January 21 - 22, 1942

The air bridge to Palembang seems to be working and supplies are starting to pick up. I'll see how long it lasts. The base is again shelled by cruisers and destroyers, and in addition, the Japanese land another division, namely the 33rd Division. Not long ago, intelligence reported to me that preparations were still being made for an attack on Rangoon. Her preparation will be very low. In total, the opponent at Palembang has a strength of about four divisions. Intelligence also informs me that another convoy is heading towards Benkolen. We'll see if it's true.
Not much going on elsewhere. The Changsha defenders raised the fort to 3 again, so the Japanese sacrificed their 10k men unnecessarily.

Today is a slightly optimistic day. At night, Japanese battleships shell Lautem in Timor. An unimportant target with minimal defenses. It is likely that the Japanese have moved to Surabaya AE and are replenishing here. I will increase submarine surveillance of this port.

Image

A few days ago, intelligence reported that the 144th Regiment was sailing to Wake to land there. The last time this unit captured Guam, I sent two aircraft carriers with an escort to verify this report. I think the whole regiment drowned. Another TF is reported nearby. Only one ship, but the survey reported that it also attacked and hit the tanker Naruto. Decision making is hard. Since it is January 1942, I will play very carefully. Kido Butai is now probably one day sailing from Truk, one day refueling and a third day may be within range. But it could have refueled earlier from the tankers, so I decide to make a quick retreat.

The Japanese decided to attack Palembang and test the defenses. Although they managed to reduce the fortifications to 2, but they are repulsed and we will see how the fight continues. I managed to slightly increase the stock again, so I hope I can last a little longer. The base will fall, but here and in Singapore I must delay as long as possible. Once Palembang falls, Australia and India will be in danger. Unfortunately, I don't know if all the units were involved or if it was a defense test.

The Japanese have main targets and the actions are the same every day. Primarily massive raids with the aim of depleting units and supplies. Surprisingly today a new attack on Palembang, I expected the Japanese to rest a bit. But the result is good for me, because a large number of forces are destroyed, not just disabled.

Japanese submarines operate in large numbers off the west coast and around major bases. I'm trying to keep them underwater with patrol planes, but I don't know if it's effective, and it ties me up with a large number of planes that I could use for training. Unpleasantly.

My submarines are also under surveillance. Today dive bombers attacked submarines around Truk => KB arrived. KXV is damaged by planes off Surabaya and has to sail for repairs.

Even in Ichang, the Japanese tried to bypass my troops defending the road. One auxiliary division encountered the entire 20th Army Group and was deservedly punished.

A TF of cruisers sent towards Lae is spotted by enemy dive bombers. They might be from Rabaul, but there might be an aircraft carrier nearby. I take a cautious step back. Another part of the AVG got into action today with the aim of defending Nanyang from airstrikes. This was done and at least 6 Ki-30 Ann are shot down. Cpt. Gunvordahl has already scored his 12th kill and is the most successful Allied pilot.

Not wanting to take too many chances, I pulled the TF around the USS Enterprise a bit closer to Australia and sent a surface TF to the Koapang landing site. There are only 3 ships left in place, which I quickly sunk. The other ships departed. Since the reconnaissance later found about 30 fighters at the nearby airfield in Lautem, it was probably a trap for my onboard air force, which would probably suffer unpleasant losses. Part of the Guard Mixed Bde is held at Koapang. The rest went down with the ships, which is a nice catch.

The Japanese land in Sumatra at Tandjoengbalai. The enemy will advance north to Medan. In China, I decided to make the enemy a little angry. Part of his troops advanced across the river west of Ichang and then tried to cut off my 26th Army Group holding the bridges across the river. Ichang is probably weakly defended now, so I decided to take Ichang with a surprise strike. This was done today and although I have some losses, the city is occupied by the Chinese army. Now I could try to surround the Japanese troops across the river, but that would put me in bad terrain and lose my ability to move. I'll just hold the city, move part of the 20th Army Group here and hopefully force the enemy to withdraw part of their forces here. I need the Japanese not to increase the pressure on Changsha.

