Judging from the turn limit, it seems hard too finish. I also understand that this is another game that no one, not even the developers, played all the way through. Who knows what kind of trouble awaits near the endgame. I would be very frustrated, too say the least, if the game crashes after the 1200th turn. I will wait a bit, and see how it plays out.

I picked up the game despite some reservations the price was right for a game as epic in scale as this. I've been tooling around with the smaller scenario's so far I'm waiting for the 1st patch before I dive into a grand campaign. I just hope the future patches will work over current games like WITP AE patches do because starting the game over for every patch would suck.

Meh, I hate to sound like a contraian. But I tried the demo and nothing cicked for me. I like the battles and I like how you build armies and navies. But as far as likes that is where it ends. It is not that this game is bad. It's just that this field of game has another entry in Victoria which does everything else better. The map is better, the economic system is better, the number of events swamp PON. The time period is longer and in PON you can only play as eight nations.
After some patches and the price drops I might pick this up since I love the time period but the demo did nothing to convince me that it can challenge Victoria for best grand strategy game of the time period.

PoN is not strictly a grand strategy game because it uses operational wargame aspects and that is where it excels. It includes some abstracted grand strategy elements as well but it won't be as "grand" as Victoria. It lacks events because it wants us to play historically and less sandbox as Victoria.
Victoria on the otherhand is the grand strategy game of the era with abstracted combat.
It's depends on what you want to play? Detail combat or detailed nation building? Historical or non-historical?

I just wish they'd do some kind of separate program that walked you completely through supply, because I still have not figured out yet, why some units go out of supply.

The battles are great but I felt the game could do more. The instructions are non existant

Only having 8 nations to play in PON is a big plus for me.
With only 8, each really feels different and not cloned. And frankly, 19th century wasn't exactly fun for the Minor or Colonized. To make Tibet or Switzerland fun to play you'd have to change the power system far to the ahistorical.

100% agreed. The ability to play any nation in Paradox's games is bogus as a selling point.

And it's turn based...unlike Paradox's very odd continous time idea...in a grand stratgey game...who thought of that?

Why not? There will be many years that you will spend waiting for something to happen, for a technology to develop, for money to accumulate.
Time accelleration is better than clicking END TURN several times.

It works and it works very well once you get used to speeding up and slowing down the simulation.
It does not work in Hearts of Iron where it goes by hour by hour. I hated that series since I bought the first one a decade ago.

Reading on AGEOD's forums, they are looking at DLC that would include more playable nations ("minor") like say 2 new nations per patch as quoted from PhilThib's post...
"Plans for DLC are definitely in now, and I am not allowed to tell...yet
What we plan to do hower is to bring new 'minor' nations as playable for free with each patch...may be 2 at a time (which allows us to include some fun things for the added nations too

)"
Now I still don't have this game, but was wondering what it played like? Some say it is a massively souped up Age of Imperialism, while others give a nod to it being a turn-based Vicky. For you guys that already are fooling around with it, what would you say it is more like in comparison?

Never played AoI. Vicky II is a beautiful game. PoN appears more difficult and time consuming to play, which is not a bad thing for some. The 12-turn demo won't convince everyone either.
I also believe there is a mod to play any other nations and instructions on the forum (I don't have right now) on how to mod it yourself.
For $20, I had to go for it. It appears to offer so much more than the previous Ageod releases. I hope I am right, as I got bored with their ACW and Nappy releases. But the real question is, will I have the time to play it?

Well, I went for it! Don't have time to dig into it today, but will have the next two days to give it a whirl. Looking forward to another grand strategy turn based game. With my wife around, realtime games just don't work.

The interface takes some getting use to but I am enjoying the game. I would recommend to anyone interested in the period but it will take a large amount of time to learn this game.
