Dec41? Yeah, gonna be lousy.

You're doing what will work once you have quality people in place.

Ships/TF:
Your ship crews are likely in their 50's at best.
Hard to find commanders above 60 and you will be needing those in other roles.
The ships you have now either:
have 4xDC and are slower than the subs or
have 2xDC and are about the same speed as the subs
As these skills and EXP's approach the 70's, things will really start to happen.
You need many ASW TF's of 3xSC working the same area.

Planes:
Ditto: hard to find enough pilots and commanders with EXP/skills at +70.
Particularly important at night.
As skills/EXP increase you will have a lot more sightings.

I generally don't start having serious success with my ASW until Mar/Apr 42. However, they are effective from the get-go as they chase the allied subs around and keep them from targetting ... that's enough initially.

My ASW kill zones are just that ... kill zones. EX: Hokkaido/Honshu
4x24 groups of Jakes set to NavSearch; 2xday, 2xnight. 2x Ominato, 2xHakodate
6x3SC ASW TF. patrol Ominato/Hakodate corridor, 3xTF on each side.
Intent is that a discovered sub will be hit by at least 2 TF, hopefully 3 before it can leave the area. hit it and then kill it is my motto.

The allies know where my cargo ships have to transit. I simply make them total death zones. Until the Deathstar arrives, there's little they can do about it ...

So, yeah, you;'re basically dioing everything fine, you just need patience for results. [:D]

Movie 28 DEC 41

The invasion of Petropavlovsk starts. Sending in my TF with 4BB to help out with the CDs and was the right call but maybe I shoulda used more BBs… DD that were also in the TF got spanked pretty hard. At least none of the merchies loaded with troops took major damage.

Also in Russia, near Shilka, we've got a heck of an aerial battle going on for protecting the foot-sacks and trying to maintain air superiority. Bruce has more bases to fly out of so he's able to throw more AC into the party.

I had spotted another small TF of ships that was fleeing from the PI. They were clear up near Johnston Isle. I got a SCTF into them with a CA, 2CL, and 5DD and they sunk the two xAKL and their PC escort. Overkill? Yup

I lost a DMS to an allied sub at Hong Kong…

Spotlight Petropavlovsk

I pulled 4 DD from the invasion TF and have them fleeing to Paramushiro-Jima's port to try and stave off that sinking feeling…

I pulled my BB from my carrier TF and they'll be making a bombardment next turn.

DB from Kaga-2 will go after the port. I'm hoping they'll help suppress the CD unit.

TF33 has a pair of air support units and I've moved that closer to the base. They'll unload after the divisions in the first wave are unloaded.

So just a note on this AAR. Bruce does a *lot* of travel. And recently I've been doing the same. This AAR will get slow in spots and it's my second game. Bruce and I went into this with the understanding that it'd be a slower game.

Dust-dust-dust, cough, cough, cough. Ugh! We just broke January in this game. It looks like Bruce got a laptop working so I might-could get a few more turns in. I'm shooting for 4-5 turns per week as ideal for myself.

So where am I at in January? I sent off the turn early this morn for January 2nd. I've captured Petropavlovsk but I paid heavily in merchant shipping. The CDs are pretty tough in this game.

In the northern section of the Manchukuo/Russian boarder, I've blocked the rail way and see that Bruce is running lots of ground units to try and drive me out. And i'm driving more units up - lol. The air war up ther has been somewhat in his favor as I've been forced to use mostly Oscars. The -Id model did hold up well against his fighter sweeps but it was really a numbers game. When he throws up two fighters for every one of mine and does it in multiple waves, I just haven't had the air frames to keep up. Bruce did catch me with my pants down once over Hailar and got in a good bombing run on my airfields. I counter the next turn with a huge fighter CAP while he tried a rinse-and-repeat of the previous turn's bombing run. I ate his lunch. It's all really a numbers game. When I can throw 2:1 or better at Bruce, his forces take the short end of the stick, When I'm on the receiving end it my turn in the grinder.

It looks like Bruce pulled back his P-50 fighters that were giving me grief in the PI but I'm already in the process of working the back-door into the DEI.

Georgetown just fell and Moulmien in Burma should fall next turn. Everything is pushing down and I'm rebuilding divisions that start the game broken down. I keep thinking I should be so much further ahead in this game but like I noted - it's only January.

My air losses have been really obnoxious. I've ramped up my fighter production - I'm averaging 7 zero a turn in production but it's woefully short of my losses. And the Oscar-Id is now in production with centre-line 20mm guns so I've increased production there too. Also, while I'll get a lot of new fighter groups on the board over the coming days, they'll all arrive with only 1 or two AC in the group. It'll be up to me to fill them out. The truth is, right now I'm thinking that I need a production rate of about 400 Zero per month and maybe 500 Oscar-Id just to cover losses and fill out those empty air groups. I'll note that the allies get many-many air groups over the next 90 days too - and they are fully filled out...

My invasions will need heavy fighter support. And at those locations where they have those butt-kicking CD units - I'll have to go around them or have 3-4 BB-heavy TFs that do nothing but bombardment. And putting those FP air groups on night-time Recon to serve as spotters really makes a difference if the dice-gods are friendly.

