I don't think it's gonna get to the point where the Allied war machine is going to stomp all over him, the game will end before that, I think. Booting him out of Aus might be enough.

we took out BB Hyuga today and our bombers account for a heavy cruiser as one of our Easter eggs penetrates the cruiser's deck armor and ignites a magazin... BOOOOM! It is getting costly for him... again, I got no clue why he sailed past Melbourne...

Just to say critical hits with Ship penatrating bombs does happen on occasion. [;)] Just to comment, I understand in 1945 the Yamamoto took 2 hours of bombs before torp planes finally sunk her. ? That is what I understand. So in 1942 a raid is going to do damage but I suspect it takes a critical hit to do one in ..

This period of time is tough on the Allies in terms of sinking heavy ships because the torps have a 50% dud rate, and the planes are not very effective especally in range department. Yet, your AAR is showing that numbers of attacks using bombs eventually finds their mark and ships find Davy Jones' locker ..[;)]

I agree with EUbanana that the day will come when the turn is not in the email box [;)]

then a single freighter is engaged, as you can see below, it was about to unload... the ship tried to unload at a NON BASE hex, trying to block the road between Geraldton and Perth... I raised the issue when he landed South of Port Augusta at a non base hex but he obviously doesn't seem to care or why else would he do it again just a week later? I can asure you while I hate all these tactics of trying to exploit everything that isn't dealt with a hr I will pay it back with the full might of the Allied war machine... wonna go with such tactics? I can do the same... means I don't have to prep my units a hundred days when I will land 150.000 troops somewhere on an island that is big enough that I don't have to land directly at the base... I bet I will then be asked not to do it... when you have been around for years you should just refuse from doing all those things that are constantly being discussed on the forum as being gamey or not... in this case he didn't gain anything as the ship is sunk with all troops aboard...

It might be just game engine doing this. Once I've seen even AI unloading non-base hex, probably because transport fled from a surface threat, ended up in a coastal hex and unloading started... Sometimes strange things can happen.

then it was time for my carriers launching their strikes and the first wave of 41 bombers and their escorts attack CA Atago and DD Arashio with the result of CA Atago being done for sure... as you can see my carriers took position NW of Perth to keep distance to the IJN carrier group that is about to move in, still moving at mission speed so no real danger but if we would stay another turn a full speed move would bring them into range of my carriers... I have decided it is time to leave the scene with my carrier group and while a mission speed movement would be sufficient to stay out of range of the IJN carriers for sure I've ordered one day at full speed... as we are leaving the area I have ordered the torpedo bombers to carry torps as I don't expect to encounter any enemy BB... as to USN torp bombers, I think they are better with bombs anyway as they just suck carrying torps, no matter if TBD or TBF... I can't believe the enemy still keeps his heavy cruisers in the area...

Some good luck on Suzuya... respect falling for your opponent though, jeez. And people wonder why there are so many arguments on these forums between Axis fanboys and everybody else - people getting sore after having to deal with stuff like this is why.

I don't think it's gonna get to the point where the Allied war machine is going to stomp all over him, the game will end before that, I think. Booting him out of Aus might be enough.

We'll soon find out, if theres no hint whatsoever of any evacuation if you master him in Australia, "not a step back comrades!", I can't see it going the long distance.

what happens around Australia at the moment is one good reason why I never panicked or really worried when I gave up all the empty ground which he took very systematically and in fast order... I may sound like a dork but it is what I said earlier, it looks impressive on the strategic map but all that happened was losing empty ground... now the battle for Australia is long not over and I know bluebook is experienced enough to hurt me too if he gets the opportunity to do so but as it stands now, the Australian adventure has cost him so much already I can't see it being a success... and also here, he only took empty ground and there is just nothing you can do about it, you can't heavily garisson all of Australia, you just have to defend the small important areas and this is what we do...

I hope and think that bluebook is a taker and even though we do have/had severe differences in what we think should be done or not (aka gamey) I think he will go for the long run, otherwise the game might have stopped already... after having so many long time WITP PBEMs I started with Rainer79 our AE campaign which also reached 45 while the one against mortar was abandoned by me as it just didn't make sense and the one against 1eyedjacks is done too as the IJN failed miserably at Hawaii and 1eyedjacks got some real life issues which are more important than a computer game anyway...

as it stands now, I am playing with the asumption that this game will go all the way until the later stages...

Just to say critical hits with Ship penatrating bombs does happen on occasion. [;)] Just to comment, I understand in 1945 the Yamamoto took 2 hours of bombs before torp planes finally sunk her. ? That is what I understand. So in 1942 a raid is going to do damage but I suspect it takes a critical hit to do one in ..

This period of time is tough on the Allies in terms of sinking heavy ships because the torps have a 50% dud rate, and the planes are not very effective especally in range department. Yet, your AAR is showing that numbers of attacks using bombs eventually finds their mark and ships find Davy Jones' locker ..[;)]

I agree with EUbanana that the day will come when the turn is not in the email box [;)]

yeah it takes penetrating hits to do damage and critical hits to sink a big ship with only a small number of bombs, but even if you don't sink a ship, imagine how a BB would look like after a dozen 1000lb bombs plaster everything above the deck armor...

no matter the time, we can't really rely on USN aerial torps, the British are better but there aren't that many RN CV around... everything smaller than an IJN BB can and will be sunk with torps (no matter if 500 or 1000lb), it just takes a lot of them and the IJN BB will either be facing my subs, battleships or will end up in front of my few torpedo bomber squadrons...

I sure hope the game not to end sooner than a hopeless Japanese strategic situation (or an Allied one [;)])

Well... I think the true mark of the JFB is knowing when to quit. I know in my AAR game vs Stephen Pearce he evacuated Bengal to my own surprise when things started going south. I think it takes a certain amount of fortitude to know that it's time to cut your losses, and quite possibly begin the Long Retreat as you lose strategic initiative maybe permanently.

