Somewhere East of Luganville

I decided to gather all my chickens under the KB umbrella for this turn (getting BatDiv1 down into position), launch a raid at Luganville to recon and then decide if invasion here is plausable. I have 4 Naval units (60AV each) amphib loaded and ready to move South from Nauru Island.

Well, Mother Nature took command. Severe storms over my fleet and bad weather over Luganville combined to very little action this turn. A couple of 4Es stumbled thru the pea-soup clouds and rain only to get a few ventilation holes for their troubles. A couple of Kate scouts claimed to strike hapless DDs picketing Luganville.

Burma
First DA on Meiktila looks promising. Allied High Command continues to improve the airfields at Mandalay for me. I am grateful...[:D]

Planning Apr 08, 1942

Situation Luganville
I'm getting that itchy feeling I've been sitting in one place too long.
Last turn, even without stikes launching, I did get some good recon on Luganville.
13,120 Troops
139 Guns
250 AFVs

The troops I have on hand would not be enough to take this island.

So, I am thinking that Canton Island might be a great distractionary attack at this point.
But first, the rest of the chickens are ordered to head East while the KB breaks Southeast and lays some wood on Suva. I have gotten a couple of sightings of Allied fleets heading that direction when I was snugging up to Luganville. I am hoping they stopped there to refuel and I can catch a Heavy Cruiser or a couple of Oilers in port.

After that, KB is retiring toward Baker Island to join the rest of the Chickens to investigate Canton Island.

I am loading a 24 AvSup unit at Saipan to follow the invasion, and considering which air units to move to such a forward and exposed base.

Burma
Since I hold the Oosthaven/Merak straits - I don't think it is too cheezy to start moving naval units around Sumatra toward Tavoy/Moulmein/Rangoon. Currently 1 BB, 1 CL, 3DDs, 3DMS, 1E, 1PB, AS, 2AGs are there or rounding Sumatra. About 4 SSs are now based at Rangoon and out on patrol. AKE's are also on the way with a couple more DDs but haven't left Oosthaven yet.

In addition to the AKE's more AvSup units need to get over to this Front.

I think I will be setting some kind of record for lenght of time it takes to capture Singers, Palembang and Manila. (sigh).

At least I will have a very low bar to shoot for in my next campaign.

I have read a couple of comments, not from my opponent, that any large scale movement into the Indian Ocean/Bay of Bengal would be hindered as long as Singapore was held.

Singapore is still in British Hands. I've had Oosthaven/Merak for over a month now so I think that would give me a legit window to shuffle units toward Burma/Bay of Bengal and start sub ops in the Indian Ocean.

(Slow pace of conquest) I think that concentration of force and pace of ops are skills that must be mastered to do well in this game. Playing the shorter campaigns does give you some idea about setting up and fighting within a box, but this, the full campaign, is something else. I have tooled around a couple of months vs AI and didn't learn much compared to this adventure. But then against the AI, there was no 'urgency' or 'commitment' to keep the turns flowing like doing a turn a day pace maintained in this game.

Still scratching around those R&D numbers....

I am having some problems maintaining the full 500 engine bonus and I suspect there maybe a randomness also involved so 100% conpliance may or may not be achieveable.

So stepping back my calculations on the two air frames in question:
Ki-43-IIb with 5(x30) factories and a rough quess of 7.5pts R&D maintained from now to completion, I project that I will begin production on or about June 24th, 1942.
So far I have been averaging 8.09 pts per day. If I maintained an 8 pt average, the date comes closer to June 19, 1942.

A6M5c with 6(x30) factories and a rough guess of 9pts R&D maintained from now to completion, I project that I will beging production on or about Jan 16th, 1943.
So far I have been averaging 8.77 pts per day. If I maintaing an 8.75 average, the date slips to Jan 24th, 1943.

These numbers are still being impacted by trying to maintain full 500 bonus while still building airframes and some randomness on if they do burn an engine for the bonus and the randomness of which factory is selected before the supply of extra engines has been depleted.

I am increasing engine factories but that and the needs of current air frames makes getting an optimal projection at this point very difficult.

Action off New Hebrides/Fiji
No luck finding gold in Suva harbor, just sinking one lonely AMc and beating down the port facility.

Other task forces escape any other air attacks and move toward Baker Island.

Soryu Update
Almost at Truk and picking up an escort fast BB and a couple more DDs on the way by. Eventually Soryu will reuint with the KB.

Java
Another DA is called at Bandoeng which will open the door to the assault on the Capital city of Bativia.
Elements of the 4th ID are leading the way.

Singapore
I have been pretty patient, only calling 3 DAs so far. I have been hoping to bombard/bomb bleed the supply out of them, but I need to close this city down. The next turn I am going to greatly increase the frequency of Assaults to see if I can kill them off.

Burma
I have sufficient power to kick the Brits out of Meiktila but the forces in Mandalay looks like Allied High Command intends to stay and fight.

I have two good sized units running up the jungle trails toward Lasko. Hopefully that will surprise any units there.

Planning on the 9th

Too slow to catch anything worth the effort and wasting a lot of fuel, I am going back toward Baker/Canton Island.
First a little feint toward Pago Pago, which I am sure is a ghost town by now, and curl back toward the Northeast.

I am trying to figure out if I can get sufficient forces to take Luganville ro Noumea or maybe take a completely differnt approach...