Also - this will now be my primary game and as I noted above, I'm looking to keep very a slow pace. The game I had going with Michael (ny59giants) needed to go through another restart and it was an excellent opportunity to start weening myself from this game. I've noticed that my chair has conformed to my butt... If you get the opportunity to play a game with Michael I highly recommend it. He's been a gran opponent and I consider him a good friend.

I'll post some numbers and such from Tracker later (it's nice and sunny so I want to go play - lol).

So when flying Naval Search with the Glen - does it make more sense to fly night missions rather than day missions for successful attacks? I'm thinking if I fly day missions it helps me track enemy TFs but if I fly night missions, does it improve my attacks?

I've never tried b4 and am doing so now for a few of my subs. But if anyone has real in-game-experience I'd be appreciative if you shared. <grin>.

So you can kinda see the losses have been crazy... And this w/o doing many sweeps. Most of the time my fighters have been on CAP\LRCAP\Escort - and I'd say the majority of the losses were from Escort duties.

So for the allied ground losses - most of those were from PH and early attacks of allied bases on T1. If you subtract the ground losses from the allied total losses to date, that'd be about 725 VS my 1545. And this is Jan 1 - so the war is only 3 weeks old.

There's no way a pilot program is gunna work in this kind of a mod - lol.

We get a lot of new air groups in 90 days. For the allies, those air groups are all filled out. For Japan, I need to fill them from production... This is definitely a challenge. My experience so far is that Bruce will be able to maintain overall air superiority in any theatre until mid to late 42. He'll have better air frames coming on line but if my production can hold out I should be able to take back air superiority through sheer numbers...

Operation Left Cross has cut the rail lines and Bruce is focused up here with his ground troops. He has something on the order of 75 to 100 units up here right now, 50 of which are identified in these two hexes.

There's a lotta gold up here in Russia in this mod. Since it's in my backyard and cuts my supply routes to something small and probably much easier to protect, it seems a no-brainer for me not to go for this first.

China
Near Kwangchowen, Bruce continues to snipe @ my ground units. My movement is slower going in combat mode but his bombers really do little damage to my units.
I'm taking a page from Bruce and night-bombing Kwangchowen. I flew something like 15 missions over Kwangchowen. The damage is minimal for each strike but the strikes should add up rather quickly. For at least the 7th of January, he had no fighter CAP for night attacks.

Bruce is also interested in Ichang for some reason, and flys sweeps with his flying Tigers and pounds my ground units with bombers. Again - the bombers do little damage to my troops due to my fort level.


PI
Bruce has been doing night attacks at Aparri, in the PI. I have Oscars flying night-CAP and they at least do a pretty good job of messing up the aim of his 4E bombers.

Russia
It sucks to go up against MiGs. Bruce has used them for sweeps and escort over Mutankiang. I'm not contesting the sweeps he does over my ground units near Shilka but I am over Mutankiang. CAPing my base means must of my pilots live to fly another day - even if they do wind up having to bail every now and then.
I did give him a bloody nose over Mutankiang on the 7th. I over-loaded my fighters over that base with about 70 zeroes flying LRCAP. I'm still smiling over that one.

So near Shilka, Bruce has the hexes blocked with troops. I'm pushing units to remove his block. I have a division kind of separated from the rest of my large stack that is on its last legs. When supplies get low-low the ability to defend drops into the toilet. I thought about flying transports with supplies but those sweeps Bruce does…

I did a deliberate attack @ Tamsag with the 6th & 7th Mongolian Cav Divisions. I got 1:2 odds and he took heavy casualties in spite of his forts being at level 3, which means his troops probably were deep in the red for supplies.

I'm starting to push troops across from Mutenkiang in something I call Operation Uppercut. I'm tossing an uppercut at Russia from down low around the knees since so many of his troops are up near Shilka. Should be fun to watch.

So I've shared a bit about my air losses over the war so far. These are the reinforcements that Bruce gets over the first 90 days of the war. It's why I've been really husbanding my air units and trying to really limit my losses until I can get my production ramped up...

Hey - I'm looking for tips from ya'll on Japanese ASW tactics.

I seem to get opponents that like to slam an area of the map with 5-10 subs and go after my merchies.

So I try to counter by:

Naval Search both night and Day. 6k altitude.

I'll use 1-2 Medium Bomber Air Groups flying Naval Attack @ 6k. I'll also use a longer-ranged MB AG (like a Betty or Nell) for ASW since ASW range is halfed.

Several ASW TFs of 2-3 ships patrolling. DDs PBs... I try to keep my TFs with the same type of ship. I try to go with Naval and Aggressive skill sets when I'm selecting leaders for ASW TFs.

My Merchie TFs tend to be 5-10 merchies and 2-3 PB. This doesn't seem to protect well... And I have to convert a lot of shipping to PBs to achieve this.

