Fifth Fleet masses with 28 CVEs, 12 CVs, 7 CVLs and amphib transports carrying over 5 divisions just 7 hexes south of Dadjangas. In my most telegraphed move of the war....the amphib transports will unload at Dadjangas next turn. Dave is busy preparing a nice response for them....its going to take a couple days pf RL time for him to prepare his turn. I figure though that with some 700 fighters on the CVEs plus 250 land based fighters at dadjangas I can handle most anything Dave can throw at me.....including KB. The fast carriers will stand by just to keep the Japanese honest.

We dodged a bullet here this turn but its just a matter of time before the night bombers score some more hits so I dont want to leave Fifth Fleet exposed for any length of time.



Other than sweeping Dadjangas with Georges didnt seriously threaten the unloadings during daylight hous. Most of 5 divisions and over 60,000 supplies made it ashore without incident but this was such a major reinforcement operation that I was bound to write a few bad orders. Some of the 5 divisions accidentally unloaded at Sansopar so I will need to reboard those troops and send another troop convoy to Dadjangas before we can go on the full offensive.

Fifth Fleet will cover the retirement of the unloaded amphib transports at Dadjangas this turn.

The massive aerial bombardment planned for babeldaob finally flew this turn and knocked out the level 4 AF there with 85% damage but as so often happens in AE the bombers flew before the sweepers and many of the heavy bombers were shot up. Im going to rest most of the heavy bombers of Fifth Air Force this turn while medium bombers based at Manokwari will switch targets and bomb the AF at Peleliu.

The last time I attacked at Moulmein several months ago I lost 2000 AV but this time I lost 3000 out of 5600 AV. Im not quite sure what to say but I dont think that I will ever take Moulmein. I have the best commanders available for command and corps HQ and all the divisions and brigades. I bombarded Moulmein with every tac, medium and heavy bomber available to Tenth Air Force and the RAF for over a week while the RN bombarded Moulmein every night.

There are only 2 roads south from Burma into Thailand and I have been stopped cold on both roads. I cant go around the Japanese by amphibious assault as Ive sent most of the RN's amphib assets to the Pacific. My only other option would be to just leave a defensive line in southern Burma and commit most of SEAC to China.

FIFTH FLEET ON THE OFFENSIVE: INVASION MINDANAO


SWPAC troops mop up the remaining Japanese at Galeia.

The portions of nearly 5 divisions meant for Mindanao but accidently dropped off at Sansopar will reach Dadjangas this turn. The CVEs stand by in the Moluccas to cover this op as the fast carriers head back to New Guinea to refuel and rearm.

Sixth Army....consisting of I US Corps and III Amphibious Corps will have a difficult time capturing Mindanao. Dave has 30,000 troops at davao, 38,000 troops at Malaybalay, 10,000 troops at Cotobato and 16,000 troops at Cayagan....and all these positions except Cotobato are inn excellent defensive terrain. I US Corps will be tasked with taking Davao. III Amphibious Corps will fight along the coastal road and will take Cotobato, Cayagan, Butuan and Surigao. The 2 corps will then meet up in the mountains at Malayabatay where Im sure that Dave will make his last stand.

I havent said much about logistics but its becoming more challenging as Fifth Fleet grows in size. I dont have nearly enough AOs to refuel some 12 CVs, 7 CVLs, 20 BBs, 40 cruisers and hundreds of DDs, amphib and support ships. I started disbanding TKs in port at Sarmi to help the AOs with refueling and by the time I could finally refuel all of Fifth Fleet in 1 turn I found that I had disbanded some 38 TKs in port. With the reorganzation of Fifth Fleet thats about to occur Im sending most of those TKs back to Rabaul.

You don't have to disband the tankers for them to refuel other ships in port. Just tell the TF to "Refuel at Sea" and it will refuel from any tankers that have fuel before robbing other non-tanker ships! Usually you can make sure the tankers have enough juice. With the tanker set to unload and given sailing orders to the fuel source, it can be on its way on the same turn it finishes unloading.

What command do you use to refuel from disbanded tankers as opposed to those in a TF?
Do the tankers unload to the port while disbanded?

BBfanboy...I use the "refuel from port" command when I disband TKs in port and TKs disbanded in port cannot unload fuel at the same time so your way of doing it is more efficient. Thanx for the tip.

Davao is jungle/rough terrain so it increases defensive AV 3x and Im sure it is fully fortified so Im a bit worried about a "Moulmein" type of outcome here. This next turn we will hit Davao with some 1600 AC that are positioned within range of it.....including 200 heavy bombers based at Waigeo.

The rest of Fifth Air....based on New Guinea....will start working over Babeldaob again next turn after shutting down Peleliu over the last 2 turns.

I do have one trump card here at Mindanao that I dont have at Moulmein....Fifth Fleet.

