A little research will demonstrate that the Core have lost a few colonies. They are at war only with the Char Dilba and the Pindare Minor Territoy- best guess is that they have lost colonies to the Char Dilba.

STRATCOM theorizes that the Phaser- and Tachyon Devastator-armed Naxx ships outgun the Rail Gun-armed Core ships unless vastly outnumbered.

This shouldn't be, but if it is I'll be intrigued. The numbers do not add up with the devastators weaker range and damage. The end game planet busting railgun is a beast. Bypassing shields should make ships retreat, unless the repairs keep up.

Question for you: Does a rail gun with bombard capability partially bypass a planets shielding like it does to ships?

While I'm neither STRATCOM nor Twigster, as far as I can tell, bombardment-capable railguns cannot bypass planetary shields. To test this, I set up a test game with max-tech Ackdarians and created a size-1800 design with 70 Massive Railguns, spawned a few in near an independent colony, added a Planetary Shield Generator to the colony, and ordered my ships to attack. The attack orders cleared almost as soon as I issued them and the ships never bothered firing on the colony. Ships with different bombardment weapons exhibit the same behavior.

Thanks Aeson.

Would have made an interesting game if planetary shields could have been vulnerable by a weapon.

Aeson is of course correct in answering "no" to your question Retreat. I have never seen that occur. As far as Tachyon Devastators/Phasers vs. Railguns on ships, all I can say is that for some yet to be determined reason the Naxx ships seem to be besting the Core ships.

Something else I'd like to comment on: the "1 AI superpower" theory. I have gone back and forth on this for many months... however, my current game has blown the theory out of the water for me.

I agree.

Having obtained the Core's operational map, here are some scenes that may shed some light on what is happening. Here we see an example of a defended Core planet, with large space port and defense base.

Looking deeper into Core-controlled space, we begin to find more Core battleships.

An operational view demonstrating the locations of Core fleets and individual ships. Interestingly, the Core at this point in history do not seem to favor very large fleets, nor fleets with many battleships. Hmm...

Here is Supernova FS19, recent site of a Char Dilba- Core clash that the Core seems to have won, at least for now...

Riddle me this: why would the Core fight over and then place a mining station in a supernova remnant?
