I never understood the point of spamming. Trolling for kicks I guess. I can't see what amusement it gives them. All that stuff will just be gone soon anyways.
Spambots are a wholly automated process, no human intervention required. There's no "amusement" involved. It's entirely impersonal.
There are many abandoned, poorly maintained fora etc. across the wide, wide Web. A spambot hits such a website, and does a message dump. It may go unnoticed for days, even "forever".
I have seen this all myself. I run several webservers. (Also a forum, which is closed to new members, and guest posting. Unless specifically requested via e-mail. Because of the spamming problem.) From the server logs, I can see where spambots visit my websites
hourly, by the hundreds.

Why is everyone complaining about spam? I love spam. I had spam sandwiches for dinner last night, thin sliced and pan fried. I don't understand the hate.

WOW. It was 109 pages of spam before he was stopped. Our old 'first page' is now page 110. [:(]

3-4 seconds per posting LOL...wow. You would think they would have some hard limit for number of posts per minute.
They have some sort of limit now and I suspect that I will get annoyed with that fast. [:(]
Edit: Or maybe not. Time will tell. [:D]

Been too so many forums, but, it seems Matrix Games seems to excel at being spammed.
Come on guys, it isn't rocket science, stop telling us about what you can't do.
We know that capchas or whatever they are called have limitations. Stop expecting them to do the work though. Ever thought of using a different bloody method?
How about new accounts can only post once in an hour or a full day. Come on, I don't think there are that many people that desperate to post 20 posts in 20 minutes around here. Leave the limitations until the account is either 100 posts in or 1 month of active. Again, I fail to see the real harm. If I was told I could only post once today, my life would go on.
Every time the forum ends up looking like it is run by clueless amateurs, it reflects that to all the observers. This is a company forum of a company that wants to be taken seriously (I would assume). That I have seen Matrix Games beaten up by spammers for as long as I have seen, leads me to think the people in charge of this forum haven't the foggiest idea of how to properly secure a bloody forum.
Which tends to only make the company look bad.
For god's sake, hire someone that actually DOES know something about running a proper professional web site.
No, the people currently in charge don't.
If this was my forum, I'd be telling the person responsible for the daily running of the forum they either figured it out, or I was hiring someone that knew what they were doing.
Harsh sounding perhaps, but sometimes that's what you need to hear.

I don't know. On the flip side the problem has been solved and we're mostly back to normal. Just a temporary annoyance. Life goes on, as you point out.

Blimey...by the hundreds per hour? Guess I already "knew" that but still... quite disturbing really. Problem is that once you have a pc/server sending spam doesn't cost you a dime. I once read somewhere some time ago that half the bandwith used is used up by spammers. Curse them.

This guy from the mid east spammed my site through matrix with 3500 emails. Lucky I use outlook so wrote a rule to get rid of them, but still an issue just to take the time. Matrix would be nice to figured how to stop this spammer.

Oh, I agree with that. How does it feel to be able to post faster than a spam-bot?

Speaking of Terminus, where has he been lately... [:D]
EDIT: I'm just kidding, I actually like Terminus. He and I were friends from the WITP forum. [:)]
