Condolences, must be some sort of affliction of the northern tribes . . . driving in the ice and snow around here has its own rewards and dangers. [;)]

Snow tires aren't used that often in most of the USA, ever since radial tires took over. As a matter of fact, there aren't that many states that they are legal in , and then only for a few months a year. Those studs really tear up the road. Yet another reason why northern and rust belt states generally are constantly repair roads (that and "frost heaves"). And generally they work best on rear wheel drive vehicles. Front wheel drive? Not so much....[8|]

Probably not as well as you do in America's ice box. You get lots of practice driving in the stuff. Lots of practice![:D]

Studded snow tires are as you've stated-a rare find. Most "Snow tires" used on passenger vehicles these days are somewhat softer rubber with much deeper grooves for snow to pack into but yet restrict hydroplaning on 'pushed' snow. They look a lot like normal tires.

They wear rather poorly though. You're lucky to get 30,000 miles out of a pair. When you're using them for 5 months out of the year...[8|]

Probably for the best when you think about it.
