It was sad. I did some lessons at an elementary school in the US and made the mistake of complimenting the cooking at of one of the schools. They all got the same ingredients one cook took the food and made it tasty the other schools the kids called it “lunch lady barf”.

Foolish me thought that on an off chance they might ask what she was doing and maybe implement/share with the other schools. No, she was disciplined for making the other schools in the district look bad.

Yes, too much food now is premade, just warm it and serve. One cook at the assisted living place that I was at would cook everything at three hundred and fifty degrees for two hours - including the hockey pucks that started out as hamburger patties.

My stepmother would make things like homemade pizza and caramel rolls. When she made caramels rolls at home, she doubled the recipe. She only used six and a half to seven cups of flour for a single recipe - now double that! [:D]

I've got some base force and engineers unloading now at Lunga. It is quite difficult getting them loaded up at Luganville with the small port there. The Guadalcanal scenario starts off with a huge fleet loaded there "in dock" which cannot be replicated after undocking them.

It has cost me to get those men ashore. Lost a DD, and an xAK or something, Gramium or something like that name, is heavily damaged and trying to make land at Lunga. Stupid TF commander headed for open waters and the Bettys got them. I had some carrier Wildcats nearby, so it cost them: 13 shot down by fighters, 1 taken down by flak, 2 damaged. I hope I won't be hearing from Aunty Betty for a while. Back at Luganville I am loading up some engineers to go to Tulagi. I had a supply ship docked there, but after a turn, no unloading. What a dumbass I am. Next turn I checked the port, damage in the red at 90. I sent the ship next door to unload at Luganville. Lesson learned: read the fine print. I now realize the only supply they will get will be the automatic trickle from Lunga plus whatever I can bring in via amphibious supply, which is next on the list.

My heart jumped into my throat: Lexington got a torpedo hit from a sub, but lucky stars it did not detonate. My escorts pounded the sub, 7 hits which I hope means it drops to the seabed in one last dive. Over at Tulagi, earlier, the ASW had some fun. Forced a mini sub to the surface and a cruiser and North Carolina worked it over and turned it into confetti.

I'm still making mistakes, but I am learning from them. This scenario is a good sandbox for learning the game.

Load the engineers on an amphibious TF or even a fast TF. They will repair the port facilities.

Believe it or not, you can put a commercial load (100%) on an AK type and put it into an amphibious TF if it is loaded only with supplies. [:D]

Much depends whether the hits were penetrating or not. I have seen I-boats take over 30 minor hits and survive. But if you get about 5 penetrating hits it should be toast. This is one of those moments when you need to listen on the earphones at the end of combat for sinking sounds. That will often confirm a sinking even if the Combat Report is vague about it. But if the ASW combat is the last action in a naval phase, the sinking sounds could be from another combat during that phase.

In my exp 7 hits will generally put down a sub. Beware the Betties....if you are playing on 'hard' the IJN seems to never run out of them.

I am now craving stew, with snow on the way that is not going to happen.

Yep, it always pays to take the time to watch the combat animations, it’s enlightening. Don’t wait to start a grand campaign for that, check what consequences some damage messages have, looking at the various sys/flot/eng damage (minor/major).

I've seen system damage after one of my subs took a rattling. So far, nothing more serious.

Burst light bulbs maybe. But that system damage can add up and then things don't work right. Just like an overflowing toilet on a submerged U-Boat!

That is a good one.

How about this one. I get up on stage with an electric drill with a large drill bit in it and drill a big hole through my right boot where the big toe is! Think if a glowing, green liquid came out and I say "No pain, no pain at all!" Then lift my boot and push a rod right through the hole! If I could get that recorded, I would post it for Zorch to enjoy!

Put tootsie rolls in the microwave to soften them, then twist them into shape and narrow the ends. After cleaning a litter box, washing your hands, then come out and put one in your mouth saying "Chewy but tasty!"

Maybe even decorate the yellow snow with one . . . [:D]

Then again, people in the largest metropolitan area nearby claim that we drink a lot here but we actually drink a lot anywhere. At one time, my hometown actually had a higher per captia consumption of beer than Germany but I don't know if it was as strong as German bier.

Re: Guadalcanal,
Until I played this campaign, I never knew Japanese midget subs were involved at Guadalcanal. Its not mentioned at all in most histories. Some good info about them at combinedfleet site "Midget Submarines in the Solomons 1942"

They are a real PITA. Once in a while they hit something, and even if they do not, they force you to expend your ASW ordnance. However, you seem to have a much higher chance of hurting or killing them in those shallow waters. I've had two forced to surface, which then became gunnery targets for North Carolina, Minneapolis and Vincennes. [:D]

Put some float planes on ASW at 1000 feet . . . [:D]
