Seems as if the "fix" for this wouldn't be that hard. To edit something "in Game" would just have to require both players input. Any time one player "opened" the DB, it would send a "flag" to the other.
If you've both discussed a "problem" that needs dealing with, you both input the same "fix". And if you get a turn with a "flag" and no mention of a problem from your opponant..., you will know you are dealing with a "scumbag" and can take the appropriate measures.

For those who assume that everyone will look over their opponants OB and dispositions while the Editor is opened, they can balance the need to "fix" a problem with the knowledge that BOTH players will have an opportunity to check the other's database. As long as both sides get the same opportunity/suffer the same loss of security, it's not really unfair. And it will make sure that only important problems are "fixed on the spot".

Mike,

I fear this thread is rapidly moving on to other matters [:D]

But I like your idea if it were possible to do. I doubt many people would want to allow their email opponent to see there set up even if they could do the same as it would usually be perceived to help one side more than the other.

But it would allow a third person to make any changes in a PBEM if both sides sent that person their passwords. I would be happy to trust any of my PBEM opponents edit one of my games that they were not playing or any of their opponents if I knew them from the Boards.

Of course it's main use would be in Single Player.

It would be a nice addition but it's not something I personally too concerned over [:)] I'd much rather they expanded the number of aircraft slots in the editor if they are going to spend time on this part of the program [;)]

No ...

You get an email, it has a save attached. You save the file to two different locations. One you play with, the other you open in the editor and screw with. Pretty simple stuff.

It would have the same effect as me posting your game password ... once I did, would you want to continue to play a PBEM game knowing the other player can now see all your moves?

Data is data is data ... once you have access to it, it can not be taken away.

Well, you talk about "trust" as if it were some otherworld ideal. I resumed a game I had with someone who resigned, and the first thing I did was to ask my opponent if he wanted to have my password, too. The opponent never even bothered to reply to this query of mine. Now that is trust. Or, should you prefer, a demonstration that at least some people don't take their game play as seriously as they do their families and real-world jobs.

1. There is a way to change a database for current games. Remember 1.60 (?) patch? It added some changes to database, Japanese player had to activate them.

What!?!? I just upgraded to 1.6 in a stock game and dont know anything about having to activate changes. What did I miss?

Preferences and options screen. there is a button for games started before 1.6 to change database. Something like "apply 1.6 database changes". If it was done already - it says "1.6 database changes were applied" or something. Only Japanese player can do this.

Once again, I'll add my (almost certainly futile) voice to those calling for an in-game editor. Make it for ai games only, for all I care, just give me the darn editor! I'm fed up with editing a scenario file, then having to trash several hours of game-play because I missed something, or because I want to add something else...I don't play PBEM, don't care about PBEM. People saying it'll spoil the game for PBEM play don't understand that they're talking to someone deaf in that ear...

Steve.

so I waited for some die-hard Torontonian to defend the dignity and honour of this great city.

Not going to happen ... people live here because of jobs that pay, not because they like to live here.

But, it pays more yet it costs more. Genius that.[;)]

I don't play pbem.
I just don't feel that it is fair for those of us who choose not to pbem.
I have followed this prodject from the start and had I known then that this game would be made for pbem only then I would not have bought it.

Why can't a lil screen come up saying the game has been altered like when it is edited, so the pbem players would not be so paranoid.
Sounds easy to me.

I don't think this lil addition is a lot that I am asking for.[;)]

There has got to be some kinda arrangment that can be made to satisfy everyone and not just the paranoid group.

Lets be fair to those that donot pbem.

Users: Bleat bleat bleat ...
Developers: Complacency complacency complacency ...

Rant point #1: You know, what with Windows being how it is (i.e memory trampling is allowed, at least in earlier versions), it should be technically possible to write an in-game editor for the game when it is in memory regardless of the file format.

Personally I haven't got a clue how you would exactly do it but, if you really want something like this, work it out. Asking the developers to spoon-feed you something that they don't want to give is completely pointless.

Rant point #2: On the other hand, if this thing had a proper server-arbitrated architecture and security model, it would be perfectly possible to do a legitimate in-game editor for "AI" games only. But no, we're still living in the 1980s ...

As much as access to the game data would be useful for all players (PBEM and vs AI alike), it was been sacrificed to the sacred cow of PBEM security. As the developers have long since moved on to other things, the players left with the choice of either playing the game with the current, poor user interface and bugs, or, taking a lead from the devlopers, moving on. I know which I'm deciding to do. [;)]

I know which I'm deciding to do.

Certainly a loss to the rest of us. Remember, if you ever want to try a pbem, I'm up first [:D]. btw, got shattered sword for xmas, interesting read .....
