There is another Claude group that comes out like within 60 days if that's any indicator.

I use Claudes to train up my disbanded naval fighter groups. (Same with Nates for my disbanded army fighter groups.) After they are trained, I switch them to the frontline fighters. You start out with well over 300 Claudes (and over 900 Nates). Why waste them. They were paid for before the game began so why waste frontline fighters you are producing on your half-trained dimwits? If one of them crashes and burns in one of these, just accept replacements to get a replacement aircraft and grab another pilot.

No my point was that if there's still a Claude reinforcement to come, then that probably means that Claude factory will convert on it's own, therefore saving supply to let it ride for a while. Naturally, you can always halt the production of it it beforehand and save the extra Claudes being made to boot.

Ahh, I understand. I don't know that the Claude factory will auto-upgrade. Assuming it does, then you can wait. You'll save a few thousand supply. But, that's a factory that's out of service for the first month of the game. If you want more Zeros right away, then it's critical to get those factories cranking them out as soon as possible. If not, the by all means, let the factory sit.

Yeah, everybody makes their cuts and expansions, and I'm afraid the draw of a freebie there sounds like one of my semi-cuts. I have no intention whatsoever of getting 200 zero factory points. I'll choose a few odds and ends like some Sonia, Nate, or Hickory factories and get them up to around 140 within the first week (if the factories would retool that quickly).

BTW, after doing about 25 restarts due to the PH attack coming out so badly so much of the time, I thought i found one I liked but unfortunately after going through resetting verything the second turn, I discovered that some of my engine re-organizing would cost me at least 10,000 supply that was unintended, so I restarted. In this particular restart it was one fo the better PH attacks I had ever seen. The Maryland sank on turn one, and there were approximately 39 torps that went into ships! Perhaps most amazing of all was the fact that I only had 3 Zeroes destroyed and 3 damaged. The other losses were pretty light too. I believe the Enterprise, she will be a sinking if the AI does what it normally does. I run almost the entireity of my navy on cruise speed at all times, even KB in the case of day two. Enterprise routinely tries to intercept me and I'm ready for it. I run so much of my navy on cruise speed because it's a major effort on my part to save fuel. Only in dire emergencies will I use mission or full speed (turn two I'm rushing another transport TF to Wake, in order to take it. The first landing won't survive the counter-attacks unless I get something else there, and then it's mine.

depends on your playing style and progress you've made in opening months.

If you capture resources and oil intact (or almost intact) then you will have enough supply for that. And maybe even more.

But be careful, you have to choose what is most important to you. In general this is how i rate it.

1. nakajima engines
2. increasing Zero production
3. arnament production
4. supply for building forts/AFs (sooner or latter you have to defend captured bases)
5. repair yards

I found this old thread, and it looks like its my problem. I've been playing the campaign as the Allies versus the AI, and it wa becoming clear I had the upper hand. So, on 1/1/43, I flipped the game and started playing Japan.

The first thing I noticed was I was seriously short of any aircraft using a Nakajima engine. I looked at the production numbers, and according to them, I was ok - I was producing 920 Nakajima engines, and needed some 800-odd. But, I had 0 in stock. So I (cautiously) bumped up Nakajima production, and now, 3 weeks later, I actually have a stock of 2 engines.

But that doesn't appear to be really solving my biggest problem. I need Zeroes - any flavor - I'm not fussy. And I'm just not getting them. It might be a timing issue - the 3a model has just come out, and the factories appear to have converted. At least that's the only Zero currently being produced. But meanwhile, I have all these groups of 2 and 3 model Zeroes, and they have like 3-4 aircraft in them. And I'm not getting production of 3a's. Over a 3-week period, I've built up exactly 4 3a-model Zeroes. Not even close to 27 or 36 needed to convert a datai.

Am I missing something? Or is this the way of life of Japanese production? For a while, I thought it might be an HI issue, but now I don't think so - as I'm getting exactly the number of Betties that I would expect (daily rate = total factories / 30).

Thanks,
sanch

Try halting production of all other types of A/C that use Nakajima engines for a couple of turns to see what you get.

If your merchant losses have nee low is it better to convert them to Naval and is that cheaper than expanding Naval ?
What about all those AR , MLE those use Merchant points right ?

Is it good to have as many engines in pools as possible - these I assume cannot be destroyed ??

It is a little less expensive to convert Merchant to Naval than to expand naval; expanding costs 100 supply and 1HI per factory (IIRC). Either way you still have to repair.

Correct, engines in the pool cannot be destroyed. Just be sure they are the right engines.[;)]

All merchant conversions use Merchant points.

CVE's use merchant points too, not that Japan has a whole lot of them.

The best thing to store up a lot of is HI points. I don't mean factories. I mean points in the pool. They may be all the production you have if  the war goes on long enough. Engines can only be used as engines. HI can be turned into just about anything.

You might want to try the WITPutility. It will give you detailed stats on how many engines available, how many are actually being produced and how many you are using. There is a link to it on the forum, if you search through the old threads.

Also, is it possible that you are using more Nakajimas than you think? Maybe counting a 2-engine plane as a 1-engine? Or maybe missed another type that needs Naks?