Bluebook has been very on the ball up till now, and it's not decided yet anyway I think. He can take some losses in '42. If he pulls out at some point then I'll be dead impressed and consider him a true master at this game.

I raised the issue when he landed South of Port Augusta at a non base hex but he obviously doesn't seem to care or why else would he do it again just a week later? I can asure you while I hate all these tactics of trying to exploit everything that isn't dealt with a hr I will pay it back with the full might of the Allied war machine... wonna go with such tactics? I can do the same... means I don't have to prep my units a hundred days when I will land 150.000 troops somewhere on an island that is big enough that I don't have to land directly at the base... I bet I will then be asked not to do it... when you have been around for years you should just refuse from doing all those things that are constantly being discussed on the forum as being gamey or not... in this case he didn't gain anything as the ship is sunk with all troops aboard...

It might be just game engine doing this. Once I've seen even AI unloading non-base hex, probably because transport fled from a surface threat, ended up in a coastal hex and unloading started... Sometimes strange things can happen.

yeah Puhis, you might be correct and I might be too suspicious... but the location where the freigther tried to unload really points toward what I was thinking... anyway, my opponent and me totally disagree on non base hex invasions and there is no hr on it, so other than complaining and doing the same if it suits me I can't do anything in the end than accept it

it definitely isn't decided yet and while the AAR is behind the game, we are far from having a decision in the game where it is at the moment. Like I've said, I know bluebook is skilled enough to hurt me if he gets the chance and I don't want to think about a situation when all my carriers go down for no or only minimal damage on the enemy carriers, this would completely reverse the overal current situation. Absolutely agree, a good player should realize when to consolidate his positions.

Is he doing anything in Burma? With the commitment to Oz, I can't imagine he has made much progress there if any.

Whacking all those merchant ships will really put a bind in not only any evacutation plan but also keeping the troops supplied not to meantion moving resources and stuff around later in the game.

It's been a fun couple of turns! Congratulations -- and it looks like the Marauders are good for something after all.

His attack with two divisions and a mixed infantry brigade plus at Geraldton came off with 350 AV. Those units have to be pretty well depleted. The big question is what kind of support troops went into the drink. At this point of the game, engineers and aviation support for Japan are very scarce. He could end up woefully short of support for a fight in OZ.

But as said, he does have his carriers and some significant gains. If he keeps his cool, this is a serious setback, not a disaster.

witpqs is right in that you really should of HR non base invasions with both sea and para units from the beginning. There are too many players who find it acceptable to assume that any opponent will feel the same as you. You might just tell him that if he wants to see your bombers above 7k then he should agree to trade off on that. Or just say nothing as in the end it will benefit you.

we had those two vessels moving South after Brisbane was lost, now the pityful ships run into these two cruisers... as you can see, again only two DD as escorts... anyone having an explanation why he seems so desperate for escorts? I never had any problem finding destroyer escorts for my heavy cruisers, battleships or carriers... at the beginning of the war, it seems to be harder for the Allied to find enough escorts but the IJN should be able to escort their bigger ships... I was surprised to see the enemy cruisers going this way along the coast, he still doesn't seem to care about my air attacks and doesn't even try to get his ships out of harms way... more about that later...

while those torpedo biplanes may have been a surprise for him it's beyond me why he moves along my coast when he knows my Marauders are on nav attack and those have already hit several of his cruisers sinking one after a magazine detonated... above's map clearly shows that the losses around Melbourne/Sydney would be well avoidable... first his CA and BB TF moved South East all on their own instead of all together, then he passed the Bass Strait South of Melbourne (where he lost BB Hyuga) instead of going South around Tasmania and then he moves his cruisers NE along the coast after they passed Bass Strait to have one sunk by Marauders with several more being hit and now Mogami and Mikuma end up two hexes East of Sydney where my torpedo bombers were waiting for them... now it would have been easy to stay out of their range but to top it off, the enemy carrier group with Akagi and Kaga is also in the area but isn't covering the enemy ships which gives my pityful airforce a great chance to strike at the enemy shipping... to me, all losses in the Melbourne/Sydney area were 100% avoidable...

our carriers left the ship cemetery around Perth as the enemy carriers are closing in and we've got a comfortable distance between our carriers and the enemy ones as they are closing in on Albany this turn...

I was asked not to use picket ships! [:D] You may remember me bitching about the use of picket ships by the IJN earlier in the game but I just went with what is good for the goose... while the enemy used single PB (a converted xAKL) as pickets we did the same with a couple of xAKL and I was told it would not be ok to do it with xAKL... it's fun how quickly behaviour that is ok for someone as long as he's doing it can turn into not ok when the enemy is doing it...

I replied that this wasn't a picket anyway and due to the fact that he used the amphib bonus to such an extend that he took all of the empty map I can't run around normal sized convoys to be picked off within his blockade... well I could run big convoys but I am not silly enough to do so and that will mean he will probably run into an endless number of single ship TF because as soon as I spot enemy ships I scatter my two and three ship convoys I use to run around...

so in fact, the over the top I take every empty flag and dot on the map operation doesn't do him any good because the chance that he catches a bigger convoy is near nil...

damn it, 19 of my torp bombers attack with bombs, the air HQ only had 50 torps available... my bad, should have increased it to 100 torps but didn't think of the need to do so as I didn't even expect my ancient torp bombers to have targets that close to Sydney anyway... amazing that Mikuma isn't even showing up as damaged after she took two torps, the hits must have been FOW... Mogami is sunk though and a single bomb damages a destroyer...