I was planning on assaulting Davao this turn but unfortunately the bulk of I US Corps is under supplied...evidently
I cant draw supply from Dadjangas on the secondary road. I am going to dely the assault for one turn and send an emergency convoy of over 20 xAKs from Sansopar along with 3 AVDs and 8 APDs ( loaded with supplies on "fast transport) and 10 LSTs. The 4 CVE TFs will be split up to cover all these various convoys from Sansopar to Davao. In addition...nearly 80 transport AC will airlift supplies to I US Corps at Davao. Besides....if I delay the assault for a couple of turns.....maybe Fifth Air Force can disrupt a couple of more Japanese squads at Davao.

Meanwhile....the fast carriers cover the massing of an invasion fleet off New Guinea for our next round of objectives.

CV Bunker Hill....torpedoed in the Malaccas offensive in 2/44....finally makes it back to Pearl Harbor to repair her FLT damage. It will take 58 days of critical shipyard repair to complete repair of her 29 FLT damage. All other ships are pulled out of the the shipyard to expedite the repairs.

Another large convoy carrying over 100,000 supplies makes it safely to Rangoon and unloads its precious cargo.

In China....Dave continues to mass his bombers against Allied troops at Lang Son. This turn we responded by sending in hundreds of Tenth Air Force and RAF bombers to return the favor at Lang Son. A disproportionate amount of Allied armor in China has been sucked into the battle at Lang Son and now it appears as if Dave is on the move again in Wuchang. Im flying in a new anti-tank unit from India to the rail head at Tuyun and it will be immediately railed to Wuchang.



FIFTH FLEET: MINDANAO CAMPAIGN

This will probably be the last turn Fifth Fleet is heavily involved in the Mindanao campaign before everything is turned over to the Army but what a turn this will be for Fifth Fleet. Another 2 days of aerial bombardment by hundreds of tac/medium/heavy bombers on Davao but this time not a single squad is disabled.....like I said before Im seeing the "Moulmein Effect" here where the 3x terrain and fortifications renders airpower to be virtually worthless. I did say a couple of turns ago that unlike at Moulmein...we have a trump card at Davao and that trump card is Fifth Fleet. The CVEs of Fifth Fleet will cover the unloading of 20xAKs, 10 LSTs, 8 APDs and 4 AVDs at Davao and then I US Corps will launch a shock attack. Just prior to the assault however....over half of Fifth Fleets BBs and cruisers will unleash a horrific naval bombardment on Davao at point blank range. This will be the heaviest naval bombardment of the war by far and we hope to rototill the defenders into oblivion.

Dave is not flying CAP over Babeldaob and Peleliu any longer. After several weeks of P-38J sweeps and heavy bombing by Fifth Air Force the 2 island bases have been abandoned by Japanese air forces. I US Corps will pursue the retreating Japanese here and tighten the noose around Malaybatay. With the capture of Davao...we now have our main port of entry for Mindanao and we can draw supplies from Dadjangas. Davao will also give us another substantial airfield....level 4....on Mindanao.

Meanwhile....III Amphibious Corps prepares to shock attack across a river into Cotobato.

Sixth Army is finally on the move. Fifth Fleet can now be released from SWPAC duties to cover the next Allied offensive.

Ive attached a map of the southern CBI theatre. Dave and I are currently stalemated at Moulmein, Uttaradit and Lang Son. I dont see an Allied breakthrough here unless I attempt an amphibious assault deep in the Japanese rear or I transfer a significant number of SEAC troops to China.

THE AIR WAR


I havent posted plane losses for awhile but Dave is busy this weekend so it gives me some time to review the game to date. The huge naval air battles over the Moluccas and NW New Guinea in Jan./Feb. 1944 have changed the landscape of the air war. Japan has now lost 21,967 AC vs Allied losses of 17,466 AC...or over 30% greater losses. In A2A the disparity is even more pronounced....Japan has lost 11,820 AC vs Allied losses of 7244 Ac or over 70% higher!

Im attaching a scrrenshot of Japanese plane losses to date. I was a bit surprised to see the George in 6th place as far as plane losses.

I wonder how he got a one-day ops loss of 25 Helens? Did he launch a max range attack into heavy AA or CAP last turn?

BBfanboy....I believe that the Helen operational losses were incurred from a kamikaze squadron.



THE AIR WAR: APRIL 1944


Since I last posted on the air war in 2/44..... Japan has lost 4000 AC in about 10 weeks....and 3000 of those losses occurred in A2A combat.


Here is a screenshot of Allied plane losses. The C-47 Skytrains remain in 1st place due almost exclusively to operational losses flying at 10 hex(minimum) range. The Hellcats have moved into 3rd place and will soon surpass the P-40E losses as the Navy has taken over most of the fighting in the Pacific.

