Since there doesn't seem to be many grunts in this forum, and for those who dislike my postings. I served as an Airborne Ranger 1/75th, 1/506 PIR 101st ABN, 11th SF Detachment (USAR), and the 2/19 Inf Rgt (Recon) 24th INF now the 3rd Div (Marne). 156 parachute jumps, with no injuries! When I became too old to sleep on the ground I ended my military career as a Parachute Rigger, so I could keep jumping. Made my last jump in 1996 at the age of 40! God bless America and mom's apple pie! Oh, and I also am a Fallschirmjager with certified German jump wings.

I was 3/19 back in the day w/24MECH, though it never made much sense to me to put a MECH DIV in a swamp...

They were just turning mechanized when I was there. At least at Ft Stewart we didn't have to dig improved positions because the water table was so low there! They let us drive 113's from the Georgia NG for practice. We were crashing in to everything. Georgia lost a lot of trees that day! What the hell is a Taro Leaf anyway?

Bad juju with 113's and trees. Hit a dead one once and it was full of ants and termites. I was TC and spent the next ten minutes trying to get kill on a bazillion of the nasties that had gotten inside all that I consider a "no bug zone"...

Now that I'm in Hawaii, I'm told the Taro is an important food group, though I'm not sure why...

Actually neither amigo. Second tour here and am at HQ Air Force Weather Agency. Military weather man keeping the flyboys flying... [8D] They still say once ya get on it, ya never get "offutt", but I left the first time after 18months and came back this time on my own... Love it here....

Ahhhhhh. 40 kts out of an Adams class?? That would be a miracle![:D] This wouldn't be a sea story would it, or did they replace NSFO with croton oil... We got the Adams and Barney up to 33 1/2 one time and it looked like we were laying a smoke screen, and standing on the sig bridge was
exhilarating...

Of course you know the difference between a sea story and a fairy tale. A fairy tale begins "Once upon a time," a sea story begins "Now this ain't no....."

We had just come out of the Long Beach Yards in November 75 with a brand new propulsion plant, a clean hull and a Captain with a chip on his shoulder. After finishing our workups and exams we were moving to San Diego to endure Reftra. We also had alot of help in the from a weather front that was moving south providing following seas and a pretty strong tail wind and we only did once and the ship damn near shook apart in the process. The offical top speed reached (not sustained)was 40.2 knots. Contrary to the phrase, there was a hell of a lot of smoke[:D]

Always knew I was in the wrong fleet. We had to go to Gitmo - now there is a lovely place - 5 women, 5,000 Marines, and 50,000,000 Iguana. Got lots of sea stories from Gitmo, like the time a newly hatched POOW on the quarter deck saw his first iguana, thought it was a sea monster, shot the sucker, and put the whole base on alert. I don't know much about that, all I ever saw was the inside of the radio shack, or a sick transmitter.

So, the Waddell was one of those selected for the SLEP program. They were going to do the whole class, but the tightwads in Congress didn't think the USN needed them anymore. Heavens, an Adams with a new plant & 40 kts. - was it still steam or did they put a warp engine it her?

I alwas liked the outdoor theatre at Gitmo. Buy a 12 pack of beer put it on ice and watch a movie under the stars.

Got tired of humping a ruck overland, wanted to ride a while.

When I reported for duty in March of 75 they had her completely gutted and I spent many a loooong day down in the bilges(dry at the time) putting out garbage fires that had been started by the welders putting the boilers back in. We used to sit down there and wait for the sparks to fall in the garbage the yard workers threw down there[:@]

We had two brand new(or maybe rebuilt) 1200 psi steam plants

The Wadoobie was sold to the Greek navy around '90 and then they decommisioned her last year I believe[&:].
When I was stationed on her, we considered her a lucky ship as she made all of her commitments, never broke down and only had two semi-serious accidents. We had bos'n get clobbered by a snapped line during unrep(he recovered fully) and a GM get washed over the side in the straits of Taiwan (we had him back on board in less than 15 minutes)

I t seems like we ate the same dirt together.....[:'(].....I spent Christmas Day 1990 with Eagle.....You CO was a nice chap.....
