[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The subs near Ceylon get no further strikes on anything larger than a DD, and several are sent home with significant damage. About 4-5 ASW TFs are roaming the waters now. Time to get out.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] Nicks are still getting to 100 feet against the big Chinese stack and receiving no AA, putting small hits on the troops. This should mean he's out of supply here, but I don't want to risk a massive defeat yet. I'll wait until he possibly shifts troops to defend the Tuyun-Kweiyang area and after more days of bombardment and steady air strikes.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] The sub flotillas are sortying again. The Allied CVs show themselves and look to be coming back for some reason again.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIAN OCEAN: [/font] My fast transports dropped a garrison unit on Car and this is going to make the base all but impregnable to assault in the near future unless the Allies are coming with more. Interestingly, the CVs that looked to be heading toward Diego circled around and caught my smaller CL led force that had unloaded and chased a group of APDs at Car. I still don't know what these ships were doing there, as none were attacked and there are still only two units there.

All subs and planes are on stand-by. I took the liberty of inserting 300 mines at Sabang and Victoria point in case of bombardments and I have 50 on subs heading to Car for the 10th. At Sabang 50 Kates with escorts are set, 65 Nells are ready from Medan, another 100 Bettys and 50 Kates from Victoria Point, 30 Betty from Chumpon and 25 Vals from Port Blair. All are aiming for one hex beyond Car which is 9 hexes for Kates and 10-15 for the 2E torpedo bombers.

There are 25-30 subs not damaged and ready to go, and there are MTBs and midget subs at Sabang plus the non-damaged CL/DD TF at Victoria Point. Only 3% moonlight. Long Lance time!

He may just be extracting his troops, or something else, but I'm ready for more invasions as well.

His SBD pilots are disappointing their CO I'm sure. That's quite a nice escape, considering the number of sorties over the cruiser. Hopefully the fires are under control with little floatation or engine damage.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Only one sub had contact with the Allied fleet, not getting a shot off. Others hover around Car just waiting for a chance.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIAN OCEAN: [/font] So now I'm not sure the purpose of the Allied CV mission back toward the Andamans. Maybe this was just a run back to hit ships I sent in to reinforce Car and see what other targets of opportunity were around. If this is the case it accomplished it's goals admirably.

The wounded CL Kiso and several DDs made their way to near Port Blair before the Allied CVs moved in from their trajectory aimed at Car and hit them with more DB and TB strikes. Over these days he sank the Kiso and five good DDs. I'm really steamed I let these ships get into harms way, and I can't afford these kinds of losses now. The IJN is sitting in port primarily just for this reason, but still I managed to lose six more very useful ships for the price of one sunk DD and a reinforced dot base. Not enough.

The Allied cruisers hit Sabang on the 10th for little damage, but somehow avoided the 320 mines there while bombarding from has close as 8000 yards. That doesn't seem right. They managed to miss all three big subs and 4 midgets stationed at and on the approaches to the base, but did sink 4 MTBs and got into a skirmish with three small DDs which got in close to 1k yards and Minekaze sank the USS Balch with a TT hit.

About 33 Nells made torpedo runs against these ships at 14 hex range and none could score a hit. Good pilots too. Not sure what is happening there.

The Allied CVs were engaged accidentally by the four DDs I sent to refuel another injured ship, and they got to 7k yards firing Long Lances, but no hits were landed. They did score 3 x 12.7cm hits on Saratoga which was nice, but not enough for such low moonlight and such close engagements. It should be a Long Lance dream engagement. If the CVs were screened then I''m surprised the escorts didn't get some hits.

From Port Blair a flight of Vals escorted by Tojos and Oscars managed to break 16 through. They had dives on the Enterprise, Saratoga and Hermes (as well as 4 who went for a DD !!???!![:@]), but scored only two x 250kg hits on the Hermes. Not exactly what I was looking for, but nice to know they could get through the CAP.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] He tried to reinforce Ramree by sea with an xAKL solo run, and it was hit and sunk by Kates from Rangoon.

Lightnings made a concerted effort to clear LR CAP over Ramree and got good results (about 2.5:1), but still left some CAP there which over three days caused the loss of 30+ transports and flying boats. I think he's going to find this is not an easy place to maintain troops at this point in the war, and if he gets the CVs involved that'll just put them again in harm's way near LBA and hordes of subs. My division is moving slowly across, and should get there

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] All subs in the IO go into small area patrols and a few move out for deep early warning search. About ten are having repairs done at Singapore and Victoria Point.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]INDIAN OCEAN: [/font] The US CVs do not reappear. Still curious here what will be next. There is also what appears to be a SAG hanging around Chittagong. Kates and Vals at Rangoon are still active.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font] All troops begin moving to the woods, and immediately Chinese troops show movement from Kweiyang and the blocking stack near Tuyun. Interestingly the troops in the river blocking hex also show movement toward Kweillin. If he's moving all of these units, sending some to the woods and some to Kweillin, firstly the ones in movement have lost their fortification. Secondly maybe few units will be here in a few moves. I'm thinking of sending the two Armored divisions over the river. Yikes. They could get trashed, but sometimes even at poor odds, tanks in China don't lose a lot of squads or devices in battle against superior forces.

