It's odd that those Spits in the artwork are unarmed.

Most of the time guns had tape over the ends of the barrels to improve aerodynamics and keep the barrels as clean as possible. When the guns were fired, the tape was blown open. Many times the ground crews would look to see if their plane was coming back with the tape blown open to indicate their pilot was in a fight.

The Americans used something akin to masking tape and it only covered the end up the barrel, so it isn't really very visible in pictures. Same thing with British cannons. But for the .303s the British put large squares of red tape over the entire area where the gun met the edge of the wing. In that picture you can see 8 red squares on the leading edges of the wings where the guns were. The Hurricane with 8X .303s had the guns together in blocks of 4 per wing and the tape usually looked continuous across the area where the guns were. The Spitfire had the guns distributed where ever they could squeeze them in.

That's why I love these threads. There is so much that one forgets - or never hears - that one is reacquainted with/introduced to. Personally I have picked up so much good music from these type of threads - including this next track that I would never have heard ordinarily because I would never watch the POS that it comes from.

When I watched We Were Soldiers I became hooked at once by the lament Sgt MacKenzie by Joseph Kilna MacKenzie that were used a couple of times in the movie.

Curiously enough I tend to get something in my eye when I listen to it. Especially the original version.

And the first of the three to finish off my war film faves.

A recent addition its true (and normally wouldn't be added as I am a firm believer in the 'test of time' rule. But I haven't been able to stop playing this since the film came out so....

I love the throbbing aircraft and boat engine sounds, the clock ticking, I love the urgency and the drama, the steady, almost metronomic increase in intensity of the piece - as an accompaniment to that scene, this is just a work of art.

Hadfields and McCoys - PBS (USA Public Broadcasting) mini series with Kevin Costner / Bill Paxton. circa 2012

For those only vaguely familiar - immediate post US Civil War period and an Epic struggle of two families.

The Music score won an award if I recall correctly.

The music has roots in early North American 'settler music' in turn influenced by reels, jigs, and popular music from the British Isles of its day.

Perhaps of limited appeal.

The scene its from is tragic - sad does not even begin to cover it - and then the music starts and its bottom lip a quivering time.

And finally - well there can only be one to finish off with can't there?

This piece of music was what the violin was invented for. There simply are no words to adequately describe this piece - no words that could possibly convey its sheer spell-binding beauty. When those strings are played to within an inch of their lives, its a truly religious experience. Incredible.

Many movies come to mind with either good or great scores, and several have already been noted here. Two of my favorites: Cross of Iron and Tobruk. In Tobruk's case (I first saw it as a teenager) I just couldn't get that theme music out of my skull for quite some time. And though not a film, but a TV series - Rat Patrol is my favorite.
