Maybe try a health food store for the currants or go online. We used to grow a lot of currents (actually my step-grandfather) and yes they do have a good flavor. Especially when made into juice to drink for breakfast! [X(]

Were banned in the US (Fed and State) to grow or import for many years. However, more recently some states have allowed them back as Feds no longer ban, just some states have removed ban. I live in Maine now and still have ban, can not grow or import. Can not even get them through Amazon or the like. Even tried to by the juice drink for breakfast just not happening.

When I read stories like that I give my head a cynical shake, all that "land of the free" stuff. "We're from the government and we are here to help you." Not knocking the U.S.; it is the same just about everywhere.

I think Ronald Reagan said that was the start of a horror movie.

I will check around here to see if I can find some.

OK, I'll bite. Here is a relatively quick family lunch recipe, but I really like it.

TACO LUNCH
Serves 6 (or 3 big guys)

1lb Ground Beef (Turkey can be substituted) - brown in pan and drain off fat
Then add in pan:
2 cans 8oz Tomato Sauce
1/8th cup instant minced onion or fresh onion
1 tsp Garlic Salt
1/2 tsp Chili Powder (your favorite)
1/2 tsp Cumin
1/2 tsp Oregano
1/2 tsp Black Pepper
Stir these into beef and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes

Prepare grated cheese, chopped tomatoes, chopped lettuce
Best with soft flour tortillas (small or large size) - we like to have a second large skillet on low to twirl/flip your flour tortilla in until nice and hot before adding meat.
Also works good with ground corn hard shells.
Have your favorite hot sauce such as Tapatio or Texas Pete handy!

I just called the local health food store. Dried currents (bulk but due to this situation they packed the stuff up) are about 1USD per about 6 ounces. [:D]

Investigate, observe, and report things of interest - that is what I was trained to do!
There is a pretty blonde over there, a pretty blonde and a brunette over there. "Oh you want coffee, follow me!" I said as I got in my vehicle on a cool, foggy, damp September morning then headed to a BAKERY! [:'(]

If you have ever read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair you will know why Teddy pushed for the FDA. He was reading it while eating his breakfast sausage - he did not finish his sausage. [:)]

Problem is also in America companies have a way of calling something, something it is not in order to fetch a higher price.

Raisins called currants, Round bread called bagels, etc. etc.

Pretty soon the consumer has no idea what the item actually is and the real thing, higher quality more pricy, disappears off the shelf.

Just searched Amazon and they had all kinds of "currants" though said not to confuse with currant berry as they were not the same thing. (Just listing raisins as currants) Will keep trying though so far all I get is, "Yes, we have currants" only to bring out raisins.

It is something I find frustrating living in the US, wish that companies would just say what they are selling instead of giving it a name of something else, usually a superior product, then trying to sucker you into paying a higher price for something that is not.

Ironic that they then complain that China is doing pretty much the same thing; though acting more like we did 100 some years ago.

I am thinking that dried craneberries (cranberries) or "craisins" might also work, the taste may be more like the current than the dried grape.

I did find dried currents at the health food co-op. They have them prepackaged now instead of the bulk dispensers. It is about 6 ounces for 3.99 USD. I will measure one tomorrow for volume.

The also had small cans of wabbit food for Sweet Pea. I bought one and I will open it for her tomorrow . . . [:D]

That would be an amazing price for black or red currants.

If you desire it, I can ask how much for them to be vacume sealed since they would travel better than those plastic containers like from the deli.

The two around me tried to sell me raisins they were calling currants. Same with a restaurant that sold what they were calling currant scones. They were supposed to be English scones vs American scones so I was hoping they might actually be what they were calling them, currants. But no, raisins.

Unfortunately, in US they call them zante as a way to skirt calling them raisins because Zante was the Greek island that produced the most Greek raisins. Since no such thing as a zante currant then we can call them that and not get sued.

In the US they will be labeled as black currant, red currant, white currant, or currant berry. If not then generally they are mislabeling raisins as currents. And selling you small raisins at a slightly inflated price.

So hey, Raisins or Zante Currants (which do not exist)(red, black, white currants); which sounds more expensive?
Lets call them Currents as they cost much more and are a superior product for cooking. Then we can pay little for small raisins and make them sound like something that is costly and charge more than we could for raisins. But we can undercut people who actually sell currants. The customer will never know and we will make more profit.

But thank you for seeing if you have some near you. [:)]

I took a better look and ate some, those are the zante currents, aka raisins . . . [:(]

I will keep looking . . .

The problem is that gooseberries can carry a fungus that causes Rust on white pines and I do believe that currents are related so they might also harbor that rust. So they are probably banned due to that - or were banned.

I just remembered something else about the German lady who offered me the German soldier's book. He also had a German-Russian dictionary that he kept from his Ost Front days. I flipped through it and was amused to see that the German word for [alcohol] drink is "kern" for "corn" liquor. I thought of the character Kern from the movie "Cross of Iron" who got drunk and on the occasion of Sgt. Steiner's birthday.

One more story, while I am here.

I've got a pal whose Austrian grandfather served in the invasion of France and elsewhere. He was in charge of an 88MM piece. My buddy told me that Opa was a bit of a jerk in his youth. As they were going through a French village he saw a home with a nice, flowered front garden. He told the driver of the prime mover to "drive over Frenchie's garden. They were the first vehicle in their little column. The driver obeyed the order and drove over the garden, and just behind him the second vehicle, which remained in column, hit a mine and exploded. To think, if Opa wasn't such a jerk he wouldn't have had grandchildren.

Edit: Oops, I posted this in the wrong thread. It was supposed to go into the thread where we talking about old veterans and their left behind log books and such. Sorry.

They were banned but are now grown in a few places here in the Northeast.
Found a few farms where you can pick your own, one each in Pennsylvania, New York & Vermont. Maybe they ship as well.
Vermont: cherryhillfarmvt.com (couldn't get to the website but might be due to the Verizon cable that was cut in Brooklyn a few days ago)
New York: Greenfieldsforever.net
Pennsylvania: http://www.springmountainfarms.com/

Thank you. Will_L

The Pennsylvania one had the berries, the other two had preserves which could be used for Jammie Dodgers. Have to give the Pennsylvania one a ring and see if they would ship. Then could dry and Mmmm

Digging a little back:

Symon
Woof !! Lamb Chili. White beans, black beans, and some nice chili sauce. Onions, tomatoes, duh. Cumin, duh. Dried seeded Ancho and Pasilla chiles, and a skoosh of Guahillo; Into the coffee grinder and out comes perfection. Cook real long, on low heat; you want them flavors to combine into forever land.

Serve over basmati rice, with shredded green onions and cilantro as a garnish. Maybe a dollop of yogurt or sour cream as a topping. I had some left over tatziki that worked real well. Yum. JWE

US87891
Good, but Swedish meatballs. 1lb gr beef, 1/2lb pond gr pork. Sauteed onion, bread crumbs, egg, allspice/nutmeg, in a blender to make a glop. Combine glop with meat and mix by hand. Roll into teeny balls. Put on wire rack. Oven at 350 for 20 minutes.

In a big pan, render, ½ cup flour, 2 cups beef broth, ½ cup milk, allspice/nutmeg, salt/pepper; make egg noodles. Combine meatballs with sauce. Serve over, or with egg noodles.

John, I grant you make some tasty chili, but you are simply a Cali tyro . Remember you once came to College Station for a chili cook-off and I had to hit you with an epi pen ? Ah, youth, it’s so wasted on the young
