I'm playing this scenario too. I'm up to Oct,42 and just took Tassafaronga with the 1st Mar.Div. Don't have enough built up at PM to do much there yet, just shelling and bombing. Have fun.

I, too, plan on taking the entire island.

Laid the perfect cap trap over Lunga on his unescorted Betties. Results were annoying.

I had 50% LRCAP from three CVs over Lunga at only 3-4 hexes away... not a plane made it.

Am I doing something wrong on the LRCAP? I noticed none were airborne when the raid came in..
I had the alt 1k below his as well.

Oh, well. My B17s didn't do much, nor my Havocs.

Going to switch up their roles to their proper use.

I would do my turn today, but Marc sent the wrong file it looks like.

I just noticed you mentioned you're playing a Jap human opponent.

I don't want you think Port Moresby is a side show by any means... I just don't see Japan ever taking Port Moresby in this scenario once Lunga is taken on day four. They have to shift a ton of attention between both places, when all I have to do is hold my ground and attrition him around Port Moresby. I want to eventually get tactical bombers on Moresby and Mline Bay to pound that area into oblivion, and then place strategic bombers there to shutdown airfields/ports. I will then use GCanal and my CVs over east in the Solomons to do the same. He has to make a choice where to commit land/sea/air units. I've already done that because my chess pieces start on the board day one.

It's comments like this that warm the cockles of a scenario designer's heart. You are thinking in terms of the entire operational space and adapting your moves in accord with your perception of your opponent's limitations. Japan has two fronts to address, but has the central position. What to do? what to do?

The rule for this is generally 60% of the converging forces; Fredrick, Napoleon, Jackson did it with much less, but they all used "legs" as a force multiplier. In this scenario, the forces are generally in conformance to the model, with one side getting beefy, and then another. Ping-pong. But "Legs", in this scenario, are the troop transports. Folk don't walk, they have to be delivered; thus the Japanese conumdron.

I think you are doing fine. So long as you keep thinking in terms of the operational space, you will have a good game. Ciao. John

Havoc's set to ground attack east of Port Moresby.

B17s from Charters Towers set to hit Buna again. 75% Airfield attack and 25% Port attack.

Not much going on around Lunga, other then I am unloading a USN BF now for AV support, and those engineers will fix
the runway damage that is 21 now. I can still fly CAP from a lvl 2 AF so long as the dmg is under 60.. no worries there, yet.

Pulled back the Wasp TG to refuel with an AO I brought up. She was running very low on fuel. Going to pull back a group at a time.

Very little action other than subs. I need to do a better job with my ASW efforts...

Hit Buna, but forgot to recon it during the turn.. was reconning Lae that turn..going to bomb Buna into the ground,
and then focus on Lae as well. Intel only shows four fighters on Lae.. nothing at Buna but LRCAP

Havocs hit troops east of Port Moresby again. Decent results without any plane losses.

It could have been a miserable day for the sailors aboard Wasp. Marc was so pissed he missed...

Could be a big turn.

I am moving some assets around to spring a trap on the CAs that look to be coming back to Lunga to smash my troop transports and the AF.
I but the Washington in with CAs and DDs that will retire to Lunga right now to be there during the middle of the night to meet them.

I also have 4 DDs doing the same at Tulagi.. Sole reason is to chew up his OP points because it he moves through that area, he
HAS to move through Tulagi if you look carefully at the hex side detail.

He can take two routes. He knows I have mines all around that island, as he lost a CA to one.... However, if he takes B, he won't run
into my DDs, just the Washington SAG at Lunga... we'll see what happens.

My goal here (IF he is actually coming this turn) is to have his cruisers run into my DDs, and then finally my big SAG at Lunga
during the night and pitch a battle.

They SHOULD use up most, if not all, of their opp points during the night. They would then be sitting ducks the next morning for
my CVs, which I will have three in place to strike now that Wasp has refueled.

Putting a big SAG at Lunga will probably draw his bombers attention, which is why I put some LRCAP from the CVs over Lunga again.

I have men unloading their right now.

