Who shot down the most 4mot bombers ? (should be easy...)

Do you want to know what results he reached ?
My informations are... he landed his jet, the typical bombing raid after that injured him by schrapnels...
Or do you want to know what was his last fight he got injured ? I am a little bit irritated...

About the Me323... yes, i thought about it. But the cal50 irritated me (sure, 13mm is the same,but...)

lots of books and what not just claim the 13 mm as a 50 cal, but it really wasn't, but it was as close to the US 50 that the GE had and used

for the bomb size, yes I have never seen any reports on that monster either, I just happened to be flipping though some pages waiting for a game turn to end (old Dos game, runs real slow) and the number jumped out at me, had to go back and read the whole thing again to be sure I seen it right

had to double check a few times to be sure they "meant" bomb and not bomb load, they had to use a He 177 as a tug, and rockets to help on takeoff

(but did say a He 111 Z would of done the tug job as well)

for the german guy...do you mean about his kill per mission ratio ? That should be Lt. Günther Scheel, 71 kills in 70 missions... russia.

I want to know ' How did Galland's last combat flight end. What was he flying and who did it(That is, who caused him to be in the situation where he had to do what he did)?'

My sources do not mention him getting hit by bomb shrapnel, although that may have been the case after the flight had ended (I have no information on that, although it is possible from what I do know).

You have the right date, and unit (JV44), and aircraft (Me262), but not the rest yet.

Galland was shot down by a P47 piloted by a capt James Finnegan. the shrapnel in his knee was from 50 cals shredding his cockpit. The two later met on better terms in 1979

On the morning of 26th April, Galland took off at 11:00 leading a flight of 6 Me262 from JV44 base at Munich (Riem) (I have flown into there several times, before they moved the airport). One jet aborted with engine trouble, the rest intercepted a formation of B26's on the way to Schrobenhausen. At c12:00 Galland led the attack from the rear. He forgot to arm his R4M, but shot down a B26 with cannon. He severely damaged a second. He then pulled up and left.

Lt Finnegan in his P47 caught sight of 2 Me262 (Galland and his wingman) 'come out of nowhere and in the flick of an eye , literally blow up two bombers'. One of the 262's flew beneath him, and he half rolled and pulled to dive down onto the jet. He got off 2 quick bursts but didn't see any effect. However, when he stopped firing, and dropped his nose a little to get a better view, he thought he saw bits coming off one cowling, and smoke from one wing. He attempted to close again, but the jet disappeared into clouds. He claimed 1 damaged.

Galland took hits from 'a hail of fire'. He was hit on the right knee, the instrument panel was hit, and also both engines. He struggled to keep the aircraft flying. In what must have been a good feat of flying he managed to coax the aircraft back home, but found his field under attack on arrival. Having no choice, he cut the fuel, and bellied in. He pulled himself out, and was rescued by ground crew.

My book (ref above) says that Henry Sakaida (US Historian) linked the 2 stories and solved who downed Galland. As I said, he bellied in to an airfield under attack - he might have been wounded again then.

by most nations rules, then, nobody shot him down, he bellied into his field that does not count as a kill, in fact most nations wouldn't rule it as a plane shot down either

which as you say, putting the stories together, I think he was brought down and maybe wounded, but it was the bomb blast that put him into the hosp and out of the war

No challenge to that. However it was a mission kill, and a candidate for a destroyed a/c.

Major Erich Rudorffer - Nov 13th 1943. 13 Russians (no info in my books on what/where).

He was a bit of a quick kill specialist, and spent a lot of his time on the western front. He on several occasions shot down 5+ in a single mission - and not always vs Russians. IIRC he did it once or twice in Tunisia?

Always had an interest in this guy, he must have been an amazing shot! Were there any other pilots who multple killed as often as he did? In fact, has anyone actually counted up his 5+ kill days - I must trawl the web and do it...
