Addu is the obvious next target for the Allies and with only 21st JNAF AF Unit based here it is ripe to fall. Reconn is making it apparent that nearly all, if not all, of the Allied CVs are present. Reports are showing a disturbing number of carrier aircraft present. KB is still at Truk and I have a feeling that if I send them post haste to southern India KB will be badly out of position for an Allied thrust somewhere in the Pacific. This turn saw reports of heavy radio traffic coming from Sydney and Auckland while PH has consistently shown reports of heavy radio traffic of late.
I do hope I’ve not thrown the initiative away by having KB sit tight.

If you have been wondering just what I plan to do now that the Todd has made a move I’ll see if I can gather some coherent thoughts together on my thinking.
Firstly, this Indian ocean move has great potential to bring my land army completely undone. Todd knows that I’ve committed many divisions plus artillery to the land campaign here. In the short term Addu Island will be lost along with Male Island. Preferable to have kept them but I never got my act into gear to be in a position to post properly defensive LCUs on this location.
I fully expect that the Allied LCUs based at Karachi and Hyderabad (Sindh) to make a move in support of the naval thrust. Just how much to leave here to make it difficult is something I’m uncertain of and if this front unravels then India will fold rather quickly I suspect. I intend finishing off the Allied forces in Rawalpindi although this will be difficult to achieve given time constraints and two mountain hexes into which they will escape. At the very best these units will be forced to fend for themselves in mountain terrain.
Of more serious concern is Mangalore. It is the only west coast port still held by the Allies and I’m currently in the slow process of having it encircled…. Thinking on this it is probably better to capture the base and force the defenders out into the open and deal with them from there rather than leaving an inviting base available for the Allied transports to bring more troops into.
My response to the Allied thrust will be to invade Ceylon. I have the air power available to cover a landing at Jaffna and then move on Trincomalee which appears to be guarded by a single unit. Colombo is likely to be a bastion but I think it is necessary to take this place now to guard the southern route into India. For now, I’ve relocated 1 air HQ to Cochin and have 35 Kate and 9 Betty available to deal with Allied forays into this area. Some more Betty are also on the way. At sea I cannot confront the Allied fleet (apart from sending in submarines) but should this fleet come close to land I hope to make it a difficult and costly proposition.
Also on the way (finally) is Japanese carriers. It took some time to be sure that the Allies had made a heavy carrier commitment to this move. In response I am sending Kaga, Junyo, Hiyo, Ryujo, Zuiho, Ryuho and Hosho to Madras from Truk. It will take time to get them there but Todd appears to be moving cautiously and this may work to my benefit. I already have 4 battleships and some cruisers and destroyers in theatre but I shall have to be very careful how I deploy them with such a strong enemy carrier presence.
As for Akagi, Shokaku, Zuikaku, Soryu and Hiryu. For a very brief time (and the first time in this game) I had all 6 of the big 6 Japanese carriers together in the same port. These 5 will remain in the Pacific. I fully expect that Operation SNAFU has more to it than this Indian Ocean overture. If I’m wrong, I shall have to blame Japanese wilful head in sand approach to Allied carriers in the Indian Ocean. If I’m right, I will have a strong force available to confront an Allied push in the Pacific region.
Finally, to keep things rolling in the Pacific, an operation has commenced to invade and ultimately capture Suva. KB will be keeping cover along with the 4 Kongos. So plenty of things on the boil to make sure that Todd isn’t yet dictating all of the action.
I expect that Todd and I will soon be locking horns in a naval manner somewhere on the board.

Attached is the latest position of the Allied carriers stalking around Ceylon. They have moved away from Addu and are placed in an interesting position. I’m at 6s and 7s guessing on their intention. Not to mention a serious case of how to best configure LBA depending on their direction of travel. A reinforcement and re supply of the forces based at Colombo is my expectation. My main concentration of LBA is at Cochin. Colombo has seen a reinforcement of fighters overnight so something is definitely going on. At the same time, I’m looking to make a landfall myself at Jaffna in a couple of turns. Things could get ugly here very quickly. I’m attempting to use my LBA as cover and I wonder how game Todd is to come close to LBA. Hopefully the current location of KB and lesser carriers is not known which should make him hesitant of pushing things too far… I’m hoping, at least, that this is a factor.

The below map shows some significant land force movement at Hyderabad (Sindh). It is a big force and will pack a big punch. I’m puzzled as to why it has gone off road though.
Todd offered the following comments with this turn…
OK, so with SNAFU revealed and in full swing I can start my next OP. Let's see a really good name for that would be, Murphy as in Murphy's Law. See Todd doesn't have to wait for overpowering strength to begin his chipping away at the evil empire of the setting sun. Todd does have to be extremely careful not to get caught by the IJN though.
He is chipping away but so far in places that I haven’t invested much in the way of forces able to protect. I really would like to catch up with his fleet but I’m still not sure if he has all his carriers in the Indian Theatre or does he still have a decent force ready to go in the Pacific.

It certainly does appear that this is a resupply and reinforce mission to Colombo. Whether Todd chances his luck against Cochin or Madras remains to be seen. I’m looking on it as an opportunity to whittle his fighters if he does.
Interestingly I’ve picked up a small carrier force sneaking past Addu. Recon reports little in the way of planes on board. I’ve thought on this and have come to the conclusion that this is most likely Lexington making a run to the ports on the board side near Karachi. There are a couple of subs handy which now have intercept orders to see if I can work out what this mystery is.

