No they are not re-making it - its a new series about a later period in the war.

Maybe it will be realistic, but I doubt that they will be put through the rigors endured by the cast of the first. It may have a "off the shelf" feel.
The book Iron Coffins - Herbert Werner, would have have been a good script provider.

Point is that at the time it was shoot, German submariners were still well around, and the actors and producers actually being their sons or the sons generation of Germans of the war...with all the human and soul burden, so deep and present in Germany after the war. That's why that movie was so special and accurate. The production went really out of their way to reproduce everything in the most accurate way, they, as well as the cast, probably felt a moral obligation to themselves and the world to exactly reproduce the inheritance they've been relinquished by their fathers as it was, , not even Spielberg could have done better, even if he wanted to in this .
