If you want to and if the Allied carriers are elsewhere, the KB could raid the West Coast for strategic bombing points. Any manpower fires that destroy factories would be permanent destruction.

If you supersize you air groups, the CVLs and faster CVEs could be all fighters for defence. Some CAP set at 5000 feet for anti torpedo bomber work.

Allies have just been detected building up Koumac on the north tip of New Caledonia and more USN/RN/RAN/RNZN/RNN contacts are being spotted around Sydney. Without air cover from IJN CVs, the 14th Army will hold at Guadalcanal and build up an IJA base at Lunga while the IJN build up Tulagi.

NEAF will be a focus for the next few weeks with an allied infantry Regt just detected at Attu Island.
KB is moving north to hunt allied shipping in the eastern Aleutians / Alaska coast and support the capture of a few bases in the western Aleutians.

A few active service groups need their orders adjusted to let morale improve.
The basic training groups now have about 350 pilots in them (red circles) so they will train about 100 pilots/month up to 50 experience.
Going through the land based groups, 14 IJN fighter pilots reached 81+ experience last month so they will "graduate" to KB airgroups and swap for pilots still in their 70s.
I will also swap out all of CVE Hosho's fighter pilots for at least 70+ experience.

Not quite what you suggest, but I’m thinking of getting the KB into the areas along the Alaska and Canadian coast to see what easy targets are there.

The other options I thought of for the CVLs was to set their Kates to ASW patrol, but I will leave them as extra eyes on naval search with the fighters adding to defensive CAP.
One of the main reasons comes back to pilot training. By keeping DBs as the ASW aircraft it means I can find DB pilots quicker when sorting the pilot pools.
Skills training then becomes:
Kate, Nell and Betty pilots: Torpedo attacks, Naval bombing, naval search - limiting these to three skills for now will get them into active service groups quicker
Val pilots: naval bombing, naval search, ASW
Jake and Glen pilots: naval search, ASW

I also just noticed from a group I set to train naval bombing at 2k feet for the last few days that they trained normal naval bombing, not low naval, so the low naval altitude must still be 1000k’ and below.

Potentially unescorted, this Fiji class is one of the best CLs the RN gets. It is moving east past Albany which is another indication that the allies are concentrating their combined fleets in SWPAC/SOPAC.
If the RN is mostly in SWPAC, and due to the British Indian Army concentrating in NE India, conditions might be ripe for a deep Indian Ocean raid with SNLF landings to potentially cut off Colombo from resupply. I feel like I need to keep up the pressure around the map to try and force the allies to react and split their forces, and not just let them build up a large concentrated force in SOPAC.

Nick-A fighter bombers are my only hope. 84th IF Chutai just repaired the first Nick-A and the pilots are doing a quick conversion course at Saigon. I am upgrading all groups that can change to Nick for free at one group per day, by letting them take 2 x Nick to replace their 10s of Nates. The added benefit is that it will help reduce supply use during training back in Japan as less planes will be flying. Once the Nick-A “training” groups have taken their 2 planes each, I will let 84th IF Chutai fill out and move it forward into Burma. That should happen before the end of May.
Tojo-IIa is still due 9/42 but the top research factory just reached 29(1) so will start research any day now. I have 6 x Tojo-IA research factories and they are currently repaired to 29, 27, 24, 23, 21 and 18. They should all repair by the end of May, so will have Jun/Jul/Aug to research. Tojo-IIa should therefore enter production at some point in July. With the extra speed it will improve the effectiveness of IJA CAP vs allied fighters (escorts and sweeps).

CONTACT, USN CVs about 4 hexes SE of Funafuti. Mavis patrols moved forward from Tarawa to Tabiteuea to help keep them spotted. I have very few ships in the area, but have ordered a few PBs on fast transport duty to put move NW. HQ 26th Air Flotilla is only a few days from arriving at Tarawa to bring torpedoes to the area, but I am still building the runway and need a level 2 airfield before they can be used. If this is an allied ploy to spark a reaction it won’t work as KB will keep moving to NEAF to support amphibious operations in that area, starting in about 7-10 days.

90th Infantry Regiment takes replacements from Tuyun – while waiting for the turn to come back I got distracted by the Kwantung Army staff and gave them some guidance on a reorganisation. 90th Infantry Regt will become 107th Div in about 740 days, so it will catch a train back to Manchukuo to recover. As the AV of 90th Inf Regt recovers it will allow the JAAF AF Bns from 2nd and 4th Air Divs to move into China to support more bombers over Chungking.

I think that wounded pilots lost 10% experience, I know that they do lose some.

Tabiteuea airfield is size 0 but 85% on the way to size 1, Tarawa is 0 but 87% to size 1. I have 6 x Rufes at Tarawa with 70+ experience pilots and I can move some Zeros forward from Kwajalein & Roi Namur once there are runways on these atolls.

The skipper and crew are no super stars, but they take the award for best performance today. The CO’s Leadership 44 and Inspiration 37 didn’t seem to matter today, but with those stats this will be his last patrol.

One "benefit" of making a mistake with 3rd Sentai is that it can still convert to Randy for free, I just need to survive until 11/44 to do it (less with some research).

Here is the conversion plan (mainly FBs but a few other randoms in there) including where I plan to use them.
One of my main rules is that I am not going to spend PP to convert any air groups that have a withdrawal date.
Total PP for this list is 3160 but I don't have to do them all at once.

I will only change the land HQs that I need to unless I start swimming in PP one day.
If I didn't have to pay PP for I would reorganise the HQ reporting structure to the one shown here to help organise everything.

It’s frustrating spotting fighters but none coming up to meet the sweeps, even though I’d do the same as allies and not fly CAP unless I thought I had sufficient numbers. I will try not to sweep every day and pick different targets just to mix it up, but I could do with more fighters up here to sweep plus provide more defensive CAP. Sweeps will take priority apart from CAP over Magwe oilfields. The army ground units just need to learn how to fire their rifles upwards.

Pilot Baba, M. is reported as to have escaped capture. Good news. I checked the pilot reserve and this is LTJG Baba, IJN fighter pilot. He has experience 82 with 2 kills to his name. I assume he was MIA somewhere in PNG from one of the land based Zero groups there. He will move to a KB Zero group when they dock in two days time.
