California is the nation's most populous state at 40 million.

It's done remarkably well throughout this crisis and is projected to continue doing so.

Since the virus reached its shores long ago, among the earliest places in the US, this is particularly surprising. California might've done an exceptional job of quarantining those early cases, but the level of traffic in and out, and the amount of time the virus has had to do its work, makes the outcome here remarkable.

Cap Mandrake is a resident physician there too. That can't hurt. [:)]

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti is trying to build up herd immunity by putting all the homeless in rec centers so they all get COVID-19. Or maybe he is trying to "end homelessness" WITH a virus.

Oh wait, I forgot "homeless" is demeaning. The new term is "unsheltered". Meanwhile city parks are closed down so kids can't use the jungle gym but the the restrooms are open at night for the "unsheltered"

"COVID-19 — the illness caused by the novel coronavirus spreading across the globe — is now the No. 1 cause of death in the US, where it is killing more people every day than heart disease or cancer, according to a report.

A new graph published this week by Dr. Maria Danilychev, a San Diego-based physician, showed the disease causes 1,970 deaths across the country per day, according to Newsweek.

Meanwhile, the graph shows that 1,774 deaths per day are caused by heart disease and 1,641 to cancer, the mag reported.

Only last week, COVID-19 was the third-leading cause of death, averaging about 748 deaths per day, taking the place of accidents, according to Danilychev’s previous report."

Cap, building from the point you make, I suppose that early on, models were challenging to create. The initial outbreak in Seattle and Calif must've caught them with little data to work with. With so much information available now, from so many sources, the best models should be more reliable.

There are what look to be Tennessee Warblers or Vireos building a nest in a Red Oak near my porch.
Their craftsmanship is outstanding. The nest looks like part of the tree. It is adobe style.

Cardinals just throw a few twigs on a branch.

SARS-1, Wuhan-1 and 3 of the 4 known endemic Coronaviruses are of bat origin.

I have an idea. Why don't we stop crawling around in Chinese caves collecting bats? Do we really NEED to discover any more bat coronaviruses from animals that shit upside down? After all, what scientific purpose is gained at this point? The Horseshoe Bat is the likely reservoir source of both SARS-1 and Wuhan-1. By some evolutionary accident we seem to share viral attachment sites with the Horsesehoe Bat.

I say we send in volunteers in hazmat suits and flamethrowers and BBQ the damn things. After all, we have been deliberately killing the Anopheles mosquito for 100 years and Aides aegyptica for 50 years.

Hey, you, Tennessee! There aint such a thing as a Tennessee vireo. And the Tennessee warbler doesn't breed south of Canada (except at a few edges).

There are a zillion species of warbler and a half-dozen vireos you might be looking at. Some likelies would be: yellow-throated vireo, red-eyed vireo, blue-headed vireo; pine warbler; yellow-throated warbler.

In the same breath the founder of World Central Kitchen announced he was shutting his famous restaurants in response to the coronavirus pandemic, he said he's transforming several of them into community kitchens to feed out-of-work families and struggling workers, according to the Good News Network.

I showed them my Peterson's guide.

Just "Vireos".

There is no bright color on them. Grey/white. Cannot see eye nor throat bars.