There are some big decisions here. I'll post some maps soon.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]PACIFIC: [/font] No fighters in PM now. I'm reconning NE OZ bases from Milne Bay, and there isn't a lot around, confirming that this seems like a secondary theatre for both of us. Most bases on New Britain and New Guinea will not build past level 2 fields and level 1 ports, but will aim for 5-6 forts.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] While two groups of Lightnings found empty air over the troops near Ramree, my LR CAP over that base didn't react and move to cover, which was a good thing this day. Later around 10-12 transports were taken down over Ramree. I sent sweeps targeting about 80 fighters newly based at Cox's Bazaar. I imagined these were LR CAP for Ramree. Often LR CAP will defend it's own base before heading out to the assigned destination. This seems to be what happened here. All planes were set at 10k and arrived in small packets. First Nicks arrived and got about even numbers. Then the Tojos arrived and lost no planes and killed about 25 of the opposing. [:)]

Arriving perfectly after the sweeps, 25 Sallys met no opposition and wrecked the base hitting more fighters on the ground. [8D]

While writing this up I received a message from Torsten about revising our HRs. Interesting. He wants night-bombing back, obviously, as he doesn't want to have to lose bombers bombing in daylight. [8|]

Can the Japanese player actually have success without it being 'unfair?' Seems a good question lately.

I had 4 Kongo BBs get to the Allied CVs and fight for a good while landing no hits on them i spite of surprise and a few other advantages. It was incredibly frustrating, especially in this game after my KB was hit on turn two by a 22 knot BB Nevada over and over in one combat and somehow was not screened and couldn't just run away. My expectations for surface combat against Allied CVs is very low. The law of percentages has to work for my on maybe the third or four try though, right? [;)]

Why does he want night bombings back?

I understand the frustration. IJN doctrine all leads to destruction by surface elements with commanders whom long for the chance to close on the enemy and defeat him at close quarters. Wonder if the AI mechanics add a mystery level of protection for them.

He landed at Ramree with the Chindits (again, and still probably not at full strength after the Magwe adventure). This was fine, as there is no airfield and no port there so whatever he brings in will be subject to getting hit.

He tried for a few days to send transports which were intercepted (official patch interception working very well) and I think he was trying to LR CAP from Cox's himself on this last turn to see if these fighters would cover the transports. I anticipated that and sent sweeps and an air strike in at Cox's knowing that often LR CAP will protect the home field before flying over a distant base.

Sure enough, his entire fighter force was at 10k and our two high sweeps got about 8:1 on the day there.

His exact comment was; "The current rule about night bombing turned it totally useless. 50 bombers are to few to have any impact. As you've seen, I almost stopped night bombing. Your last Ki-44 sweep showed how necessary plastering the bases for those fighers is.

Next thing is LR-Cap. I have no means to stop you from killing 5-10 transports per turn, as you are CAPing my base and I can't sweep it. What can we do here? I see your need to CAP."

Interesting.

Night-bombing should be ineffective against an airfield as evidenced by trials in war, and the fact that he can still hit 3-4 planes and put 10-15 damage on a field with 50 planes every night if he chose to seems significant to me, if it's not to him. In fact he could hit 4-5 different fields with 50 bombers each and do quite a lot of damage still, so I'm not sure the problem.

So he's captured a base he can not support except at risk to his forces and now wants a rule change. I'm half thinking of letting him have it just so we can again see how silly night bombing is in it's effectiveness right now (at least using the official patch).

Well, that is basically what I said, that he has every ability to hit those bases in the day. he can still use 50 bombers to take out 3-5 fighters on the ground and put 10-15 damage on the base if he wants to soften it for sweeps the next day.

He probably liked his one massive attack enough that he can't think of doing anything else now that would actually put his forces in danger. night bombing doesn't so that's what he wants to use.

This game seems to be on hold. After Torsten's request for an HR adjustment on the night bombing he's become very busy and hasn't sent any replies to my notes on the subject. So, another break. Or maybe more. We'll see.

I've thought this before, and then he came storming back doing three turns a day at times. I just don't know.

He is in politics now, and this has seemingly made his time more sporadically busy, and I did just get a note saying he is in the middle of a campaign right now.

Interestingly his request to reconsider HRs on night bombing also included all kinds of other thoughts on limiting capabilities I've shown a proclivity toward, like air transport, ASW, and even LR CAP of the base he's sending transports to reinforce. The last one is a bit odd since he took it knowing I have bases two hexes away and he has no airfield there! (Ramree Island)

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]GAME ON (AGAIN): [/font]After a hiatus Torsten has come back to do regular turns. We trade on average one a day. I've not updated the AAR much but thought I'd take a stab today since the game is still interesting, if slow. After the big move into the Andamans Torsten has been very quiet. He still has a lot of forces in the India area as I've learned through some recent recon, but I don't know the location of the Allied CVs. I'm thinking he will simply wait until Hellcats to do something bigger now.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]SUBS: [/font] Torsten's subs have now largely been neutralized. He has stopped leaving them around the approaches to Kyushu after a few got HIT messages. They still haunt the approaches to Balikpapan, but 4 ASW TFs and two ASW air units are also here, so they haven't hit anything recently.