THE AIR WAR: APRIL 1944


And finally here are the top Allied pilots. The Marines now dominate the top pilot roster for the 1st time now as 5 of the top 8 pilots are VMF. Three of the top 7 pilots are from VMF-441....this squadron has supported the Allied advance from the Solomons up through the Bismarcks and Admiralties and New Guinea and the DEI all the way to the Philippines. In fact....6 of the 18 pilots in VMF 441 are triple aces or better. The other featured squadron here is the US Army Air Corps' 347thBG 68thBS that has fought in an air superiority mode with high altitude P-38s.

The Top Gun Navy pilots feature 5 pilots tied with 11 kills apiece. The Navy was relatively late in the war in getting involved in a big way but going forward they will be doing most of the heavy lifting. The top 5 or 6 VF squadrons are all based on CVEs as the CVEs have been involved in the heaviest fighting by far and have 7 sunk and 3 damaged CVEs to prove it. The CVEs even absorbed a full strike by KB in addition to massed land based strikes on the same turn and most lived to tell about it after shooting down nearly 1000 AC in a single turn in the Malaccas in Feb. 1942. Relative to the CVEs.... the fast carriers have been fairly expensive "toys" as they trail the CVEs in kills by a large margin. The Allies have yet to lose a single CV or CVL.

This seems to me to be almost an act of desperation for the Japanese. dave bombarded last turn and he knew that I had 5700 AV defending the hex. The war is going poorly now for Japan in the Pacific as the Allies are rapidly advancing.....over a 1200 mile advance from Sarmi to Cotabato in less than 4 months. I think that Dave is attacking here in China just to try to gain the initiative in at least 1 theatre. We are completely stalemated across the CBI from Moulmein to Sian.

I sent 2 plus US divisions, 2 Aussie divisions, 8 or 9 armored /mobile Aussie brigades and 2 UK divisions to the CBI to both try to break through from Burma into Indochina and also help stabilize China. Now that we are stalemated everywhere across the CBI...Im finding that Im short on troops in the Pacific and I now have the decision to either move most of the 5600 AV at Moulmein to China to create a breakthrough when the Russians are activated in 1945 or withdraw troops from Burma to help with the offensive in the Pacific.

Still...I think that the Japanese got off easy with this assault. They made a 1:5 attack against 5700 Av and only lost 3000 AV. At Moulmein...I lost 3000 AV assaulting a mere 1600 AV and that was with a 2:1 and a 1:2 attack.




FIFTH FLEET


The CVE TFs cover the withdrawing transports from Mindanao to Morotai where they pause to refuel and rearm. The fast carriers stand off the northern coast of New Guinea covering the massing of amphib transports for the next round of invasions in the Pacific.Just like the reinforcement of Mindanao...I had multiple amphib TFs meeting up off the coast of New Guinea and one of the TFs accidentally unloaded so there will be a pause in the action for a couple more turns while we reload the assault troops.

Ive made a major strategic change here in the Pacific due to a lack of combat troops available. I referenced this earlier when I wrote about the over allocation of Allied troops to the CBI. I now have the equivalent of about 30 Allied divisions in the Pacific. SWPAC...by far the largest land based command now that II Australian has effectively been rolled into it....has about 20 divisions and they are all either fighting on Mindanao or they are prepping for fighting on Luzon and other Philippine islands.

SOPAC has roughly the equivalent of 10 divisions and they are all prepped for the next Allied offensive into the Palaus/Carolines. Six of these divisions have been prepped for nearly a year for Babeldaob. Dave has some 55,000 defenders on Babeldaob and with max fortifications and 2x terrain it smells like another Moulmein. Unlike Moulmein however...Babeldaob is an island and at some point would eventually run out of supplies as the US Navy controls the seas. But Ive got a schedule to keep if I want to begin strategic bombing of Japan by the end of 1944 and I cant afford to waste 3 months in a massive battle over Babeldaob. So this turn I cancelled the invasion of Babeldaob.... it will be bypassed along with its neighbor Peleliu just like we earlier by passed both Truk and Ponape. Once we capture the Palaus and Marianas....Truk, Ponape, Peleliu and Babaldaon will all be isolated and will eventually starve. We've been sweeping and bombing Babeldaob for weeks now and Dave has effectively abandoned it with his air forces. He can stage AC into Babeldaob for a surprise naval airstrike any time he chooses but we will just have to deal with it. The 6 divisions prepped for babeldaob will be released to CENTPAC and they will now prep for targets in the Marianas. D Day for the Marianas is now tentatively scheduled for July 1944 but first we have some unfinished business on Luzon and in the Palaus/Carolines.

III Amphibious Corps Corps will now drive north to the northern coast of Mindanao where they will liberate Cayagan, Butuan and Siargao before joining up with I US Corps for the final assault on Malaybatay.

