Ok, how about the first game you played vs a human on the computer? ? With me it was Atomic Games/Avalon Hill's "Operation Crusader"-a very good game for it's time. It was the first computer game that made me believe that we were heading into a new renaissance for war gaming. I remember that you could not just attach a file to your email but had to use uudecode on the file before you could send it. Still, when I got my opponents first turn over the net- it was "pig in sh*t" time for me.

eastern front:
i was very young and i remember i was the only one from all my family and friends that liked/ tried to understand that game
i also remember asking my father, what is a panzer?? i think i was not even 10 years old then

Me too. Jeepers that teletypes machine was loud. I remember the computer office had to get a school pass book so I could stay late at school and catch the late bus home! Because I was the first kid to use it!

I was clearing out some drawers today and found some old invoices from Oct 1987.
$499 for an Amiga 1010 external floppy drive and $58.00 for a box (10) of Verbatim 3.5" DD floppy disks. What the hell were we thinking!! When I was an apprentice back then that was more than two weeks wages!!!! [:(]

My first computer from 1987 was an 80286 with two 5.25 inch floppies, a 20MB hard drive, monochrome video, 512KB of RAM. It cost $2000 in parts and I had to put it together. I spent over an hour on the phone with Seagate trying to get the hard drive formatted.

Many old games I never seen or heard, too bad I missed them. Wasn't sure if they are worth it and I do remember how much they usually cost and it is crazy.

My first comp was an Amstrad CPC464 - and first game I bought was 'Graf Spee'

Then 3-4 weeks later I returned to school and one of my friends told me he got 2 games - Arheim and Desert Rats... I went mad...
And then I saw 'kampfgruppe' - traded my cpc464 and bought the game - then bought a c64 with disk to play it.
It seems I played most of the games mentioned here...makes me realized how old I am.

-Hey I almost left my family for this game - we hot seat'ed full scenario - I remember chewing my nails as I waited Tarrrrrrrrrr sound to finish see what's left of my 1 RTR after its attack on AT bn 33....

NORTH ATLANTIC 1986 on an APPLE ][ Plus comes to mind. Thing was, if you were doing well as NATO and shot down all the normal planes it triggered auto reinforcements - and those included BACKFIRES in the reinforcements!
Yes -- a very frustrating game. Among other things, you had to have precisely the right garrison in Scapa Flow: a single company less and you would lose victory points, a single company more and you would drain extra supplies, forcing you to sacrifice ships to re-supply it. And the periodic reinforcements would give you extra companies, whether you wanted them or not!
NORTH ATLANTIC '86 my second computer simulation; GUADALCANAL CAMPAIGN was the first. I basically bought my first computer to play it.

LOL - Yes I had plenty of "through the night" sessions. It was so new, so exciting and the units were so cool!

An air traffic sim (I long since forgot its name) on a TRS-80 Model 1. This was circa 1981.

Yes me too. Lucas Film's "Aces if the Pacific" was the first on a PC; plus "Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe" and "Battle of Britain". My very first computer simulation was "Reach for the Stars" on an Apple IIc (IIRC).
In 1985 or so, I was stationed in Denver as a Marine instructor. One Friday evening, I visited my closest friend George Meyer, an avid board game enthusiast. He showed me "Aces of the Pacific" on his 286. I had an immediate attack of Computer Game "I must have it" Lust; and upon returning home (just after midnight) woke up my ever suffering wife and informed her that we would be shopping later that day.
Have never looked back.
By the way, Carrier Strike is still an excellent game...

Just after the Cold War ended a lot of people at Boeing on the military side got laid off, but Boeing started the 777 program and our group started hiring like mad. We went from around 150 people to over 1500 in about 2 years. My new lead was obsessed with Battle of Britain on his Amiga. I got the PC version and played it for a while, but I never got into it like he did.
I realize now one of the things that put me off being on my computer for long hours at a time was the noise. The hard drive on the thing sounded like an idling diesel truck. It really got on my nerves. These days I try to make my computers as quiet as possible.