The IJN subs are concentrated in the Indian Ocean. About 30 are on patrol between Ceylon and the Andamans, and a few more are sitting at Victoria Point and Singers waiting, while a few are farther afield on recon and early warning missions. Only about 5 are in the Pacific, simply to get some possibility of early detection.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]DEI: [/font] Units are very slowly filling in bases to form a defense. Scenario 1 has so few troops that there are large holes all over still.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]PACIFIC: [/font]Some jousting has gone on around Port Moresby, and the Allies have sent about 100 fighters in several times, only to retreat after big losses. We've been getting about 1:1 down here, which is fine. Some Hurri IIc are in the area, which is interesting. He made a move to take Lunga, which was empty, but I've since bombed the fields and troops and the only unit here is a small garrison. He also walked to Terapo from PM but I've bombed that periodically, and it's still a level 1 field. There are four units there and it's easy to sweep and suppress any LR CAP for now anyway. After the latest sweeps I tried got less than positive results he's continued to base 120+ fighters in PM. I'm gearing up for some bigger sweeps with Tojo and A6M5 once the groups have all upgraded.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]BURMA: [/font] Burma has gone a bit quiet. There is an occasional big sweep by the Allies but no major bombing runs. I sense a building of pools and troops. He has taken and solidified Ramree Island, but lost a few transports and 4 APDs in the process.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]CHINA: [/font]This theatre has been the most active in recent months. Torsten has done a fantastic job of stymying my advances. He's got a good defensive line along the Chikhiang to Kweiyang [EDIT] line. I've not been able to break through in spite of weeks of bombarding by air and ground, bombing of nearby bases to reduce supply, and pouring supply in to keep my units well in the white. The Northern areas are static and I won't advance up there, even though there are possibilities. Due to our agreement to have a Chinese Reserve should China collapse there is no point going from the North as all retreating troops could simply pile into the mountains, and once I got to Chungking I'd have to stop anyway to give him the truce area. I'll not make such a compromise again.

It's a fun theatre, and I enjoy the maneuvering that has developed, which still involve bigger stacks as there are no stacking limits. I've got some new ideas, and still have interior lines to use, so there is possibility to get through in the future I think. I'd like to bag a bunch of troops and block the mountains mostly.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]NORTH PACIFIC:[/font] I've not taken any of the Aleutians, and Torsten is building up Shemya and Attu in particular. I'm almost certain there will be a move here at some point. I'll build out from Hokkaido, but it's likely I won't have enough troops ready come spring 43.

[font="Microsoft Sans Serif"]ANDAMANS:[/font] Torsten landed the 100th Indian Brigade on Car Nicobar the last time he sent the fleet over, and it took him a while to extract the unit. I'm thinking this is one that combined into a division and he needed it absolutely, as he sacrificed about 40-45 PBY of various US and Brit models flying them out. I have a group of Rufes on Car Nicobar that basically became and expert group with experience in the 60-75 range during this. That has to be a big hit to his search ability in late 42 as well. I know the PBY are scarce. I thought about letting it continue, but eventually decided to kill off the remaining troops as the Brit replacements are so low as well.

The Allies bought the movement into the wooded hex to the South and I was able to cross with the full Army of 4.1k AV but only got a 1:1 on Dec. 1 with heavy disablements, so now everything is again static. new ideas and movement has begun and I'll update that soon. I've been pretty lax about maximizing things in the economic system. After all of the talk about supply, LI increase and how these situations play out in the end I'm curious how this one will be different. I was very carefree about it all for the first six months as I didn't expect to last long after losing three CVs on turn 2. I took risks and banked little.

Looking back now it's still not so bad. I'm a little low on resources in the HI as I've not been watching convoys from the North to Honshu and a few were not on CS, so haven't been hauling. I've just fixed that and the 4 million on Hokkaido will start moving over quickly now.

Very little is being sent to the South Pacific. I'd like to heavily focus on New Guinea and the Marianas while leaving the Gilberts, Marshalls and Solomons almost without opposition. I'll build the area around Rabaul and New Britain a bit, but the good troops will stay back toward the more vital areas. All of this should save supply.

The fuel looks good but since I didn't take Palembang until April and Miri has just finished completing repairs to its oil, that is a bit low. Torsten also crushed the Magwe oil relentlessly. The ship usage is low and has been for some time. No KB running around and very few other ships moving other than those hauling resources.

The HI should be at 800k by 1/1/43 which is fine. I'll bank another million or more in 43 and 44, so that should be decent.

Before the new year I plan to tighten the game up and get serious about extending it since it looks to be continuing now.
