A Jap BB was spotted up north of the Aleutians yesterday; it was bombed ineffectually. Radio intercepts think that it has pulled back for now. North Pacific command is on a heightened state of awareness for the near future.

SWPac and SoPac continue to work on their organization and planning. Luganville airdrome is ready to accept heavy bombers now; just waiting for the supplies to get shipped up to the base.

November 20, 1942

He mousetraps me over Rangoon and the mediums pay the price for my laziness; the RAF has filed a request with the 10th AF for support from the longer ranged 38’s and 40’s. The heavies make it through though and damage the airfield some more; I cannot wait for the Brits to start receiving their own Liberators soon. The Wellingtons are just not up the Tonies and Tojos.

Finally, a flight of Dutch Hudsons flying out of Townsville pick up a large surface group nearing the Torres Straits from the NW. Sure looks like the Combined Fleet’s carrier divisions. I think the survivor crashed upon landing at home; but the contact report was made.

So, with this new information, several things occur.
1. Transports on the East Coast of AUS move to safer anchorages. Basically, south…duh.
2. SoPac fleet units sortie to support SWPac units.
3. Heavy air units are stood down to prepare to transfer to bases nearer the action.

Here are some tables to peruse. The Allied Command is trying to fight a controlled campaign, while maintaining reserves of planes and pilots. The only problem is the British pilots; we are considering disbanding units to maintain the level of competence. Hopefully, the pressure will slacken on them in the near future.

Not a whole lot going on today; lost the CL Enterprise to a Betty torpedo 300 miles west of Sabang after a bombardment of that position. Continue to track the Jap Carriers near NG. Here goes the first squadron into action! "Bandits! 12 o'clock low!"

November 27, 1942

The threat to the Coral Sea is abated; scouting planes have the Jap carriers moving to the northwest just south of the Amboina/Sorong area. Fleet subs are shadowing the IJN, and were successful in one attack putting a torpedo into an AO; another attack suffered from duds…Normal shipping is starting to resume in the Australian coastal waters.

Some of the action over the last 4-5 days:

Across the river from Mandalay, the combined Anglo-American tactical bombers start to hit a buildup of IJA units just “east” of Pagan. This is not only aiding in ID’ing the ground units there, but will hope to keep them pinned in place there. The NCAC Chinese with some support from the Indian Army will be attacking east of this area in the near future. 2 divisions and 2 brigades with armor support have been noticed to this point.

Finally, a small bombing campaign is started against Lautem. There are no enemy a/c there, but the NORAUS command wishes to keep this field from expanding while we attempt to build up Tenimbar Isl. as a fighter base. So far, NORAUS is VERY disappointed with the results; they know the field is small and the Marauders don’t have full loads at this distance, but the hits are not good. The lead bombardiers are being checked out in test flights to see their competence levels.

December 15, 1942

Today’s summary will concentrate mainly on the Burma front; focusing on the air campaign to date in the central region. The purpose of the campaign is twofold:
One- to eliminate the use of the airfield at Pagan by the IJAAF; thereby forcing them to operate at longer ranges from their Rangoon/Moulmein bases. Additionally, the attacks will cause them to lose supply to the front line units.
Two- to identify and pin down combat units that are on the front line immediately south of Mandalay. This will assist the “NCAC” in it’s attack against the end of the Jap line which is SW of Lashio.

First, we will look at the air campaign over Pagan. This is not a daily mission, or even every other day; the weather often precludes any flying and rest is necessary, though the rest option is becoming less used, as the ground forces are moving into position in the north.

First mission of note – a high level strike by the 2 American heavy groups from Dacca.

So, after this, the damage assessment has the field at 59% damaged. The bombing will continue here for about another week; and, it will start to attack the 50 remaining resources here to deny them to the enemy. Another large medium US bombardment group is just unloading in Ceylon; that, and another Wellington squadron has arrived in India. These, plus the existing mediums, will continue to hit the airfield as necessary. They will also play a part in the ongoing campaign against the ground forces in the area.

The ground attack campaign has been limited to the area directly ‘east’ of Pagan, across the river from Mandalay. Intel has reported the presence of the following units there:
33rd Division
55th Division
8th Tank Regiment

3 months ago, the 23rd Mixed Brigade was believed to be in the area also, but has not been heard from since.

The airstrikes against these troops are mainly from Mandalay across the river, though the mediums from Akyab joined in before the operations against Pagan started.

So, in the end, what is the result? Over the course of 20 some days of bombing, basically by 20-40 planes per raid, the IJA has suffered about 800-1200 casualties and hopefully some disruption. And we know that elements of 3 divisions and 2 brigades are present here. So, when the Chinese move down upon the right flank of this line, next to these units, they can expect a counterattack from here in most likelihood and should prepare for this. This is a large commitment of ground troops to the area by the IJA; a probe will have to be launched from Akyab to determine the amount of troops in the south on the river line.