How did that AK manage to sink I-24? Ramming? And what kind of escort do you think I-24 should have had? ;)

Those Japanese landings on Sumatra suggest he is making the Strait of Malacca safe for passage of ships to the Bay of Bengal. With Palembang still in your hands he should have been sending his troops there, or to a port nearby.

Summary January 1942

It’s the end of January and with it the month’s summary. According to other AARs, the overall situation does not deviate from normal. I started playing the game to have a comparison with Deaniks. Here the opponent uses the air force much more for massive airstrikes on their main targets in DEI and China. It’s really annoying, but it also brings me success. The Japanese have double the loss of aircraft! The Japanese are partly to blame for this because I think they don’t give their pilots enough rest and have high operational losses. Two AVG squadrons then shot down another 212 aircraft.

Image

Burma
As you can see from the map, there is peace in Burma. The Japanese are doing an intensive recon of my bases and that’s why I keep at least a small unit everywhere. I don’t want them to do paradrops somewhere. I am not yet aware of any large unit going to the Burmese front. West of Chiang Mai I detected a probably tank unit advancing towards Pegu.

Image

Malaya
Japanese forces occupied all of Malaya and attacked Singapore directly at the end of the month. I think they don’t have enough forces to capture the fortress quickly, so I hope I can stay here at least until March. No massive airstrikes yet, only Ki-43’s checking so I don’t get angry. I have nothing to do at the moment. I have withdrawn the rest of the fighter planes to India and am re-arming them.

DEI
The Japanese clearly dominate in this area. At the start of the war, Kido Butai was here and forced me to withdraw all surface forces out of her reach. I thus prevented more losses on the ships. But at the same time, I made the mistake of not going back fast enough. I could complicate the enemy’s landing operations. Borneo is in Japanese hands with the exception of Tarakan. In Java I only symbolically hold Batavia and Bandoeng from where I supply Palembang with planes. The same situation is in Sumatra. I’m holding Palembang against the odds, the rest are Japanese or disembarking here. The Japanese continue to reinforce troops in Palembang and there will be a bloody battle for the city. I have nowhere to retreat and I don’t want to. I still don’t understand why in both Java and Sumatra the opponent did not advance by land, but landed at every base on the coast. Maybe because of the speed, but where the artillery was stronger, he also had ship losses.

Image

It’s difficult for me to deploy a fleet here now. After losing Surabaya I have nowhere to refuel and have to refuel from small tankers at sea or in Perth, Australia. The Java Sea is full of Japanese submarines and under the control of planes from Balikpapan and Singkawang. So I stay on the outer edge and wait for an opportunity. I managed to destroy the invasion fleet off Koapang, drowning almost the entire Guard Mixed Bde. Sometimes one of my Dutch subs is successful. Soon they will have nowhere to replenish their torpedoes and the nearest bases are in Perth and Ceylon. I plan to send half of them to the Indian Ocean to defend the Indian coast, as I have no doubt that an invasion will occur.

Image

Pacific
Nothing to write about yet. The Japanese occupied several empty bases - Tulagi, Shortland, Baker Island, Canton Island. Twice they attempted to invade Wake. It was repulsed by ground troops in December, and in January I was able, through intelligence, to sink the 144th Infantry while moving from Guam to Wake. I won’t reinforce him, because you can’t place a strong garrison here, but I will try to transport, at least supplies. Kido Butai attempted a raid into the Pago Pago area but was unsuccessful. I managed to locate the KB already in the area of the Solomon Islands and I redirected all the convoys in time. So for a whole month KB was on the way from DEI to Japan and then to the South Pacific and back to Truk. I don’t know where they are right now.