Luganville - why go for a direct assault right now when there are plenty of bases surrounding it you could capture, build up, and bomb into submission?? Don't forget that the Invasion Bonus is over and unless those troops have at least 65 or better prep levels for Luganville, it would fail vs a decent defense. Isolate and then challenge the Allies to battle as its your best time to do so.

Sieges - Singapore should be your first priority, IMO. While the oil at Palembang is important, you want to minimize the damage to it when you capture the base.

Burma - As Japan, you should happy that the Allies want to fight in Clear terrain. Make him pay for this and if possible use your Tank Rgts to cut off his retreats into the jungle and eventual safety of India. Do you know what specific LCUs you are facing here??

Canton Island - What tactical or strategic reason would you do so?? Its a distraction to crushing Allies in Luganville and lower Solomons area, IMO.

SoPac - From Allied perspective, you need to capture down to and include New Calendonia. Only CV and B-17 from Suva can reach these bases for some time. Baker and Canton don't do this for ya. Take the bases south of Luganville, build them up, and start to prep troops for actual conquest of Luganville and Noumea.

Climb Rate - don't overlook this for fighters you want to use as CAP. That is why the Jack is a good plane.

Thanks, that gives me something to think about. Feeling a little directionless at the moment.
I have about 240AV (4x60) units prep for Luganville, not enough for what I saw in recon.
I didn't think about taking smaller islands other than taking Lord Howe Island, using it as a base to bomb Australia and cause general havoc.

I have some AV and Eng packed and can get there in about 4-5 days, enough time to pull KB and the Children around and refeul. AKEs were heading toward Nauru Island to support actions toward Canton Island. They also can route South to support some Bombardment runs and goad the Allies into a fight.

I will think hard about this (supply and fuel - need to plan for that too).

I'm not going to give up without a good fight. Your story is a good inspiration, even in the dark times you are fighting against now -- that there are lessons to be learned in the best and worst of circumstances.

Wow, time flies...

When work, life, game turns and getting back to updating the AAR all add up to more than there are hours of the day, I get behind on these post.

Please don't give up on me. The advice and comments by all are given serious consideration.

The last update was about planning for the 9th of April.
Game turns have been coming regularly, at least 1 a day and over the weekends got in 2 per day.
Allied High Command HQ is located in a hidden bunker somewhere in Warsaw Poland, making the time difference between commands a significant impediment to multiple turns per day. That and the slow meticulous analysis of Japan High Command stressing to overcome the learning cliff this game presents to players.

I am now awaiting Allied Orders for 17 April turn.
I hope to catch up to with the action, including whatever happens on the 17th today.

Bombing and Bombardments continue at Palembang. I do a couple of DAs between now and the 17th. Forts are reduced to 1.

Bandoeng is being bombed, bombarded and assaulted but they have a high level of forts making the coming attack on Batavia look to be a blood affair.

Java Update Apr 9-17, 1942

The attached map is the situation on Apr 9. Not enough forces to push thru. Dutch Air units start flying again. I get CarDiv2 over to add LRCAP with a fairly large Oscar unit and start beating them down.

When do the Dutch get reinforcements?
I am sure it is soon...

I have some elements of the 1st Tank Div, bought out of Manchuria, unloading (on the 17th) in Semarang and the 4th Guards Inf Div a couple of days from offloading at the same port. That should give me enough to push one of these doors open.

Once Dutch air units started flying from Batavia again, I ran BatDiv2 into port (with friends to scatter and destroy the Tiny Fleet and bombard the airfields.
Somewhat counter-productive as I would like to have that Industry/etc being blown up there, but I can't wait forever to figure out another path.

Sumatra/Palembang Update Apr 9-17, 1942

I have been bombing Palembang with just one Sally Sentai for this period. Other demands - always a balancing act - on what is more important than somethinge else.

Still, Palembang has been isolated for many months with bombardments and they are wearing down.
Just this turn (17th) I did another DA. Here are the results:

A lot of action here:
Starting on the 9th, my forces were besieging Meiktila.
Some heavy Allied air attacks on the 10th and 11th were unopposed.
I was moving AvSup to Magwe as the flight time from Chaing Mai to Meiktila would make LRCAP very fragmented.
Still I had to fly some units from Chiang Mai (Oscars) to join the Zero Sentai I sent to Magwe. By the 13th I was getting decent, not great numbers of fighters in the air over Meiktila.

The 56th Div which took the heaviest casualties from the initial Shock Attack into Singapore, has this turn (17th) finally reformed in Johore Bahru and beginning to cross the canal back into line.

QUESTION: Should I Shock Attack once the 56th gets back in the battle line?

Bataan Update: Apr 9-14, 1942

I have yet to DA Bataan.
My forces are much smaller than the enemy. I have been bombing with 4 to 5 Sentai and have noticed on the last 3 or 4 turns, there are no more Flak Burst when I bomb.

I still am taking a damaged plane or two, but the bombing results have increased (more holes in the runway, more supply dumps being blown up).

The last two turns I have started bombarding them with encouraging results.
They must be running low or out of supply.

Yes and there was some action around Luganville -- I want to break that up into a multi-post report, but 'action' on the home front is drawing me away from posting till later tonight.

But no major carrier clash like I had hoped for.
