Talking about Janes, I have a quite horrendous story to tell. Four years ago, the Swedish National Defence College moved a couple of kilometers within Stockholm to new facilities. I was a student at the college at that time. One evening, going home from school, I passed the college parking lot where they had set out some garbage containers to throw away unwanted literature, documents etc. I glanced into it, and found to my horror that the college library had culled an older, formerly archived AND complete collection of Janes Fighting Ships from 1912 to 1949 in pretty good condition (judging from the covers). Being culled, they had ripped off the covers and mutilated the pages ...ORIGINAL: AW1Steve

I just took a trip to the local used book store. Picked up a great condition copy of Janes Fighting Aircraft of WWII for $6.00. [8D]
Just glanced inside the cover, but it is apparently a reprint of the '46/47 edition that used the latest known information at the time. Should be a blast to read and browse.
Ebay is a great source for Jane's . I've built up quite a collection over the years. But unfortuanately the best source is the UK and shipping makes it unaffordable. [X(]
Oh the horror! [:(][:(][:(] WHY, OH WHY COULDN'T THE LIBRARIAN IDIOTS JUST *ASK* IF SOMEBODY WANTED THE BOOKS!?!? They did exactly that with most of the other literature about to be culled ... I've never wanted to hit a librarian more in my life than then.
Also, it would have been fun to have checked how much you could have got from an antiquarian. Not that I would've sold them if I had them.
I still get upset when I think about it. With that sad note, I'm off to bed [:(]. G'night gentlemen [>:][>:][>:]
What a waste. I've never understood the 'scorched earth' philosophy of libraries in that situation.

I know exactly what you mean about the stars. The first time I saw, really saw, the Milky Way was the first night out to sea in the Navy. Amazing. It's pretty much like that down in the Turks, and I was sure to point it out to Alex and his cousin last trip. His cousin is going with us again this year. She's a year older than Alex and they get along great, so mom and I don't have to entertain him all the time. [:D]
The clearest I've ver seen them was down in the Falklands. If I knew anything about astronomy I probably would've been impressed by the fact they were different to what I was used to. But actually they just looked like the same old stars but much clearer [:D]

I've caught some sort of man-flu. And Mrs Dixie is out tonight, what's the point in feeling slightly crappy if I can't complain so much that my nearest and dearest think I've got real 'flu? Or maybe whatever is on tonight's episode of House...

I've got agree with Mike , the brightest stars I've ever seen were at sea. Even brighter than those in isolated spots like Guam, Greenland, and Deep in the wilderness. Strangely enough , at sea is where I saw the green flash both times. I say strangley , because I've twice been on land when others around me say it, but missed it myself. At sea (or even over the sea) you can't miss it.

It's a power/ego game . I've seen museums do it too! It got a lot worse when librarians became known as "media specialists". Old time librarians would rather give up one of their children than a book. But the younger generations (last 40 years or so) often consist of burned out teachers. The books don't hold the same sort of santicity. I still freak when my wife writes in a cook book and had a hard time bringing myself to write or high-light my text books in college.![X(]
