That's curious, because Mehrunes is the one with all the Freespace stuff.

No it isn't! Check it again... when you get site back up and running.

And what comes to scifi shows, even when they have what you say and what I have seen myself, it don't mean milo should make it all the same.

I think Milo and Matrix games can (and should) do a lot better! The level SS has now is so low compared to it's true potential, like a rocket scientist laying bricks![:-]

I believe SS is and will become "the mother of all space sims"!

Inch Allah![&o]

Amen, I think soon not even Homeworld (or HW2) will hold a candle to SS. Im glad I got into it way back..Makes me feel so proud...

Atmosphere capable Capital ships

Even though Milo didn't want it for his universe and as one of SS's most important advantages is it's endless modding possibilities, capital ships should be given an option if they are flyable in the atmosphere or not.
This can be done (because fighters and LCAs are - so it is a matter of scripting and permissions) and it will allow modders to produce ships that perform as on their favourite TV shows/ Movies/anime, like Star Wars, Stargate, Star Blazers, just to mention a few.

This would be really awesome!!![&o]

Again, don't start a war over this thread. I am not saying Milo's capital ships should have this ability. I am saying that this possibility should exist for modders wishing to explore "anti-grav" technology, as there are and always will be some universes that are more fiction than science and the opposite.

it is possible now. Atleast theoreticly. Just give the cap ship so much lift that it only needs to be moving at 1m/s to maintain altitude.
I have not tried this but that's how the fighters do it.

Diabolico, I'd rather not, Mac + Alien computers gives me a headache.

Thatnkfully, that timeline ended with the movie, detonating something a 1/3 the size of the moon, in orbit, has a habit of wiping out the planet ;)

Right, just think of Star Trek IV with the Klingon Bird of Prey decloaking above the whaling ship...awesome, but there would still be the need to cloak it.....
No matter right now.
Perhaps an additional set of landing thrusters similar to the LCAs' that could be addable to a capship in the defs could solve that particular problem.
They would not be very fast, but they could still hover without stalling, just what you need for "ID4" or "V", or " Macross", or "Star Wars" (Victory Star Destroyer!)

I'm inclined to agree with you o this subject DX. What some of us have either forgotten or not known about is that in trying times there is a need for innovation and ideas, creativity if you will.

Try to think back to a certain WWII air operation. The U.S. landed a squadron of bombers(Possibly B-25s) on the deck of an aircraft carrier to conduct a strike. Yes they did have to remove all defensive weapons but in the end the mission was a success.

All you need is an idea and to make it happen and that is how the ball gets rolling. After centuries of warfare you would think that nothing new could be created. Then comes LtCol. Billy Mitchell who created the use of aircraft to assault naval targets. If I'm wrong about this please tell me so cause I hate making such mistakes.

Anyway all I'm saying is that alot of what DX is talking about has already been done before and as such it's very possible to come up with new ways to create new operations. Yes there may be limitations. But the question in that is just how long that limitation will last.

Case in point. If you look at the Japanese you come to realize that they are not just great storytellers but great visionaries as well. I'm a loyal fan of many of their animation movies that involve mecha. Robotech of course is my fav and lately I'm watching alot of Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex Series. Just recently I purchased the new Appleseed 2004. Why am I bring this up you ask? Because just today I saw a news report that mentioned scientist using monkeys to control robotic arms to help them eat. They did this with their own brains!

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... mwithbrain

Embrace the new world to come my friends. Just cause it's not here now or being used at this moment doesn't mean it won't be.

I think the idea of making it possible to launch craft from almost any large spacecraft should be made possible. At the very lease shuttles. How else would it be made possible to gain crew replacements?

In one of my previous posts I mentioned the idea of having crew aboard the ships. Any damage sustained would cause casualties which would negatively effect repairs and operations aboard ship. You would need shuttles to ferry over new supplies and replacement crew members.

Add to that the moral of the crew dependent upon the situation of a campaign or war. The closer one side gets to the others homeworld the harder they fight. Can you imagine the shock if the cruiser you were about to defeat suddenly turned into you to ram you? Or what if the moral on the ship isn't that high and they didn't feel the given situation was worth dying over, so they surrender. Anything is possible. But I digress. [:D]

Either way if the ship has a large enough bay you should be able to land smaller craft in it. I've destroyed enough carriers to know that it's gotta suck for those leftover fighters to not have a place to land.

Also there's an episode of Battlestar Galactica coming up that really backs up DX's point. Some of you may have already seen it if you're in Europe. But the operation they executed was awesome.

Anyway bring on the strike carriers! I'll name mine SOpC 'Spooky' [8D]

You don't need a hangar bay to carry or dock with a shuttle. Just an airlock!

yes, and an airlock is also excellent for tossing people out!

okay so that covers fighters and carriers.

What about stuff like drones? some capital ships having drones that auto patrol a set area around it, maby armed with light cannons or something to itnercept incomming missiles, then having also heaver drones that would attack any capital ships they detect

I'm not sure drones are doable, except through something exceedingly awkward like modeling it on the ships model.
