Before I go downloading stuff can someone from Lordz/Matrix please tell me how widespread this issue with the game is? Is it a problem generally or not?

they can help you more than i can, but would need something from you in return, a save, a log, a Directx Dialog file etc

It's not widespread otherwise we would be flooded by helpdesk tickets.
We have four or five CTGW open tickets and they are related with multiplayer and saved games issues.
I suggest you to open a helpdesk ticket or just contact us at support[at]slitherine.co.uk.
Like zak mentioned, we will need to begin with, your ctgw.log and the DxDiag report files.
We surely would like to help you in getting the game running.
