Day 5
All in all, a bad day for Japan. Enemy surface raiders made it all the way into the port of Keijo. I had set up lots of delaying SCTFs consisting of SCs and Es try to eat up enemy ops-points, but still a group got through. A good thing then that I had moved the valuable ships up north to Cinnampo where they unloaded their cargo (2 Air HQs and 3 Baseforces from China).
I had also stood down all fighters at Keijo and moved the valuable ones north to Cinnampo. The two hexes I defended were Cinnampo and the base next to soviet union. At both these bases we were unloading some very important cargo, and both these bases were saved. However, I lost alot of fighters today over Keijo, despite not having units there, it was leaking CAP from Cinnampo, two hexes away. Really annoying to lose alot of Ki94IIs because of leaking cap.
The enemy fighter sweeps were interesting. As I suspected, he was targeting Keijo with huge sweeps, 100 P47Ns and 150 P38s. But Osaka was also hit very hard with 300 P1Hs and 100 P47Ns
Was really depressed to see 14 Okhas get through the enemy CAP at Nago, only to have them all miss their targets. If the fortunes of war had been different, Nemo would have 1-3 heavily damaged BBs now.
Nemo was frustrated about hitting empty air again with his huge sweeps. I can understand this frustration, and it takes a toll on the pilots. Im suspecting his sweeping fighter units have pretty high fatigue right now. His P51Hs have been sweeping every day since the beginning of the war at close to max range.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
Day 6 - the B29's hit Osaka
Well, if yesterday was a bad day for Japan, today was a good day. I was expecting the big airstrike to come today, and it did. In the previous days, Nemo has sent large sweeps over Osaka, first 100, then close to 300. I have avoided defending Osaka because I dont want to fight his best P51H-wings if I dont absolutely have to. At the same time, it is only a matter of time before he sends in the B29s to take out the industry at Osaka.
Yesterday, I thought all the signs pointed towards a big mission today. Hard to say exactly what made me think that. A combination of a gut feeling and the fact that he had been mounting consecutive fighter sweeps with larger and larger units, and the previous targets for his B29s, Amami Oshima, was prepped enough and ready to fall. I also believe Nemo is becoming more and more frustrated that Im not trying to defend against his sweeps, and that this lead to him wanting to force me to defend by going after the HI that is so crucial for my production.
SO, I decided to fight today, and I pulled all my best fighter units into Osaka and ordered them to CAP. And, as luck would have it, today was the day the B29s came to town...unescorted.

As you can see, it could have been alot worse, but our radar was not quite up to the job, as usual.
More came, and the intercepting fighters performed worse and worse.

And then, after several hours of fighting, came the P47s. At this point in time, my CAP had been reduced by fatigue, damage and morale, and not many fighters took to the air. Still we managed to shoot down 10 P47s today over Osaka.

By the way, now that he's found and fixed your major defenses to Osaka, what are your plans for defending other HI-intensive hexes? I'd expect a 'switcharoo' here at any time now.

He lost roughly 50 B29s today. 44 from air, and about 10 more from ops.

ETA: What is that, about 20% kills on the B29s in one raid? Completely unsustainable IRL. Losses like that would get an air boss fired and a strategic campaign stood down for months on end.

RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
SO, I decided to fight today, and I pulled all my best fighter units into Osaka and ordered them to CAP. And, as luck would have it, today was the day the B29s came to town...unescorted.
Kudos! I can't remember the last time anyone managed to out-guess Nemo like that.

Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

Well, Nemo is downplaying the losses in our email conversations. He claims to have 300 B29s in the pools (that could very well be true) and he will start rotating units now to send in 600 heavies every day against Japan.
That is a plan I had too when I was playing as the allies, unfortunately it doesnt work that way. Damaged aircraft, pilot morale and fatigue prevents continuous operations on that scale. Nemo can bring his B17s and B24s into the equation however and that would allow him to keep up the pressure like that.
Anyway, the losses yesterday seems to have struck a nerve, and Im expecting huge operations tomorrow. At the same time I have decided to stand down my best fighter units. The battle over Osaka did not cost me alot of planes or pilots, but alot of my best fighters are damaged, and fatigue is in the 20s for some units.
So, tomorrow we rest, and we hope that the enemy will concentrate on fighter sweeps mostly.

