When I was younger my father had a nationaly syndicated newspaper computer game column. As you can imagine we had every computer gamer ever made come into our house. I think the time frame was early 1980s to mid 1990s \
I can't remember tall of the games but the ones that come to mind the most were:
Wizardry (text based)
Ultima
Zelda
Battle of Britain, I remember ths computer game came with board.
Any Gary Grisby games!!!![&o] my favs were War in Russia and Pacific War!!!
North Atlantic 86'
Rapid Deployment Force
Of course the games my dad was getting from the reps at that time were all Beta's so they had a tendancy to be a bit buggy to say the least. I remember him going to the office At the Atlanta Journel and Constitution every few months with three or four huge trash bags of games, as he descibed the scene was at times very chaotic and disruptice at work what with himwalking in with games galore for everyone. He had to get rid of them because he was getting upwards of five games a day, no room for all of them!
So growing up for me was kinda like a kid in computer game paradise.[:D]

my brother came home from college with Blitzkrieg and Gettysburg by AH. That was mid-60's. First satisfactory computer game I remember was Harpoon. There was some small unit Nato thing before that.

First games beyond Risk were:
Boardgame: Flattop
Computer Games: Carrier Force, Guadalcanal Campaign and Kampfgruppe
Oh those heady days of youth.
I think Guadalcanal Campaign was the first complete addiction I had - a buddy of mine and I would hot seat that one for hours on end on my old Apple II+... Kampfgruppe was a close second though.

I've played/owned a lot of wargames. Probably Warpwar and Starfire were the first, but I am not sure they would be classified as wargames. If not, Rise and Decline would probably be the first true wargame I played. Others I've played: Dark Nebula, Starfire, Warp War, Tactics II, Rise and Decline of the 3rd Reich, Quatre Bras, Europa, Siege of Jerusalem, Titan, Shell Shock, Risk/Shogun/Axis and Allies/LotR Risk, Harpoon, Airforce, Dauntless, AirWar
and probably another dozen or more I can't recall atm.

boardgame: Flat Top
cool games, even now, when played on a c64-emulator.

My first board game was Axis and Allies, and my first computer/console was the original Pacific Theater of Operations by Koei, for the Sega Genesis. I wish I never sold that game, it was sweet.

Tactics II by Avalon Hill (1962). Who could believe 15 pages of instructions! Last board game was SPI's War in Europe. Thank God for computers. I had War in Europe in the guest room and War in the Pacific in the garage, both at the same time. Then I got married and you probably know the rest.

Stalingrad in 1972, followed by Afrika Korps and D-Day. I probably own over 50 or sixty games including my S&Ts. Saw my first monster game, War Between the States, at the MIT Strategic Game Society in the middle seventies. I also learned to play Naval miniatures and D&D with that group.

The Atomic Games "World at War" series was/is another good one. The Gold Juno and Sword game/sceanario was a great one...terrific battle around Caen between the Brits/Canadians (my old gaming buddy) and myself with only the 21st PZ, the 12th SS and Panzer Lehr and a few other ragtag units to stop him with [:D] !!! The Crusader and Stalingrad segments were also great. Anyone take Stalingrad?????
As far as the first person shooter type genre the only ones worth playing were the WWII flying games especially the Lucas series Battle of Britain, Weapons of the Luftwaffe (nothing like flying a Tub on a strafing mission or a 262 against those nasty B-17's [;)] ) and I forget what the South Pacific version was called and I think it was the first in the series ( that was also great flyimng a Dauntless and dropping an egg on the Soryu [:D] )

My first favorite war game was Task force 1942, plays and looks
a lot like UV except you could enter the battleships and take over
firing on the enemy with the big guns.
