Skipping COBRA meetings? Isn't the whole point of COBRA to discuss things of vital importance?.....

So apologies to all for daring to comment on an incident, posted by an American, that happens to be set in the USA, where a section of the society (that happened to be American because it was in Ohio) want lockdown to end - and for that policy seemingly being promoted by Donald Trump (who happens to be President of the USA), and for the fact I suggested a politician (who in this case happens to be Donald Trump) would be quick to say 'I told you so' to anyone that will listen if his/her decision proved to be the correct one (especially when set against the advice of others). Like that is an unusual position for a politician to make.....

I certainly hope my point wasn't interpreted as one borne of rage or hysteria. My goodness indeed. It was intended to be a gentle reminder to sidestep political name calling and finger wagging in general. Your six-degrees-removed-from-what-I-meant-to-say clarification above was not present in your previous post. Absent this context, your comment could have been interpreted by a reasonable reader as a slight or a smear.

What is COBRA for you lot? Here it's an acronym for continuation of health insurance beyond one's previous employer. When one leaves a company they can elect to continue the company-sponsored health insurance by paying for it out of pocket.

ETA: I also note that you dropped BJs name in there and the Conservative Government of the UK. Other than acknowledging the presence of this namedrop, I won't comment further.

I took no offense about that comment. In one way, it is correct for the self isolation yet to make it law can be problematic. In one way, for the British PM to get CoViD-19 is sort of ironic considering the initial steps that were taken - or not taken.

But the national political leaders have to go by what is best for the entire country and that is not necessarily what is best to contain the disease quickly and let it die a quick death. The US being so large and diverse, what works in one area may not be best for the entire country. I think that is why the US allowed state and local governments handle the situation. Europe is different being a lot more densely populated than the US with more people relying on mass transit than privately owned vehicles so the risks are greater. In that context, the New York City area is more like Europe than other US cities with the associated urban sprawl.

Well one could assume its a slight or smear against the President but I don't see how as I did not come down on any side. I simply stated that there are two likely scenarios (in practice there are plenty of grey areas in between too) here and that one would see the US President vindicated in his approach vis-a-vis lockdown and (like any politician would) he would not be slow in telling everyone he was right, while the other extreme... well I left hanging in the air because it ain't gonna be pretty.

Now, if someone wants to post a picture of the Danish or Spanish - or any other world leader that has agreed to relax lockdown - then I can say exactly the same thing because the same applies. Not an attack, just an observation.

Exactly. I voted for the Tories and I am British. The Tory (British) Government it increasingly appears, is going to look bad when this is over. Unlike some on these forums recently, I don't work myself up into a lather because someone attacks my country or my leader, for the simple reason that its my country and my leader. If we've (the UK) ****** up there will be a reckoning. And I know this is going to be hard on some of you out there (and you know who you are) but the same applies to your countries and your leaders - yes the EU included.

Some will come out well, some will come out badly. Are we really suggesting we aren't sufficiently grown up that we can discuss this openly?

This forum-not just this thread-has shown over the years that these grown up political talks devolve rather quickly. In real life, I would love to have a pint or two and shoot the breeze with you about politics-I think it'd be a great talk and you strike me as a bloke that is erudite and well-spoken. But this forum has stayed this forum because of its 'no politics' approach over the years. Sure, that's frequently overlooked-at least on a temporary basis. But to get at the political undertones and underpinnings of the global COVID-19 response on this forum is a bridge too far.

But by all means PM me! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Worldometers reports from Italy and Belgium today were comparatively encouraging.

Spain, France and UK stable or dropping a bit.

The University of Washington projections were updated again today (or yesterday). For the US, mortality projected at 60k (down from 68k).

Some states saw modest increases. Many saw decreases. Georgia's projected mortality cut in half, to 1,369. California at 1,658, which is remarkably modest given its size. NY at 21,812, which seems improbable since it's already at 17,671.

U. Wash. projection for UK mortality increased significantly to 37.5k from about 23k.

I noticed that, within the last 4-5 days or so that they're climbing quickly on the Deaths/M row on the ledger. I think they'll probably wind up being up there with France before all's said and done. [:(]

Sweden really increasing lately too.

Canada's done a very respectable job staying down on the Deaths/M, as has Germany and Denmark. Ex-NY/NJ, the United States would be in this ballpark, but that's our lumps.

Any thoughts as to why Germany's doing so well? Is it a demographic thing, a countermeasures thing, a medicine thing, a reporting thing (or more than one)?

A few weeks ago, there was news that Austria and Denmark would be easing countermeasures, starting a few days ago. I haven't seen any updates, so don't know if they postponed that action or proceeded. It'll be interesting to see how that turns out.

It's been pretty locked in for the USA (but not for Europe). Three weeks ago, when all the talk was about 100k to 200k mortality, U. Wash. had US projected at 93k mortality. About two weeks ago that dropped to about 83k. Then a few days later it dropped to about 61k. Then a few days later, up to 68k. Now down to 60k. So it's been pretty tight for the past week or ten days, and fairly stable for the past three weeks (compared to so many others). From what I've seen, U. Wash. projections for states have been pretty darned on target - even with the sudden re-calculations on 4/14 to count mortalities differently per CDC guidelines.