My goal is to cover my reinforcements, punch him in the nose, and then sink capital ships in the morning... freeing up the area
for more reinforcements to show up.

I did move in 24 Wildcats to Lunga finally.

Could be a fun turn.

Whoa, could be fun. My only fear is the outcome of night battles with the IJN at this stage. Could well be worth it if you catch him with CV planes, however.

I really need to ramp up my ASW efforts... against the AI, I haven't seen an enemy sub for a month and it's early 42'

That is my plan. If nothing happened during the turn, I will probably pull back all capital ships.

That way I just risk DDs.

How is the great Lone Star State? We do a lot of business into/out of there so I think about ya often when
I'm looking at a map of your nation.

For better or worse, we are in the midst of the biggest oil boom in our history. We are closing in on 3M barrels of oil per year, levels not seen since the 1970s. Crazy stuff and it's weird to live in a boom town when the nation as a whole is suffering. Towns in the oil patches of South and West Texas have no hotel rooms available and long lines (30 minutes to an hour) to buy a Coke and a burrito at the local 7-11. Wild stuff.

However, all our football teams suck, so economic prosperity is irrelevant to our collective mood. [;)]

PS - for best ASW coverage, it's my understanding that you need 6 to 8 DDs per TF.

For those who watch this, sorry for the delay. I am very busy with year end, buying new semis, interviewing new drivers,
and more Christmas celebrations my wife drags to me to.. yada yada.. God, Christmas is expensive.

Back to the important stuff.

Nothing major happened this turn that I wanted to. His CAs are still in port.. but they appear to be gearing up to
hit Lunga again.

He did bomb Lunga during the middle of the night with little damage.

A ton of sub action, and the CA Australia was hit as a result. There are a lot of subs in the operating area.

CVs didn't move at all to where I wanted, and instead put themselves in harms way. Imagine that..[8|]

Call me crazy, but I don't like Marc's CAs setting where they are. They're a big threat to my forces in the Lunga
area, and he's only getting more in the next few turns.

I haven't seen a naval strike in a few turns on any shipping around the Solomons, and I have a lot of shipping for him to attack.

To me that means he nothing on Naval Attack at this time. He has been ground bombing in the night and day turn.
I am going to take a quick chance at an opportunity to move my CVs and hit his exposed CAs.

They're in a location that doesn't have any close AF other than Rabaul. He has to leave fighters on CAP there,
and allow for escort if some are on naval strike. IMO, he doesn't have any fighters covering those CAs.

If he moves, he runs into my DDs at Lunga and the Wasp sailing to the east of Lunga.

If he stays put, he'll be hit by the Saratoga, Enterprise, and DBs from Lunga that I just moved into place.

Let's see if my gamble pays off.

Australia sent to Sydney for repairs, and her old SAG will retire and station off of the Milne Bay area. I have
ZERO naval assets in that area, and I don't want him to round the horn and hit Port Moresby from the sea.

His CVs should be arriving any time... we're about 8-10 days in from start date. Once I hit here, I'll retire to
the Duff Islands area.

Pretty quiet turn. My CVs that I moved east of Shortlands ran into thunderstorms. They didn't launch, but haven't
been spotted. I thought about doing an all out port/af strike on Rabaul, but I am 25% away from a lvl 5 AF at
Port Moresby and have over 100 AV sitting at Townsville ready to ship out. I will soon be flying B17s from there.
So, even though I would have probably been ok, I didn't think it was worth it.

I put the DBs at Lunga back on the Wasp. Saratoga and Enterprise will rendezvous with all of the other capital ships and Wasp TF.

Put one group of Wildcats on Night Cap at 9k alitidude. 1k above his last Betties.

I hope he runs into them

I have had a very intense busy week here at the office, and didn't get the turns to Marc for a couple of days.

I have all of the turns waiting to process today, but I don't I'll get to them.

I have a four hour defensive driving course I have to take since I drive a company vehicle. [8|]

We're also playing John Tiller's Campaign Series, too. It is all of the East and West Front scenarios thrown in together
with Rising Sun. It's a blast. Right now we're playing Kasserine Pass.
