77th/B Division Wiped Out at Sapporo by attrition!!!
Japanese Unit(s) surrounded at Sapporo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Only one division needs rest tomorrow at Sapporo. In the narrows west of Hakodate our destroyers put down two SSX and fought off an air raid.

The recent strategic bombing targets are showing small increases in damage. Tomorrow the 2EB fly against Light Industry near Hokkaido. 1EB will strike Light Industry at Toyohara. The B-29 groups on Formosa will hit Heavy Industry and Light Industry at Shanghai. We want the besieged Imperials to be without bullet factories.

A whole mess of units upgraded to their new TOEs this turn, in accordance with toggling the upgrade switch in addition to the prior requirements. A nice little surprise is that the Soviet Command HQ at Vladivostok covered Hokkaido.

Rather than waiting for other bases to be developed, I've moved 7 full squadrons (15x planes each) of B-29-25 to Sapporo, with two 24x plane Corsair squadrons on close CAP (range 0). By the time stragglers catch up there will also be adequate air support on site (currently short). Sapporo airfield is size 7, but dedicated engineer units will be landing on Hokkaido over the next couple of days and will rail straight to Sapporo.

Sorry for being thick -- but what exactly does this mean? And how can you get any benefits from the USSR when they are supposedly still neutral?

The range is 2* their listed range so it could easily cover Hokkaido. I am guessing that the formula to calculate whether an HQ can participate in the attack does not include checking to make sure it is the same national origin and also that it is not 'neutral' as you put it.

So if he had it set for 'Sapporo' for example it should apply the HQ bonus.

Am I close?

OK that makes sense but it sure sounds like a bug if the Allies get any kind of support from the Soviets before their official entry into the war.

Not impossible to imagine - the Russians cooperated with the British to allow operation of Lancaster bombers from there to hit BB Tirpitz in Norway.
Sure they were reluctant, but the Allies could threaten to end their convoys of supply and equipment to Murmansk if the Russians did not cooperate.

I think similar pressure could have been exerted to get cooperation when needed in the Pacific theatre - as long as the Japanese were not aware it was happening.

I agree it is not ideal but it is in line with how the rest of the game works. The notion of a Command HQ being within a certain physical range to allow a TOE upgrade is artificial anyway, so I'm not offended or worried by a Soviet Command HQ filling the role.

While it's possible those destroyers are sortieing toward Hokkaido to raid shipping at ports, I think they are going to head east to intercept some troop convoys inbound to Hokkaido because some of those convoys have been spotted. Measures will be taken. There is also a new concentration of MTB types at Hirosaki/Aomori, so we will sortie the same ilk from Hakodate to do battle.

The strategic strikes against Hirosaki/Aomori achieved some Light Industry hits but did not fly against any other targets. Orders remain in place for tomorrow.

I'm in the middle of rearranging the sweeping fighter groups in the Okinawas. Due to stragglers repairing before moving it will be a few days. The notion of using P-38 groups to escort the B-29 groups (or B-24 groups) has not worked out terribly well, with only a few missions getting escorts. Accordingly, the P-38 groups are vacating Amami Oshima and P-47 groups will be based there. The P-51 groups, will their longer range, will be based at Tokunoshima and farther back as necessary.

The steamroller steams on in China.

And Ningpo is secured; zombies near Chengtu are getting nearer to ex-zombie status. From Chengchow our armoured units will move to capture the airfield at Kaifeng, which is size 8 and will anchor our air umbrella in the area. That brings up the fact that the Imperials holding Hankow are hampering our efforts to move air support forward along that axis of advance, but we should be able to begin reducing defenses there in somewhat over a week.

More Air raids on our DD ASW TF west of Hakodate, no hits.

Upgraded the first squadron to P-47N, at Hakodate. I think 460 mph will help make CAP there even more effective protecting nearby ships. ~3,000,000 supply on Hokkaido: I guess we can sustain operations for a while.

Air losses, higher today mostly due to naval strikes against our valiant ASW forces. We are short of fully trained USN fighter pilots, but you knew that.

China east. Almost 300,000 Imperial troops trapped in the greater Shanghai pocket. Shanghai itself will probably have more than 150,000 after Soochow is assaulted, and will be dealt with slowly. Hangchow has more than 110,000 troops, and will be assaulted after the 33,000 troops at Nanking are dispatched.
