I would claim there is a large difference between a black
ribbon and something political/religious/whatnot motivated.
The UEFA for instance had allowed this numerous times.
But suppose the IOC feels the Golden Arches is more on
keeping with the Olympic tradition than allowing someone
to show grief and support... [:'(]

Not commenting on this case as I know nothing about it - but I can understand the IOC not wanting any unofficial symbols, displays, badges and whatnot. Remember 1968 [:(]
I do not remember 1968 so I need to be enlightened. Or maybe I should look it up?
warspite1
No I shouldn't have mentioned it - it may be taken the wrong way. Suffice to say, the Olympic medal ceremony would be spoilt if it was a free for all to do whatever they wanted regardless of the cause.
Ah. Now I remember what you meant. I thought it was something else completely.

But if they allow that then it is difficult to stop people from showing grief and support for questionable characters.
I think they should allow a black ribbon but that it must be preapproved.

Or only allow for team members and family, but I see your point.

Anyone else see the racy pictures of scantily clad Russian female Olympians the other day?

Canada! Texas! Canada! Tex, uh Canada! I don't watch the Olympics much anymore because of the lousy tv coverage here in the US. I would prefer to have a live feed that let me pick events, etc. All they want to show is the current American "name" athlete. I want to see the games, not just the media darlings.

The moguls at Sochi have been a problem for quite a few Olympic skiers, and now we know why: The Empire has gotten involved. Seems Russian security may be a little overzealous.

A inept performance in the Winter Olympics used to be authentically Australian but in recent games there has been a disturbing trend towards actual professionalism and genuinely earned medals.
This games had seen a return to traditional values, with plenty of our athletes not only losing, choking and generally spakking out but actually falling over on a regular basis. The Australian broadcaster, who as usual has ridiculously pumped up any remote medal chance, was really starting to freak out at the prospect of a bare cupboard. Fortunately for them we won a silver last night.
Comedians Roy & HG, who host a refreshingly satirical late night Olympics show on said broadcaster, were really starting to wind up on the lack of success, but they'll have to go back to bagging Sochi, Russia, Putin, the secret police and basically everybody else. If you're unfamiliar with their work, they're very hard to explain, very Australian and very funny. Their irreverent commentary of Olympic events is legendary here and they specialise in trivialising the serious and making the trivial serious.
Cheers, Neilster

I very much enjoyed "The Games", a comedy series that came out about the time of the Sydney olympics. Wish I could find it on American television again, as it was very well written and acted.

Eh? I can watch any event live online that I care to through my cable / internet providers. It's not just about prime time TV anymore, mate.

Yeah. "The Games" was good. I have a friend who knew about SOCOG (the Sydney 2000 organising committee) and he said that was basically a documentary. I liked the long boozy lunch in the really expensive restaurant where they couldn't work out how they could possibly save any money [;)]

Apparently The Netherlands spends twice as much on their speed-skating as we spend on our whole Winter Olympics team. It shows too. They're very good.