Day 7
Yesterday I had ordered night attacks on the airfield at Iwo Jima. I was expecting the P51Hs from there to sweep Osaka, so I wanted to disrupt operations there to minimize any sweep over Osaka from there. Naturally my bombers failed to fly yesterday, but today the attack came. It seems to have been somewhat of a surprise as Nemo only had one night-fighter unit on CAP.

All in all, the attack did not do that much damage. I believe the total number of destroyed aircraft on my intel screen was between 40-45. However, Nemo lost 18 P51Hs today, and those are his first combat losses for that type. The P51H is his best fighter and it is the only one that can stand up to my Ki94IIs, so I welcome all those losses, at least that is 18 less fighters I will face over Tokyo one day.Night Air attack on Iwo-jima , at 108,77

Yes. Blah blah blah, Nemo. If you could have sent 600 bombers, you woulda. If you're (Nemo) suggesting that somehow getting a bunch of your B29 blasted from the skies redoubles your interest in strategic bombing, I don't think anyone's buying it. You got stung-just face the defeat. Losing 50 B29s doesn't strengthen your hand, pique your interest in strategic bombing or somehow fit into your masteroika-it's just a loss heaped upon you by a capable opponent. No need to justify or downplay it. Move on, dude.
@ PH: 6 more disastrous days like that and he'll have exhausted his B29 pools. He won't be able to replace these in anything resembling a functional time frame for this scenario. Any idea what his replacement rate is? I'd be happy to look it up for you.

RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
Nemo is trying to mess with my head, I try to mess with his, that is all part of the game [:)] To be honest I think it is really fun and adds another dimension to the game.ORIGINAL: Chickenboy

I just have to share a part of our recent email conversation, I dont think Nemo would mind.
Nemo:
Yeah you got a few P-51s but I do get 200+ per month and every time I lost a P47 or P51 in the air I get to replace the 60 skill pilot with an 80 skill pilot. So, it isn't working too badly for me.
Me:
Haha, if that were true then I dont understand why you dont just suicide all of your P47s and P51 against one of my flak-fortresses and upgrade your entire airforce? But I get your point, you have alot of aircraft
I think he has a nightmarish replacement rate for the B29s in this scenario actually. I just went to check it up, 60 replacement + 40 production per month.@ PH: 6 more disastrous days like that and he'll have exhausted his B29 pools. RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
Today Nemo focused almost all his airpower on a single target, and the results were...horrifying.
The destruction of Shanghai.
First came fighter sweeps from a CVTF that took up position three hexes off Shanghai in the Yellow Sea, 140 F4U-1s at 39k. They met no opposition since Im not defending Shanghai against airunits. Then a port-strike of 30 torpedo bombers.
Then came the heavies...
440x B-29-25
130x B-24J
130x B17G
190 A-26C
The bombers were all on airfield attack or port attack. The results...everything gone from the Shanghai docks. I lost 10 tankers that were caught on the wrong side of the Yellow Sea and were hiding from his surface combat TFs. I also lost about 200 aircraft on the ground, mostly transports that were moving units from China to Korea.
But that is not really a big deal. Sure it is bad to lose tankers and transports, but Shanghai is a side-show. I only want to deny him the use of the port, and that I can achieve with ground units.
But then there was this...
That really shocked me. I do not know how to defend against that. Or to be honest, there is no defence against that. That in turn means that there is not a single island that I can defend. If and when he commits his heavy bombers to ground attack, there is nothing to do.
I will have to make plans accordingly.

The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.

