Halsey fought tooth and nail to save the Big E, but to no avail! They sold her for scrap, $150K I believe in 1960's dollars. Her tripod mast is at Annapolis and her bell is somewhere (got the details at home). For a ship that fought in every major camapign but one, Coral Sea which she missed by three days, it was a dark moment for American history!

Yeah. When I was old enough to start reading WWII history (about 8 or so) I almost cried when I read that the Enterprise was scrapped.

I had that same thing for both Big E and Sara...[:(]

I was on Google earth last night and found what I think is the BB-Missouri in Pearl Harbor
Is there not a large group of Assault landing craft somewhere on the Eastern Seaboard mothballed since WW2

Also found a naked chick on the beach nearby.[:D][:D][:D]

Nice list Ctangus. Ib've been to the Silversides in Muskegon, Michigan. In fact I spent the night on the sub which you can do. Mighty small accomodations!

I believe also there is a Japanese mini-sub at the Pacific War museum I visited years ago in Nimitz's home town in Fredicksburg, TX.

I've been in the Silversides too - I used to spend a lot of time in the Grand Haven/Spring Lake area. Where in MI are you?

Never stayed there overnight though. I didn't know you could do that.

I imagine that would be James River. That's where the Ghost Fleet currently resides. There are many WW2 ships in it and most cannot be scrapped, due to hazmat concerns.

There's HMS Belfast moored on the River Thames near Tower Bridge. Been there a few times........

I believe that at the site of the USS Massachussetts in Fall River they have a fleet sub from WWII as well. They also have 2 restored PT Boats.
There is a Japanese Kaiten on display at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, CT. At least there was one there last time I visited (early 60s (oh dear me)).

USCGC EAGLE, currently active as the Coast Guard Academy's training ship, is the former German ship HORST WESSEL of WWII vintage. Though training vessels in both services the HORST WESSEL reportedly shot down two Russian a/c during the war, apparently during the evacuation of Courland.

Yes, a sub is there with the Massachussetts along with an ex-East German missile boat (sort of a modern PT only helluva more armed)

Don't forget the Canadian exibits. Haida, the only Tribal class DD is in Hamilton; Sackville, the only Flower class corvette is in Halifax; and I think Fraser, the only example of the 1950s ASW escorts Canada built is in Bedford Basin (I think).

These are the ones I am sure of, because I have seen them.

USS Alabama in Mobile Bay

USS Massachusetts and a DD, a sub and some PT boats in Fall River Mass.

USS Quincy in (you geussed it) Quincy Mass on the Fore River

There is a DD (Fletcher?) in the old Navy Yard in Boston near the Constitution.

There is a Soviet river patrol boat mounted on a platform in downtown Kaliningrad, the city that used to be Koenigsburg.

There are other riverine craft near the Victoria in Kiev. The Victoria is a giant stainless steel victory figure with a truly amazing military museum in the base and loads of hardware on the approaches. Everyone should go to a Soviet war museum sometime, it will change your view of the war.

The dutch minesweeper Abraham Crijnssen is moored at the navy museum in den helder, she escaped to australia disguised as an island.
