Well sadly I have to report, Harpoon II Admirals edition will not play nice with XP. They don't wish to be friends.
I tried all the tricks I know a least.
Cd would not auto run, minor hassle normally.
Compatibility feature meant doowah on auto run.
As well, it failed on every install permutation tried. Or rather the game seems to install, but refuses to run after it installs.
It does not generate any "presence" on install though ie you have to just delete the folder.
I would have to say, Harpoon does not appear to have a future with an XP user.
I have never actually played the game though. I only have it by virtue of it being a companion game in a package for another wargame (I don't think it runs either on XP).
It was one of those damned near free bargain bin purchases though. I am not suffering a great loss here in my opinion.

no luck here either...tried each different combination I think.
screen flashes black for a second and then back to the desktop.
CD huh?, mine's on 3-1/4" floppies.
Oh well, still have that 95 machine, it isn't going anywhere.
On a $ per hour scale I have got more than my moneys worth out of Harpoon2, heh copyright on the disk says 1994, wow, eight, nearly nine years, I have westpac, the big juicy manual and strategy guide all in the original box.
probably end up on e-bay someday I guess. (not yet though)

Recently they invented XP as well heheh.
Oh it might not be the most brilliant thing Big Bill has made, but at least he finally made it so Windows didn't dump all your efforts in the trash with a blue screeno death at random.
Now XP won't run each and every archaic game out there (wargames included). But at least it will run itself constantly and reliably.
Now considering that my life doesn't revolve around playing a specific wargame, but it sure is dependent on my computer fnctioning constantly and reliably, I will pick an OS I can rely on, over a lame useless one that might still play a few specific wargames.

i´m with 98. why buying XP or any other M$ stuff, if all things i need function with 98 ??
if you want M$ or bill gates to get even more money and power: go ahead buy all their new stuff.
as long as all progs i need run on 98 i keep it. very simple.

I just went from 95 to XP,talk about a leap.It has its good points and bad points, though i do like the fact that certain functions you can run in classic mode which makes the transition a little bit easier. So far i'm only having problems with one game.

Frank to give it a suitable analogy.
Win 98 is a hovel, and it matters not if some dingy furniture feels comfortable in that hovel.
XP might not a palace, but it sure is a nice home. And if some of my dingy furniture won't fit in it, then its time to seek out new furniture that does.
I recently had one beloved piece of furniture refinished eh.
Might have had to pay a few bucks to get Operational Art of War Volume 1 refinished by purchasing Century of Warfare, but it was a good idea. And hey, the game looks nicer anyway.
But saying 98 isn't a hovel, just because the furniture fits in it, is a pointless defense of a hovel.
And 98 is a hovel. I know, because I have lived in that hovel.
The roof leaks, the wiring is bad, the foundation is cracked, I can go on.
Sure XP has some problems in interior design, but at least the roof doesn't leak and the wiring is good and the foundation is secure.

the only game I have been unable to get working on either win2k or XP (that I would actually miss) has been harpoon2. everything else I have either found a patch for, or just dumped for lack of interest in the effort required.
I have very few problems with either one crashing. Explorer gets iffy after a week or two on win2k I think, I start to get shut downs. But that may be me installing and uninstalling demos and stuff too... who knows. It hasn't happenned often enough for me to worrry about
I couldn't say that about 3.1-95-98

One man's hovel is another man's mansion.

Les, you're beating this dead horse to a pulp. Based on your analogy, I guess it just depends on how good a home improvement contractor you are. No leaks, no bad wiring and a solid foundation with my win98se. Name one game that you can run on XP that I can't on win98se.

wow interesting topic...there is a program called vmware at
www.vmware.com takes a little bit of a stout computer but its a pc emulator...can run multiple OS's at the same time... at work I use it to answer questions about everything from DOS to win3.1,9x,2000,xp...you name it... saves on hardware costs..
at home I use it to play games in win98 running inside my nice stable Linux box.... doesn't that sound like heracy... running windows inside linux.... It has a nice suspend feature that is convienient if I need a break in the middle of a game.

I'VE JUST HEARD IT AGAIN. MICRCOSCAM'S PURPOSE FOR CREATING XP IS TO USE IT AS SPYWARE TO SNIFF OUT UNCOPYWRITED OR "ILLEGAL" PROGRAMS, AS A BOT TO ALTER REGISTRY FILES THAT ARE CONFIGURED BY HACKS AND MOST DIABOLICAL OF ALL, TO ACQUIRE COPYWRITE OVER TCPIP AND CONVERT IT TO MS-PIP AND SUBSEQUENTLY CHARGE EVERYONE ON THE PLANET TO ACCESS THE INTERNET WHEN USING PROGRAMS THAT REQUIRE TCPIP!!!! THIS CASE TO ACQUIRE THE COPYWRITE IS BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT RIGHT NOW. THIS MONOPOLISTIC STRATEGY I FEAR IS INHERENT TO MICROSOFTS PHILOSOPHY OF BUSINESS AND AS A CHRISTIAN SLAAKNARCHIST I HEARBY OFFICIALLY CONDEMN THIS "WAR-CRIMINAL" AS A PAWN OF THE DEVIL, ALONG WITH ALL THE OTHER PARASITICAL INSTITUIONS IN THE WORLD SUCH AS INSURANCE COMPANIES, OPEC, PROPERTY AND INCOME TAX, PATENT LAW, COMMUNISM, FASCISM, COCAINE AND HEROIN CARTELS, FEMINISTS, DEIISM, CALIFORNIA FAMILY COURTS, MY EX-WIFE AND ALL THE OTHER MINIONS OF ANTI-SLAAK DEMONS RUNNING AMOK THROUGHOUT THE UNIVERSE!!!! THIS MEANS WAR!!!!
SLAAKATTAK
LONG LIVE LINUX!! DEATH TO COPYWRITE AND PATENT LAW!!! CONVERT TO SLAAKNARCHISM!!!

I'm posting this from the perspective of a person who plays wargames and happens to work in the computer world
XP and Win2k are actually at the same level
XP is being marketed for home users and small business networks.
Win2k is designed with the power user and larger networks in mind (If you are going to get 2k get the proffesional edition)
Linux will never be user friendly for games, it is too popular for running servers
Win98se blows compared to Win2k or XP, both XP and Win2K are more stable and easier to work on, Only draw back is some games will not work. Oh well.
BTW, TOAW:ACOW will run on Win2k and XP, you need to download a pair of the hacked exe's that have the safedisc copyprotection stripped off. (
www.tdg.nu has them)

				I must protest.
Now Satan has done some very bad things over the centuries, but to imply he has anything to do with the nasty Bill Gates is just plain mean.
People should stop accusing Satan of hanging out with Bill, it really isn't the sort of thing your mother would ever approve of either.
If you can't say anything nice about someone don't say anything at all so I am told.
