Why do every (former) British colony need to have their own football rules?

No wonder the Empire crumbled

Actually why ??? do we drive on the left ... most countries do drive on the right .. except italy and greece where both sides are fair game ( i've driven in both ! )

Well...for what concerns Italy it really depends where you are driving!

The more you move southwards, the more you will suffer from road-anarchy. I myself refuse to take the car if i have to pass the Rubicon[:D]

It was Rome-Naples ! .. well below the rubicon line

AND Greece was the island of Kos , not that many cars so playing dogem was an occasional sport.

and in an affort not to be too stereotypical London can be a wild ride at times too. OK we do tend to stick to the left but traffic lights are somehow optional if your in sight of the thames ! [;)]

bah!

American football isn't sport - it is a show...

i also like Aussie football[:D]

Once you've stepped onto a field and been hit by one of the 6'2" 270lb "showmen" running a 4.2 second 40, you'll understand - of course, not until after you've regained consciousness in the hospital. [:D]

Supposedly people drove on the left in historic (i.e. Roman) times because when driving horses (horses pleural - wagons, chariots, etc.), you kept the reins in your right hand and the whip in your left hand. If you drove on the right, that meant you were more likely to hit the oncoming drivers with your whip since you were passing whip hand to whip hand (actually, this is supposed to be a fairly recent discovery).

After the Romans had a few instances of road rage (yes, there were recorded instances of this), they decided driving on the left would be a good idea.

Now, why people switched to the RIGHT side of the road is a mystery to me...

Thought the right side of the road custom was derived from jousting and continued on as a sort of rules of the road for horse travel. It doesn't explain England, but then again, what does?

Actually driving on the right was forced in Europe (forced by force:) ) by Napoleon.

would make sense (sort of) - but why did he do it? Was there anarchy on the roads of Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire, so he just made an arbitrary decision? And why did the US go to the right? Just to be contrary to Great Britain???

i would guess force of custom. Supposedly, Britain retained its Roman culture for quite a while even after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Also, some of the roads were engineered to be driven on the left, and it would take a bit of effort to change them.
