Yeah, this is definitely a game where you almost HAVE to start with the small scenarios, just to get a grasp on some of the mechanics.

Unless you got your small scenario primer training done in Uncommon Valor.

Wow - haven't fired that one up in quite some time. And if you want to go into ancient history there is always Pacwar, but the game engine is different.

Out for my daily 3-mi walk (5k for you metric folks) this morning something else struck me about the price point of this game. The cost without discount ($70) was about what I pay for a bottle of whiskey (Glenfiddich, single malt). With 30% discount, was even cheaper. I suspect this game will last me a whole lot longer than the bottle of whiskey will. [:)]

Man, a word of caution - this game will make you buy more whiskey [:D]

We have high "sin taxes" here that accounts for the $15 to $20 price difference. [:(]

And there are various marks of Glenfiddich, usually the more aged cost more.

I'm afraid I always get the 12-year old. But maybe one day I'll splurge and get the 21-year old (i.e., when I retire).

Well, see if you can get a sip from a friend before you splurge. I bought the 18 year Glenmorangie and found I didn't like it as much as the 15 year version. I was annoyed with myself for spending the extra $ for something I didn't like as much. Everyone's palate has its own preferences and if you can please yours for a lesser price, life is good!

Older generally has more of a 'peaty' 'flavor'. Its an acquired taste. It too prefer my 15 year old.

Definitely wait around for one of the Matrix sales, War in the Pacific:AE is a good deal when on sale.
To my mind, part of the essential arithmetic is allowing for such a niche product; i.e., if you want the best example of WW2 Pacific Theater grand strategy... this is it. Period. I think that is worth a premium. And besides, Andy Mac was just hovering around releasing (unofficial) scenario 1 and 2 updates to AI, units and map city locations 10 YEARS after launch and quite a few since official Matrix improvement support ended. Adding additional cities in certain locations will help the AI execute the plans better, so it's all good to my thinking.
Just be ready to set aside some time to browse this forum and find the tools and tips, etc. the community has so graciously provided. Kull's Allied and Japanese Start spreadsheets are a godsend for newbs on a mission to play the full campaign.
Cheers!

Game is expensive, but sometimes able to buy it with extra discount.

It's great value for money: I've sunk way too much time into this game, and I have every intention of sinking even more time into it. At cost per hour played, you get an excellent return.

Looks like the OP never came back...here anyway.

Although it rather looks like he has had WITPAE for at least 5 years, and well before the above post - see post Post #: 5325

I always find it to be quite informative to check on a poster's history. Ian, you greatly underestimated how long the OP has had AE. Post #1705 in this thread:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.a ... =
shows he has had the game since at least August 2009. Which is no later than 2 months after the game was released. Other threads older than the ones you posted confirm his ownership of the game. Hence the premise of all those who answered in this thread thinking the OP was weighing up whether the cost justified buying the game was merited, were wrong. The OP already had the game and his concern had earlier been whether he needed to buy the game again, at what he thought was a too high price, when he had to move from Win7 to Win10.

It's expensive, I agree.
But that's why there are sales. This has very devout following.

Apart from that, his spelling is appalling.

It is not expensive for what you get. Any game is expensive if you buy it but don't play it because it is garbage.