Anyways - if you have tips or observations on how to beat the snot outta allied subs I'd really appreciate if you'd share a post [:)]

Your air seems good if your density is good. NavSearch or ASW at 2K, day/night full coverage, overlapping from both sides when I can. EX: Ominato AND Hokkaido. Fusan AND Fukuoka. Get the DL on the subs and keep it high. The the hunter groups 3xDD or 3xE. Convoys with SC's. Med Bombers can be used as well, but its first and foremost all about getting DL and then maintaining it.

PB's for me are just bait and/or torp soaks at best. I actually don't waste time with them. SC/E are what really work.

So when flying Naval Search with the Glen - does it make more sense to fly night missions rather than day missions for successful attacks? I'm thinking if I fly day missions it helps me track enemy TFs but if I fly night missions, does it improve my attacks?

I've never tried b4 and am doing so now for a few of my subs. But if anyone has real in-game-experience I'd be appreciative if you shared. <grin>.

I use glens on recon, rarely NavSearch. One plane arcs are small percentage unless within 4 hexes, then mission doesn't matter as long as they fly.

End of January Report

Air Assets:
My fighter production is primarily the A6M2 Zero and the Oscar-Id. I produced a tad over 450 fighters with 310 of them the Zero. Earlier I noted that Bruce will receive another 1,800 F/FB air frames (95 FGs) over the first 90 days of war and that he started out with a little over 4,400 fighters at the start while I started out with a bit over 2200 fighters (many of mine being Nates and Claudes…). Since the start of the war I've produced over 700 fighters, and while I've received many new AG of fighters, they are partially filled air groups consisting of Nates and Claudes. To date I've lost over a thousand fighters - 636 of which are Zeros.

In February I should produce almost double the fighters. Once I can get some semblance of parity in the air game, I expect my ground game will pick up dramatically in Russia and China.

Naval Assets:
My Navy is in pretty fair shape as I haven't done much to push deeper into the Pacific. Part of that reason is that, while my carriers an air groups are in good shape, I can't really afford heavy losses to my fighter groups. Oh - I've gotten in a lick or two over the last few months but mostly it's sub VS ASW conflict that's taking place. Bruce has a lot of subs…

Ground Assets:
In Russia my Northern arm has been effectively countered. Part of the challenge for me has been his air superiority and my inability to counter what have been heavy ground attacks from waves of bombers.
My lower arm is driving on Voroshilov and so far I've been able to do a better job of air support. I think what I've done is bleed his Russian air assets down and, with the two prongs, I'm forcing Bruce to split his air assets. I shudder to think what would have happened if Bruce was able to marshal all of his Russian air assets on a single front…

In China I think I've finally got the hand on Kwangchowan and hope to have the base in hand within the next 10 days or so. I had slowly massed enough fighters and bombers to punch through his air CAP and damage the airfield enough to reduce his ability to fly CAP. Right now my mouse-over shows 99% damage to his AF and I'm keeping it that way. Bruce was able to build his fort level up to three but I'm whittling that down with ground attacks.

Malaya and Burma are a slow slog as I don't have enough aircraft to do more than defend my airfields in those regions. That means his bombers are practicing on my ground units… <wry grin>.

For now, I think I see the light at the end of the tunnel. It is a train but I'm doing enough damage to the rails that I think I'll survive the experience and come through the other side with a bigger stick to whack back with. I should get in a good push before Bruce sees better air frames. He still has a goodly number of his P-50s but I think they are mostly being held in preparation for my future assault in the DEI.

Good to see this AAR is still open for business.

Again I put most of my fighters that come fresh off the assembly lines and move them to the Russian Theatre. I've been sweeping/escorting/bombing pretty heavily around the southern bases near Vladivostok for quite a few turns now.

The Yamato took 27 SYS damage during the last bombardment of Vladivostok. I'm sending it to repair docks in Japan.

I'm having problems with my air groups in Bangkok having opportunities to replace aircraft in spite of the fact that I have 18,000 tons of supplies @ the base. I've set a CS:TF to run from Tokyo to Bangkok w/33,075 tons of supplies. It will return with resources. Bangkok is attached to Southern Army, I have the 3rd Air Div. Air HQ @ Bangkok and it too is attached to the SA. And all of my fighter groups @ Bangkok are attached to the 4rd Air Div. Anything else I can do to try and get air groups to increase their opportunities to get replacements?

I'm having problems with my air groups in Bangkok having opportunities to replace aircraft in spite of the fact that I have 18,000 tons of supplies @ the base. I've set a CS:TF to run from Tokyo to Bangkok w/33,075 tons of supplies. It will return with resources. Bangkok is attached to Southern Army, I have the 3rd Air Div. Air HQ @ Bangkok and it too is attached to the SA. And all of my fighter groups @ Bangkok are attached to the 4rd Air Div. Anything else I can do to try and get air groups to increase their opportunities to get replacements?

You need 20k in supply and/or within transfer range of a base that has over 20k. You need to request 3x (actual 9k) or 4x (12k actual) on left side of base supply screen. Same thing you do in Japan to request enough at a base to enable repairs to occur. Right now its going to Southern Army or some other base with larger AF/port.

OT - Just hit 7 Dec 42 vs Gen Patton in less than 170 days.