sort of sounds like the Panzer-Lehr Division in Normandy after the carpet-bombing.....
RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
Yeah...
So, after careful consideration: Today, we fight.
After the annihilation of Shanghai, the true might of the US airforce has been displayed. It is quite clear that
Nemo can select one base per day and completely destroy everything there. There is precious little I can do to prevent
operations like that. If I had mounted a serious defence of Shanghai with 400 fighters, I would have lost all those 400
fighters and taken out perhaps 50 US bombers and 50 fighters. I must continue to struggle for time. Right now I have
about 300 first-class fighters that are as good as, or even better than, the US best fighters. That means I can defend
one hex, one day. I need to buy more time so we can build more such fighters.
So, how to buy some time? I need to slow down the operational tempo of Nemos airforce. There are three ways to achieve this.
1) To destroy or damage his operational units
2) To destroy or damage his bases
3) To halt or disrupt his flow of supplies to the bases
1 and 3 are pretty hard to achieve, 1) mostly because his units are better than mine and he has more of them and 3) because
I have precious little ships left and he can destroy my navy five times over in a single day with one of his 5-6 CVTFs.
So, 2 then. And there is a good target. Amami Oshima. Nemo has flown in 300 fighters and 300 auxillaries according to my recon
at the same time, the airfield is relatively small 3 (3) and is still damaged from the fighting when he captured it. It
currently has around 40 damage. He has some baseforces there, but most of the units there are the combat units that
captured it. That means flak will be relatively light.
The basic plan is pretty simple and consists of 3 stages.
1) Night attack by my heavy bombers to disrupt the fighter units stationed there.
2) Fighter sweeps to attrit his CAP
3) Day bombing attack by dive bombers and torpedo bombers
Basically I will be throwing the kitchen sink at this base, with one very important exception. My Ki94IIs and J7W1s will
all be flying CAP over the airfield Im launching my Ki264-Angels from. I do not want to lose them due to a lucky airfield
attack. I also want to maintain my defensive capacity.
setting up the attack
I am very careful not to show any large gathering of aircraft, so Im moving out all units not directly involved in the
operation while moving in the attack aircraft. That means the level of aircraft on the airfield should look roughly the
same to allied recon. At the same time I will be moving large units of training aircraft into Korea to give Nemo the
impression that Im massing aircraft against his CVTF in the yellow sea.

I'll comment more later, but I think its safe to say I managed to catch Nemo by surprise today

Two thoughts: first, Nemo does not seem to be hiding his CVTF's. Is there anywhere you might make a surface bombardment run while his carriers are elsewhere?
Second, how well entrenched was the Torishima Brigade? Perhaps you can reduce the devastation with some forts.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

I dont have enough ships to make a surface bombardment viable, also Nemo has PTs at most of his bases.
Torishima Brigade was hiding behind lvl 6 forts on an atoll.

RE: Here at the end of all things... (Jap Armaggedon vs Nemo)
September 19th 1945
The day started with a Jap sub putting two torpedos into CV Shangri-La just off the Philippines. Perhaps that was an omen.
During the night, the US CVTF off Shanghai stumbled across a couple of small ASW TFs off Korea, and that was very good news for me. That meant the US CVs were not heading south but east. Had they parked off Amami Oshima, things might have turned out completely differently.
I had sent in a lone DD to disrupt any unprotected shipping at Amami Oshima, and I just have to post this part from the combat replay. That is some guts displayed by that DD skipper.
Anyway, the first night attacks against Amami Oshima was made by a couple of fighter bomber units coming in piecemeal, they actually suffered high losses due to AA, despite being at night.
Then came the first (or so I though) strike by 55 Betties and 11 Frances'. They did very heavy damage for being japanese.
Allied aircraft losses
P-61C Black Widow: 7 damaged
P-61C Black Widow: 4 destroyed on ground
PBM-3D Mariner: 5 destroyed on ground

PBY-5A Catalina: 1 destroyed on ground
In addition to that, they damaged roughly 170 aircraft. Nemo must have overstacked that base something fierce.
To my great dismay, the main force did not take off however. Meaning that over 350 of my best bombers with crack pilots failed to attack!
At this point I felt cheated.
Then came the AM phase.
I had ordered several fighter units to sweep Amami Oshima and to my surprise the base was only CAPed by 5 P38Ls and 15 P51Hs. After the fifth sweep, no more CAP was in the air, leading up to this:

And with the defensive CAP gone, my kamikazes based at the island next to Amami Oshima had a field day. Unfortunately, the hit rate vs the BBs were appalling. I believe I had close to 20 Okhas aim for one of the BBs and only a single hit...

With that the fun part of the day was over. What remained were US sweeps of Tokyo, Fukuoka and Keijo, and port/airfield strikes at Fukuoka and Keijo.

I dont care about those losses though, those units were all expendable anyway. What matters is he did not hit the bases where my Ki264 Angels were based, meaning I can try again with them tomorrow.
The era of procrastination, of half-measures, of soothing and baffling expedients, of delays, is coming to a close.
