these are really low numbers; at least compared to a "real" carrier, even Wasp's durability looks decent compared to the 30s at which most enemy ships are at; they won't handle more than a torpedo or a few bombs

it seems to me I have a chance of possibly killing most,of the mini KB, assuming he doesn't run away next turn

Key events:
- Japanese SCTF tried to catch the carriers, but failed

- I had one cruiser TF set on patrol trying to intercept the enemy SCTF, I had CVE Long Island TF as CAP support following it. This TF was intercepted by LBAs from Ternate/ Manado and managed to put several bombs on the escort carrier

- Allied carriers tried to hit the active Japanese carrier TF, but fail to score any hit; coordination was horrible

- Allied carriers succeeded in sinking the cripple Japanese carriers; both Ryujo and Shoho got swarmed and torpedoed

- There were no enemy strikes against my carrier TF, no strike at all from the active Japanese carriers


For me it is time to go home for rearm, refuel and prepare for the second wave coming very soon. I hope to dodge this big Japanese TF, not sure if it will be possible as there is really only one route to take

Very nicely done Jorge! Good plan, excellent prep, and a little good luck during execution didn't hurt either! Dice roll gods were in your favor when his planes attacked - great flak results from your ships too!

Turned out to be another crushing IJN defeat!

What I'm scratching my head on is why is land based torpedo planes were attacking with bombs? Range or lack of torpedo capable HQs? That definitely gave you a nice edge!

You should be pretty close to getting Balikpappan's oil under B-17/B-24 threat, right? I'm assuming that's your general direction here, or are you bypassing and aiming towards the PI via the Moluccas?

The reason for bombs instead of torpedoes is simply lack of preparedness. he was surprised on the eastern DEI, underdeveloped bases to say the least

so no air HQs means no torpedoes, first day he dropped 60kgs bombs which might be due to low supply

in the original plan, wave1 was going to consist of 2 phases:
First wave:
- first, easy phase was completed; landings at Kaimana, Sorong, Babo Boela: I had to stop unloading after a day (or less than a day), but for all purposes, this was achieved; those troop transports and supplies will return once the battle ends, things get settled

- second, difficult phase was cancelled; landings on Sidate, Manado and Ternate: my idea was that if he let initial phase go unopposed; if the landings went well and there was minimal reaction, I would then go for Ternate, Sidate and Manado and force some fighting. Obviously the carrier battle and that nasty SCTF changed things. So this is still an objective, but on hold

Second wave:
- Ambon; I plan to get Ambon very soon, as I don't like the idea of a level 4 base so close; he will eventually repair the craters

- Celebes: I want the entire island, or at least north an south based; I want a level 9 airbase at Watampone

From there, I don't know what is next; definitively Balikpapan and Tarakan had to burn; that is a given, but I don't know yet if I will push for Borneo or PH expansion, or even maybe Java to grab a shipyard

a quiet turn, I ended up sending the carriers to the South West; TF ended very close to Ternate, and it was attacked by LBAs. The attack was a total failure and Japan lost another batch of Zeroes and Betties

3 of 4 cruiser TF reacted to something, either the leftover DDs or the enemy SCTF, but found nothing. Enemy carriers at Davao. Halsey and friends will keep going south for rearming and refueling

I totally miscalculate the serious fuel consumption of running ~300 ships, Not a big concern, as I have oilers on forward bases, but Townsville is out of fuel [:(] and Sydney and Brisbane don't want to share
Will take some time to rebuild reserves

a few quiet turns after the battle; fleets were rearmed, refueled, carrier pilots and aircraft replenished.
supply and 2nd line troops unloading without delays on Babo, Boela, Kaimana and Sorong; this last base was attacked by LBAs, but a combination of LRCAP and luck made them fail

In the meantime, Japan has also moved some TFs, which this turn reached Kendari; I would guess it is either a fast transport or amphibious or a combination of both to unload an air HQ and supplies.
One of the TFs was spotted by a submarine, and it reported:

really hard to understand what happened this turn; in what reminded me of those Banzai charges; the Japanese move TFs, including loaded Amphibious TFs into the direct path of happily amused Allied carriers

If you see the map I posted last turn, there was a pretty high level of DL, moreover, the fact there was CAP over the fleet (from that small base NW of Ambon), tells me this was not a click mistake
Maybe he thought my sorties were depleted? he might have discounted the possibility of AE/ AKE rearming and the fact I can replace squadrons at will since my main bases are at Townsville, Darwin and Moresby... and of course I have plenty of orphaned squadrons from carrier loses

In any case, serious damaged to the Japanese for very little losses, other than a high expenditure of torpedoes
Next turn this will get even more interesting as the SCTFs will have a chance to perform

There were too many battles, too many strikes, so it will take me some time to gather all data.
suffice to say: heavy losses in ships and planes for Japan. heavy losses in planes for the Allies.. I think I would run out of Dauntless soon at this rate

While I collect it, here is how the map looked after the 2nd day of battle

Surface combat, Night phase:
- Japanese amphibious TF proceeded to Ambon, with heavy cover

- one of these heavy cover TF, lets call it TF Kumano, encountered cruiser TF "Friedell", this 1st battle was a clear victory for Japan, as they had minimal damage vs 2 DDs sunk

- 2nd battle: another Japanese victory, cruiser TF "Ching Lee" vs TF Ashigara, 1 DD sunk, 1 cruiser torpedoed vs 1 Japanese DD damaged

- 3rd battle: after dealing with the cruisers, Ching Lee went for the amphibious TF. Escorts did a good job in defending the transports, and got killed instead

- 4th battle: fresh TF "Lockwood", with 3 standard battleships, wrecked havoc on the amphibious TF.. lots of troops ended up swimming
