource and fuel stockpiles are slowly increasing, all I have to do now is to get them where they are needed.
Supply is reduced across the board by 450k since the start of the game.
Borneo:
Balikpapan invaded. I had no idea that it was mined and that it had 120cm guns. 3 transports are heavily damaged. Fortunately I only committed crappy transports for this invasion. The base was captured and its facilities are almost intact (only 10 damaged oil centers and refineries):

- Denpassar invaded. The unloading taskforce is attacked by dutch bombers, but avoids being hit.
- I saw two large allied TFs, one in Sorebaja and one in Batavia and I assumed the enemy is trying to evacuate the large ABDA warships, before I close the door. I sent Mini-KB after the TF near Batavia but it attacked a lesser TF. Still, better than nothing. The allied DDs and CLs were spotted 10-15 hexes west of Sumatra coast. Too late to catch them now. On the other hand, the allied DDs near Sorebaja did not travel far, they are probably damaged. I will chase them.

Summary, Jan.13 - Jan. 18
Southeast Fleet:
- Port Moresby fell on the 13th and the allied troops retreated northwest. 90th Inf.Rgt immediately loaded on transports to invade Horn Island, which fell on the 17th, bringing its 1500 strong garrison to my pow camps.
- A naval guard unit is half the way to Tulagi, which my recon says is empty.
4. Fleet:
- Guam fell.
Java:
- Finally, the invasion of Java is underway. The main landing force landed at Semarang. 1st Raiding Rgt airlanded at Merak and a naval guard took Banjoermin. Both tips of Java are mined.
- The Dutch bombers tried to intervene but were decimated by my CAP. Between, Singapore, Bavia and Sorebaja, there are only 10-15 bombers and 15 fighters left.
Malaya:
25th army is still resting at Johore Baru.
Burma:
A funny thing happened here. Pegu was empty of allied troops and automatically changed ownership, almost trapping the allied force retreating from Moulmein. The enemy then moved the Rangoon garrison to retake Pegu, leaving Rangoon empty. The next turn, Rangoon automatically changed ownership and it is now mine.
I am losing one VP per turn, because I can't meet its garrison requirements.
China:
- Tsiaotso fell. The Chinese retreated towards Loyang.
- Nanyang has become the center of focus. There are 80000 Chinese troops there, the enemy reinforced Nanyang from the outside and not from the Loyang-Changchow area, which still contains some 200000 Chinese.
I launched two shock attacks already which caused casualties for both sides, but it looks like Nanyang will fall soon. I am bringing two additional divisions from Wuchang.
Phase 2:
I am starting to review my options for Phase 2. Lots of possibilities, but I think I have a pretty firm idea on where I should focus. It's pretty much in line with my overall war aims outlined in the first page of this AAR. More will be revealed when the time is right.

What I forgot to mention in my previous update is that KB refueled near Shortlands a few turns ago and headed south to what will probably be its only raid of this kind in the entire war. I felt uneasy about sending it deep into enemy territory to achieve only a few tactical (at best) results. But there was also a strategic rationale to try just ONE raid with KB.
Firstly, there is a psychological effect: demonstrating a willingness to go beyond the established "perimeter", inducing a sense that no waters or bases can be considered safe for the allies and consequently commit resources to protect them.
Secondly, I strongly suspect that CV Enterprise is at Sydney, recovering from a torpedo attack, some 10 days ago.
Of course there is a risk. There must be 3 American CVs somewhere (excluding Enterprise). I think there is at least one in southeast Australia, but this is mere speculation. The fact is that I don't know where the American CVs are, except perhaps for Enterprise, which I know is in the the shipyard.
I have 4 subs with 2 Glens in this area looking for them. Nothing found so far.
So, a port attack attack on Sydney will be launched.
Java:
The first wave landed at Semarang. The Dutch airforce tried once again to intervene, but mini-KB is there to protect the landing. 3 allied PTs 4-5 subs were also sent. 2 subs are sunk, but he got a complete reading of mini-KB.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Jan 20, 42
Kido Buttai:
KB approached Sydney from southeast. It was spotted a few turns ago near Numea heading south toward New Zealand. It then turned west toward Sydney and remained unspotted for the last two turns. Glens reconed Sydney and reported 38 fighters, 50 bombers and 85 ships in port, including plenty of APs, 2 DDs, but no CV. I launched the strike anyway.
The allied CAP is 46 P-40s. Although they are higher than my Zeros, they arrive at the battle incremental and are destroyed piece-meal. I lose 1 Zero to 30 P-40s and the strike breaks through easily. Here are the results:

If there are carrier aircraft reported as destroyed on ground, you can be certain, that the CV in question is sunk. In fact, reports of aircraft destruction are a pretty good way of confirming sinking for any ships that carry any aircraft, including searchplanes.

Thanks FatR, the sinking of the bug "E" is confirmed by my opponent.
The last few turns were not particularly good for the Allies. We 've now reached January 23 and this trend continued.

Jan. 21 1942:
The turn started with one of my subs sinking DD Smith near Suva. Overall, it was a quite turn. B-17s raided Port Moresby again, but this time they were met by 4 Zeros, based at Fischaven. 3 B-17s were destroyed.
Kido Buttai was ordered to launch a second strike on Sydney but didn't due to bad weather.
In Java, 21 Div is marching to Sorebaja, capturing empty bases. 2 Div will also land at Semarang in a few turns.
In Malaya, 25 Army is half way to Singapore. 4 Div is unloaded in Mersing. 38 Div to follow in about a week.
A naval guard unit invades Tulagi.
In Burma, the British used trains to get out of my way. It seems they will leave Burma undefended.
In China, the battle of Nanyang is still unresolved.