China
The Japanese begin to advance slowly. Up north near Paotow they managed to push out of the mountains, but I don’t see any progress yet. The northern front is probably not important to either side. One tank unit is moving north of Yenan, but I don’t know its exact position or target. I won’t look for them, they will appear somewhere. The Japanese cleared the area west of Kaifeng and the first units advanced to Nanyang. I have less defense here because I don’t want to give the Japanese bases without a fight. Some forces are trying to bypass my positions in the mountains at Loayng. I’m bringing reinforcements here, but I won’t back down. I can stay in the mountains for a long time, and if my troops find themselves in Jaon’s rear, they will tie up his forces or I will succeed in blocking the movement of supplies.

The main Japanese forces advance on the city of Changsha from the east. So far I have managed to stop the advance of the Japanese from the south. From the south, the Japanese are also advancing on Kukong, which is now the target of massive air raids. In the event that the city falls, the Japanese will open the way from the south and I will have to clear the Changsha area. I think the Japanese know this very well because intelligence reports troops moving by sea to Amoy. So the pressure from the south will increase. I will keep the city itself. Changsha is not abandoned. So far I have also managed to stop the advance from the west at Liuchow and the Japanese had to retreat back across the river.

I caused minor problems for the Japanese at Ichang. The 26th Army Group was blocking the road from Ichang to Changteh and therefore the Japanese decided to bypass it from the north. They left only one division to defend Ichang. So I waited for the Japanese to try to bypass me and the 20th Army Group in ambush crushed this bypass. At the same time, the 26th Group moved across the river in a swift strike and captured Ichang on the first day. My plan now is to advance part of the 20th Army Group and push the Japanese further away from Ichang. I have no greater ambitions and I have to think that the 20th and 26th army groups are my strongest groupings and I will have to quickly withdraw them back to the west.

The airstrikes on Kukong are still escalating. About 200 bombers arrive today and bomb the whole area. There is nothing I can do about it and it will be necessary to withdraw from Kukong to better positions.

Today, the Japanese again attack Palembang, Batavia, Changsha and Medan. There are losses on both sides.

I deployed AVG again today because the impudence of the Japanese knows no bounds. Japanese bombers fly to Chunking without escort. CPT Grunvordahl improved his record to 16 kills. I don't think I would want to be Japan's minister of war industry. Since I'm starting to get more 80+ pilots, I decided to move them to TRACOM and save them for later fights. Why lose them in a meaningless skirmish over China.

Today is a very bad day. The Japanese again attacked Palembang and the remnants of the defenders retreated. I'm rather disappointed. I was hoping to delay the Japanese more. Nor did it manage to damage the oil fields and refineries. Only 51 Oil and 56 Refineries are damaged. I guess I couldn't do more.

The Japanese have also captured Paotow in northern China and are advancing on Lanchow. At least I managed to hold off the entire Japanese division for two months.

Today's only success is driving the advanced units from Bandoeng and destroying about 20 Japanese tanks.

The Japanese land at Gasmata. I airlifted most of the units that retreated here from Rabaul to Port Moresby. The Japanese continue their massive bombardment of Kukong and I decide to retreat to Changsha. This position is unsustainable and I am losing units unnecessarily. AVG deployed again at Changsha and Chinese fighter squadron at Nanyang. I destroyed 11 Japanese planes in the air with 3 of my own losses. That's not bad.
Morning Air attack on 72nd Chinese Corps, at 82,53 , near Changsha

Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

A6M2 Zero x 22
D3A1 Val x 3

Allied aircraft
H81-A3 x 5
P-40E Warhawk x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed
D3A1 Val: 2 destroyed

No Allied losses
Unfortunately, I also make mistakes. I forgot to cancel the air supply to Palembang and the Japanese flak had a practice. Fortunately, I only lost 4 planes. I have nowhere to move or convert them. Looking at Palembang today, it looks like 150 Oil and 168 Refineries are damaged. I don't know if FOW applies to this, but that would be nice.

I found out today that the Japanese are massing tank units at Nanyang. I don't know if they will head to Sian or Ankang, but I am ready for either option. From Indochina, the Japanese marched over the mountains to Mengtze. There's no defense here, but I don't think I'm in much danger from here. Still, I send reinforcements to Kunming and the bombers are ordered to attack. This will also let me know what unit is here.
