I spent my first seven years in Pittsburgh. Naturally I loved all the snow we got there. That was followed by 6 years in central Illinois. Somewhat disappointed. Then til now St. Louis. Very disappointed, some years no measurable snow at all. But it is getting worse, global warming is turning St. Louis into a Southern city. The official planting zone maps have changed to where Missouri is where Arkansas used to be. That means the date you first dare to plant and the date you better have harvested by and in some cases, the species of plants you can successfully grow have changed.

There's an addendum to that. I used to grow a lot of okra. Now as you know that is very popular in Louisiana and Mississippi and I had no difficulty. The trick with okra is picking it before it ripens, similar to picking green bell peppers before they ripen (and turn red or yellow) and to jalapenos which should be picked while they are green and unripe; they get milder when they turn red, and less crunchy. The last year I grew okra there was no good time to harvest, the pods were like wood and inedible even when unripe. I don't happen to know how it went south of me, maybe they had more humidity and that made a difference?

Okra and Jalepenos are like veal and lamb, you cannot wait for it to ripen.

Ah, gorns don't seem to know everything about Earth flora, I see.

Green bell peppers remain green - they don't turn red or yellow (at least not completely). Red and yellow (and orange and purple) bell peppers, however, will change colors and you shouldn't pick them until they do as you are likely growing them for their sweeter flavor in the first place.

Jalapenos take a very long time to turn red - they stay green for quite a while.

We grow okra in Maryland. It grows very fast here. We had so many from just 4 plants last year that we pickled about a gallon's worth. It took a while to learn that they should be picked at 4 inches or so, which apparently happens in less than a week for us.

BTW it's hard to see the minus signs on those temps on your map Apollo.

The temperature record in Germany was apparently at Funtensee (Funten Lake), a small lake in the Bavarian Alps, where it went down to -41 deg Celsius. Outside of the Alps, there was a place near the German-Czech border where they had -27 degrees. And the folks on the Baltic coast had -20 as well as "lake effect" snowfalls. At least, this time, no overland high-tension line collapsed due to ice accretion (this happened a few years ago, on a length of some 20 kilometers).
