I don't think there was an easy year, but personally I'd argue those were the two toughest. I didn't claim 41 was tougher above and I think both are a big challenge for Soviet players in the game as well, but a lot of the examples we've seen from folks have been based on 1941 battles.

42 can be a very difficult year for the Soviet player. Although he has more men on the frontline, his national morale is actually lower than it is in summer 1941, so many of the unit's can be very brittle. A lot depends on the state of the German Army when the summer of 42 arrives. Historically it was greatly weakened. My understanding is that Army Group North was basically demotorized and divisions were reduced in size in order to strengthen the attack in the south. So while the Germans are very dangerous and the Soviets brittle, the Germans aren't as strong as they were across the front in 1941. What's different for the Soviets is they have less ground to give up than they did in 41.
