Message from Port Moresby Garrison to Australia Command:23rd January 1942

Recce aircraft have now been tracking large Japanese ship concentrations for three days. These have been moving south from Rabaul, then have taken a westerly course once off Shortlands, and have now rounded cape near Milne Bay. Expected landfall at our location 24th this month. Preparations fully in place as per orders of 15th January. Loss of MSW Bunbury under sustained carrier borne aircraft numbering over 100 enemy. Estimated strength of enemy forces is: 5+ BBs plus escorts, 3+ CVs plus escorts, 6+ APs plus escorts.

Ok, about to resurrect this AAR.... just bumping it up the pages.

Ok, a combination of factors have halted this AAR. Main one being time, but also a sense of how grim things can be. This is scenario 158 on the extended map.... and frankly its all been a bit of a bloody lesson for me. It may be my ineptitude, it may be bad luck, it may be the scenario, but frankly there is b****** all the allied player (me) can do apart from roll with the punches. The initial position hampers the allies severely in terms of logistics, to the point where some ships simply cannot sail as there is no fuel available for them! In this respect, as my honoured opponent has remarked, its probably the most historical opening there is. Mid march and I still am scratching round to get supplies and fuel to units. In the meantime the Japs are having fun.

So, what have I learned?
1. There is no point in sending troops to places to defend if you cannot get supplies to them....Port Moresby can be held, as can Koepang with a bit of luck in the base game, here its a case of a lot of good troops being thrown away.
2. Most bases have next to no supply in them, so defence forces are weaker, and cannot be resupplied.
3. Many airfields are very poor so any fast airlift across the pacific is stopped.... and learn that nowhere is safe under an allied LBA umbrella at this stage - two Cvs down!
4. A combination of the capture of Canton Island along with raids on other allied bases at Suva and Christmas Island has missed main troop convoys, but has severely degraded my supplies.
5. China is simply bewildering!