TF 121 encounters mine field at Addu.
(this is AP J. Franklin Bell off-loading supply – sadly no mines detonated – shame as she is obviously running this op on her own for the time being)
Calcutta is bombed – 1 G4M1 lost to flak, 5 casualties.
Srinagar is bombed – 3 airbase hits, 2 airbase supply hits and 13 runway hits.
Japanese bombard at Rawalpindi – A 11 casualties.

PHILIPPINES
81st PA Infantry Division at Cebu is bombed – 13 casualties.
Cebu USN Base Force at Cebu is bombed.
Repairs completed on E Sagi at Kobe, ship returned to service.
Allied Recon sighted over North Male.
Allied Aircraft sighted over Multan.
Allied Aircraft sighted over Hailar.
Allied Aircraft sighted over Seishin.
Allied Torpedo Bomber sighted over Jodphur.
Looks like North Male is the next place to fall. Absolutely nothing on this barren rock and all of about 9 supply left in the place. Still not sure about the reports of carriers with no attack planes – seems to be the same one I was tracking and now it appears to be covering a North Male invasion. Guess it wasn’t Lexington after all.
Todd provided an explanation for the botched Addu invastion - a classic case of faulty recon resulted in a bloody nose on Addu. I'll have a chat with the pilots who reported a vacant island. Looks like a case of FOW good fortune to me.
I’ve ordered a sweep from Cochin and the escorts carriers (Madras) on Colombo. Probably reckless but I’m hoping to catch out some of the carrier CAP and reduce them somewhat.

Message – Combined Fleet to Commanding Officer, Kido Butai.
On the bridge of Zuikaku Admiral Yamaguchi scanned the short message. Exhaled, looked up and past expectant eyes surreptitiously directed his way. The expectant ones can wait a little. I want to view the fleet before the order is issued. Zuikaku lay below him, Zeros on CAP rotation lazily warming up. Shokaku cruising ahead. How many found memories he held of the accomplishments of these two warships. Hiryu and Soryu, under overcast skies, cut through the placid waters of the Pacific off to port in line ahead. In the centre of the fleet Akagi. The cruise into the southern waters of the Pacific had been a welcome and slow tempo return to operational duty after time spent at Truk. During that time the carriers, excepting Akagi, had taken turns to refit in the Home Islands. This message would bring that feeling of slumber to an end.
Message all carriers that captains are to be present for a briefing and new orders 1000 hours.
1000 hours and the captains were all present having made the relatively calm crossing to Zuikaku.
Yamaguchi began without preamble. Combined Fleet reports that our scout submarines have located and are tracking a force warships made up of light cruisers, destroyer escorts and cruiser minelayers heading on a southwest bearing from Hawaii. The force is a couple of days out from Palmyra. We are in position to move east and intercept this force.
Admiral Yamamoto has ordered that we are to destroy this force. Force disposition has been left to me. We are also to continue with our primary objective to provide aerial cover for the Nadi invasion. Intelligence is confident that the bulk of the American carriers are currently committed to operations around southern India. This knowledge has allowed us to be more flexible and aggressive in the Pacific. Zuikaku, Shokaku and Hiryu will execute the plan to intercept and destroy this task force. Kongo and Hiei will accompany them.
By days end the rearrangement of 2 TFs had been completed and the big ships parted company. One group to provide cover to a long awaited invasion and the other to hunt prey. Yamaguchi felt good. It had been some months since the glory days of Indian Ocean hunting. Zuikaku and Shokaku were in fine mettle after the recent addition of radar and the bolstering of the AA complement. This time he would also have Hiryu – the hunting force had grown.

I think the loss of Mangalore in such a cheap way has hit Todd hard. Last turn he mentioned that Operation SNAFU had meet with limited success. I expect that he was referring to Lexington being put in the yard and 32nd Division having a hard time of capturing Addu. He also referred to his recon letting him down with his pilots reporting that Addu had no garrison and North Male having a garrison when the opposite was the case. This turn he confided that moral is very, very low and everything is on the verge of collapse (this was stated after making reference to India, Suva and China). I’m not convinced that the Allied position is that dire with ’43 a mere two months away and the USN still to be dented. I suspect Todd’s message does reflect his mindset at present and that he is reeling from almost 11 months of unabated Japanese success and his first major operation not quite coming up to the mark he had hoped for. I’m not convinced either that my position is as impregnable as Todd might think it is. I think that if he had of come at India far harder with his carriers he would have caused me a lot of grief. As it is his carriers must be looking at returning to a decent port to fix up wear and tear as they have been a sea for a while now and I’m about to launch an invasion into Ceylon and attempt to deal with the bastion that the Allies have at Colombo. Suva is a nice side show and hopefully I will get enough AV here to deal with it by the end of the year – I really want to pick up the victory points there now that we are so close to the beginning of 1943.

Yamaguchi was reluctant to make the decision but is it time for his 3 carriers to move northwards again. Their move to the east turned into a southern move bearing towards New Zealand after the scout subs had lost contact with the Allied surface TF. Yamaguchi had decided that some time sitting on the sea lanes heading towards southern New Zealand would reap a reward… so far nothing. Fuel was becoming an issue and the time had come to head north towards Akagi and Soryu and the waiting replenishment TFs. A shame, he thought, to waste all this fuel on a Southern Ocean excursion.