There are nearly 100,000 IJA troops on Mindanao but they are spread out defending numerous bases so we should be able to roll them up now one base at a time. The 25,000 IJA defenders from Davao retreated one hex to the east and I want I US Corps to hit them one more time before they reinforce Malaybatay.

I havent posted on naval losses for awhile but we have had a break in the action for 5 days so I have a chance to catch up.

Overall.....the Allies currently have 49,373 points against Japan's total of 44,425 points.

Regarding naval losses....the Allies have lost 716 ships worth 6295 points vs Japanese losses of 727 ships worth 5916 points.

JAPAN:

1 CV(Akagi-torpedoed by a sub in the Marianas)7 BB(including BB Yamato), 1 CA, 7 CL, 26 DDs, 81 SS, 40 SSX, 16 APD, 9 AO and 62 TK.


ALIIES:

6 CVEs, 7 BB(includes BC Repulse), 7 CAs, 10 CLs, 30 DDs, 94 SS, 12 AO(plus 4 small Dutch AO) and 3 TK(plus 4 small Dutch TKs).


Overall...the losses in combatant ships are fairly equal. I was a bit surprised that I had lost 94 subs but over time the losses have added up. Ive been very aggressive in using Allied subs in an anti-shipping role from Singapore/Palembang/Java up to the northern Home Islands and they have exacted a heavy toll on IJN xAKs, xAKLs and TKs( not to mention all the IJN escorts like PBs, E boats and SCs.....over 130 ships).

Im not sure if Japan's loss of 9 AOs and 62 TKs puts a dent in their ability to ship fuel back to the Home Islands.... but I do know that the Allied loss of 12 large AOs has severely affected my ability to refuel Fifth Fleet at sea now that it has grown so large in size. I almost always need to use TKs now to help refuel all the ships in Fifth Fleet.

SIXTH ARMY: MINDANAO CAMPAIGN


I US Corps pursues the defeated former Japanese garrison of Davao to the east and will assault the 25,000 strong formation next turn. Dave is trying to withdraw these troops to reinforce his 38,000 strong army in the mountains at Malaybatay. I want to rout this withdrawing Japanese army one more time to whittle it down some.

III Amphibious Corps moves north and is pursuing the former Cotabato garrison as the Japanese attempt to withdraw their troops to reinforce Cayagan. Once we take Cayagan its all over for the Japanese on Mindanao. Sure....Dave will make his final stand at Malaybatay but we will just starve them out there while the majority of Sixth Army redeploys to Luzon.

Seabees and construction engineers reach Davao but the Allied naval bombardment there was so effective it will be awhile before we can reopen the level 4 port and AF there.



FIFTH FLEET



Adm Hill's amphib TF will land the 160th Regiment at Sangi next turn. Dave has some 5000 troops there now. When I prepped 160th Regiment 3 months ago there were only 400-500 Japanese troops there but its been significantly reinforced and the 160th is all I have prepped for that island so they will have to do the job. The naval and aerial bombardment will start next turn and I have to hope that I can take the base through disruption rather than through overwhelming odds. Dave staged fighters and bombers into Sangi this turn and they will provide a nice target for Allied bombardment TFs tonight.

Im hoping to take level 4 Japanese AFs at Sangi, Ternate and Gorontalo to reduce the threat to my SLOC from New Guinea to the Philippines but its not absolutely critical to the prosecution of the war. Allied troops are marching overland to attack Gorontalo and reinforce Ternate so we will see what they can do when supported by overwhelming airpower.

Dave's trying to stretch my fighter defenses now. He swept Changsha, Dadjangas and Rabaul last turn. Dave also swept and bombed Talaud -eilanden destroying 30 AC on the ground....but he lost 80 AC in A2A vs 21 Allied AC.
Dav hadnt swept Rabaul in over a year and I was surprised by it but his A6M2s took a beating.

When I got the turn back I was surprised to see that a mini KB with perhaps 200 AC was 12 hexes NE of Mussau Is. The fast carriers of Fifth Fleet..... currently covering the loading of assault troops along the northern coast of New Guinea.... could easily reach these IJN CVLs next turn. The IJN CVLs also pose a threat to the main Allied convoy route from the US west coast to Rabaul. I think that Dave just did this to smoke out the location of my fast carriers as they havent been spotted in over 2 weeks. Im not going to sortie the fast carriers of Task Group 58 but just in case....all east and west bound convoys to and from Rabaul will be re-routed to the south of the Solomons and several squadrons of B-25D1s, SBD-5s and A-20Gs are staged into Mussau Is., Rabaul, Buka and Kusaie. If those IJN CVLs even stick around the area next turn they will be hammered by Allied land based air.


Meanwhile.....Fifth Air Force continues to reduce the Japanese AFs at Babeldaob and Peleliu.
