I don't mean to second-guess Dude--well, not too much!--but the carriers lost around NZ and perhaps the 100,000 troops could have been usedin Malaysia, Singapore and India. The carrier strike force could have covered a lot of operations in the Bay of Bengal while the army finished off the Brits. With your success in China, that would make it difficult for the allies in Burma/Bangladesh/India and you could perhaps have replicated your major land success.

All those Allied units in New Zealand would also be free for action elsewhere. They could be sent to India as well.

My guess is that Dude got a bit lucky at Pearl Harbour when he lost zero carriers (I think Mogami lost 4 when he tried to take it).

Luck? Actually the other way around. I now know that zero carriers can be lost taking Pearl Harbor. Just take the smaller Hawaiian islands with troops and build up the airfields. No reason at all to risk any carriers getting in range of Pearl Harbor. What is the point of moving carriers close to Pearl Harbor after the intial attack?

However, that luck ran out in NZ. That level of Japanese carrier loss is probably about right for such aggressive Japanese operations in the face of LBA and allied carriers. The British are weaker, so the losses might not be as substantial -- and the gains from Burma and India are a whole lot more than from NZ. You could secure one side of the map!

If anyone wants detailed instructions on how to take New Zealand, I'll give them to you. There are two tactics. Come at the place directly by landing on the north island or indirectly by landing on the south island.

If you go north, you need to go in very early with one division and one brigade or wait for three divisions if the Allies get the NZ division before you arrive. Post two or three carriers on each side of the islands. Land two hex behind Wellington or Auckland to avoid the coastal guns. Now you have won the battle.

If you go south, you'll not need more than one division for the initial landing. Land at Christchurch. Build up the airfield and port. Destroy Wellington. Land a couple of divisions and win the battle.
