How can the following movies not have been mentioned thus far ….

In Harms Way
Battle of the Bulge

The Longest Day and Glory were mentioned on some people's fave lists. Battle of the Bulge was panned for the final fuel barrel rolling scene.
I thought of In Harms Way, but the naval battle scenes were clunkily done - obvious models with unrealistic shell splashes and explosions. Sink the Bismarck did a much better job with models and effects.

Zulu was one of the first movies where Michael Caine got some serious attention. This bit isn't about that, but it's great fun to watch.

Sink the Bismark was on my list and yes it had better special effects but that is more of a budget issue …..

Battle of the Budge should be on the list for the musical scores alone …..

Battle of the Bulge was about halfway between Kelly's Heroes and some respectable movie. Sorry. I know, I have to do something about these negative vibes.

Just sayin'. Here's some Battle of the Bulge music. The Sound of Music can be described as a war film and it has better music. The Battle of Britain has way better music. The Bridge over the River Kwai has way better music. The flipping Great Escape has way better music. In case you don't remember, and that would be all too easy, here's some Battle of the Bulge music.

I prefer the German All's Quiet on the Western Front to the American one with John Boy.

Audie Murphy had at least one flashback/PTSD episode while making To Hell and Back and testified before Congress about what we now call PTSD. Sergeant York never made any money from his heroics other than what he received from a grateful state and nation.

Another great movie about war is The Best Years of Our Lives starring the lovely Myrna Loy.

I had forgotten there was a remake (a made for TV remake, at that). But the Lew Ayres original was American.

And it's my error, it's not All's Quiet, it is All Quiet.

I repeated the error when I copied what you wrote, my fault for trusting a Gorn from the state of Misery.

I always thought of it as a German movie, as I saw the silent version with subtitles. The book is German and is one of the first to be burned in 1933.

So - I hate to admit it but never read the book (Thin Red line). wasn't there a TV series based on it or am I just aging faster? If so, any thoughts?

I've no doubt forgotten something big, but when I think of the best war movies these are recurring themes....

Conspiracy is a good production by BBC/HBO, but apart from Stanley Tucci (and probably money) it is pretty much a British movie.

Edit: looks like the screenplay was American, also the director...etc.

"Im Westen Nicht Neues" - "Westen" being the "Western Front".

Translated, In the West Nothing New but the person who translated the book changed it to All Quiet on the Western Front which then entered the English language as a phrase.

Interestingly, a lot of German veterans were in the area when they made the movie and some of them were the German officers in the film. The scene where a man grabbed barbed wire then was blown apart, actually happened and was witnessed by one of the studio workers.

I love this movie and cannot recommend it enough to those of us who came after this time. I had never really heard of it before watching it a few years ago. Betty Davis called it the best movie ever made. Go, find it, and watch it! [&o][&o][&o]
