Allies open fire on surprised Japanese ships at 9,000 yards WOW! This is the start of a disastrous outcome... not very often do I see IJN forces being surprised in a naval engagement in Dec 41 and in this case two of our DDs are hit hard during the phase the Allied ships were firing on our surprised cruiser squadron... took an eternity until our cruisers fired back, mostly targetting Boise until the modern CL was sunk... one of our heavy cruisers didn't take part in the battle at all and until this point I was only regretting losing two DDs during the first phase of the engagenemt when I then saw the message that my TF was retreating towards it's home base! WTF? I have an amphib force in the hex and my cruisers retreat when they are at 75% ammo and non of them suffered any damage????? [X(]

and all this leads to this disaster... can't remember having seen this, the Allied TF presses on and finally reaches my amphib force and completely destroys it... this will only postpone the fall of Balikpapan and I'm not really worrying about the ground troops as the Rgt will be fully rebuilt within 4 months but losing 2 DDs and 3 TB that could be upgraded to excellent escort ships is not what I like to see... congrats for this Allied victory!

knowing the POW and Repulse weren't in the DEI anymore and Boise being the only modern ship I would never be afraid of sending in four heavy cruisers plus destroyers to take on such a task force during the night and while the first engagement was disappointing already, seeing the enemy not retreating to it's home base after the engagement like my SC TF did was really frustrating to say at least...

Had a TF commander with an agression above 60 IIRC, don't know about Threat Tolerance. True about the Brits, might be a valid tactic later on to send unescorted bombers so they don't fly into CV CAP. Thinking about it my bombers could as well yolo considering my usual die rolls [:D]

these ships are fleeing South from Singapore now when I had ordered KB to move South too to either scare or engage the enemy's light cruiser squadron that shot up my invasion convoy off Balikpapan... guess Mundy thought I would keep covering the unloading at Mersing but I don't see much reason for it now as we have mostly unloaded and the RAF isn't all that much of a threat there... I really don't understand why he kept ships at Singapore and never moved them out, just a waste of ships and points...

Now look at this! Recon shows some 39.000 troops in Northern Malay, so we expect around 20.000 men at that base. No idea what Mundy is planning, Singapore shows around 60.000 troops so I guess he moved those North as long as the railline was open. He could also moved in reinforcements as he's doing at Rabaul but I'd think that would be crazy. All he brings to Malaya will be destroyed so perhaps he's trying to evacuate those troops in the North but that will also be a maximum risk operation with all the IJNAF bombers in the area.

If he really moved those troops out of Singapore my hammer there should take the base without any problems as I have literally brought the kitchen sink as I want to take Singers asap to then spread out.

really don't get it... why are those destroyers still sitting at Soerabaja? Now I know that there will be ample of DDs around for the Allied later on and those early DDs are of limited use later on but still, losing them for no gain or reason seems to be a waste for me... not that KB's strike could be devastating to destroyers at any time as roughly 100 bombers manage to sink only three destroyers in good weather...

recon of Soerabaja showed more than 60 ships in port so we ordered a port strike and hit 19 of them which is pretty disappointing considering a strike of nearly 230 bombers... CL Java was hit five times and none of the 250kg SAP bombs could penetrate her belt nor deck armor!!! WTF? These bombs penetrate modern US heavy cruiser decks and the old Dutch CL is bomb prove? Serious? The other four light cruisers in port are all damaged and won't be combat ready so this leaves the Allied with one light cruiser operable in the DEI I guess...

we keep bombing the port to destroy some shipping and this time Java takes some 800kg AP bombs that penetrate her deck armor... was amazing to see some 250kg bombs did and some didn't penetrate the deck armor... was there a change with some patch? Was always used to penetration being all or nothing... this is the retaliation for the attack on my Balikpapan invasion but in the end it was more like a gift of the Allied commander as I can't figure out why he would send those ships back when KB was nearing Soerabaja being spotted daily... I'd needed two full speed turns to even catch up with the CL/DD if they moved South at normal speed...

today's highlight when the Japanese Army shock attacks over the river into Singapore... we get a 3:1 and completely destroy the forst but we missed a total victory by whopping 38pts adjusted av... 38pts is 0,83% of our base av... what can I say... anyways, there is no doubt that Singapore will fall in Jan 42 and then my divisions are free to play with... all our Inf Divs are in very good shape, two armored Rgts have been hit hard, both are down to 55% strenght but these are easily rebuilt... I expect the base to fall within my next two attacks but at the moment the divisions are ordered to rest as their disruption is up at average 70 and fat at 50+ as well...

not sure what the maximum av is for the Allied holding Singapore when all units are there but seeing "only" 895 base av makes me pretty sure the spotted British units in Northern Malaya were ordered to bail out on the rail... those units are now spotted moving NE... no idea what Mundy is planning, those units can't go anywhere from there...
