AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/09/42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Balikpapan at 31,64
Japanese Ships
AP Sekko Maru, Shell hits 2, on fire
Allied Ships
SS S-37, hits 2
the war at sea starts this turn like it ended last turn! We see a sub attacking! Our sub skippers seem to get a bit cocky. S-37 didn´t launch torps and wanted to shoot it out with it´s 4 inch gun against the 3 inch gun aboard the AP. I mentioned it before, for me it really seems that the programm is ABSOLUTELY broken in terms of shell hits on subs. Two 3 inch shells hit the sub and guess what! The sys damage hasn´t even reached 10... [8|] FOW you could say, but I´ve seen that soooo often, can´t be FOW all the time. Even 5 inch shells don´t really hurt subs it seems, the 3 inch are not even worth mentioning...

PC Ch 16, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
Aircraft Attacking:
2 x IL-4c bombing at 1000 feet
we moved our IL-4c squadron to Manila just to annoy our opponent a bit. With 10 bombs each, those bombers prove to be very effective against ships, the pilots are only in the low 50s... we sink a PC... [8D]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 50,92

Hortlund evacuated Hsinyang but we captured around 5000 supplies. The Chinese offensive(s) are doing great so far! [:D] All fine as long as my troops can hold the position in the South... we spotted a big convoy coming to Pakhoi so it will be hard to defend the South if Hortlund brings even more Southern area units to China...

we moved our troops into Chengting to stop the supply production. But it is obvious that we can´t achieve anything here...
Nevertheless PzJg Hortlund seems unhappy with the situation in China as he´s not happy with our hr about NOT having Kwangtung area units in China, as he stated in his email:
Well, china is becoming a real headache. If you advance much further in the north I think we need to discuss the houserule about Kwangtung army units in China.
with my reply:
Yes, I can hear you. But what am I supposed to do? I´ve been facing a super offensive by around half a million man in the South since day one when my troops were still somewhere in the mountains and in the jungle. As they got slowly in better positions I of course marched forward in the North as I knew you more or less brought everything to the South without sufficient force in the North. Now I´m even facing 100.000 Southern Area troops in the South and to top it off you want to throw Kwangtung Area units at me also?
People complain about the fact that China is a cake walk for the Japanese when they use only the China command units, how on Earth should I have any chance if I face all the China command units reinforced with another 300.000 Southern and Kwangtung area troops?
All I have done is countered your all out strategy in the South, I don´t know how you could think about me just watching losing 150.000 men in Changsha with all my troops in the North just sitting around. Goal of my offensive in the North was to force you to redirect troops (I think that was a common tactic of counter offensives in real life also) but it seemed you didn´t even think about trying to defend the North. Now that I´m about to see Changsha surrender, my troops in the far South being in trouble fighting Southern Area units but me in the North gaining the upper hand because you pulled out your troops, I´m supposed to fight another 2000 assault points of Kwangung area troops…
Sorry, but I don´t know how I could say “yes, please bring´em on”…
Thoughts?

our discussion about the Kwangtung units goes on... [8|] I think in Steve´s opinion I made a "gamey" move because he´s in trouble in Northern China AND stalled in the South. This is due to "offensives" that I made from day one [&:] Offensives from day one?? Did I start on the railway with thousands of assault points or did he? I have still units not at the front because more than a dozen start out in the jungle or on mountains.
IMO Steve made just to many wrong decisions in China, but that´s not my fault, is it? [&:]
He moved to Hong Kong far too early because he thought I would just have my corps in this area sit and wait until he comes to destroy them. If he would have FIRST moved out of Canton, waited for reinforcements from the East and THEN move on Hong Kong, he would have no problems there.
He massed 4000-5000 assault points around Changsha leaving the whole North undefended. THEN I moved out of my bases in the North to take pressure from Changsha, but he didn´t even think about moving troops North again. My fault? [&:]
Then, as if the Japanese would have not enough troops already in China, he came with 1500 Southern area army assault points to South West of China, but he was stalled at Nanning, due to level 4 forts and a wooden hex. What am I supposed to do? Leave the base? [&:]
I think I´m supposed to act just like the AI, not to counter a move where your opponent masses everything at one place leaving the rest of the continent undefended. He´s just to stubborn to cover his flank, to accept that the 1500 Southern area assault points he brought to the South are stalled and now he wants to bring Kwangtung area units. This not even in February 42. I told him if he likes he can bring as many as he wishes, but if I see such a overwhelming force that I have no chance, I will then retreat ALL Chinese units to India and come back to Burma with 25.000 assault points in 1,5 years...
I told him that in fact it´s a BIG compliment for me that he has 1500 av from Southern area command already in China and is now even crying for help from Kwangtung area command. [>:]

[:D] this time the fort isn´t reduced and we get an adjusted av above 1000. Still, we nearly lose as many troops as the attacker but this surely has bleeded the leading unit in the attack. the urban hex helps us enormously! Hortlund seems to be really pissed off (so as I am becoming due to his oppinion). I wrote him a looong answer, but the short story is that he thinks all my moves in China are extremely gamey and wouldn´t have been possible in real life, but what he has done in China is all perfectly okay... You can imagine what I think about that and I wrote him that most times when a "plan" of someone fails the reason for him is that the opponent acted gamey... [8|] For me it was just dumb (sorry) to move nearly all units in China to Changsha and leaving the whole North open for an attack. In Hortlund´s oppinion I had to stay in my bases in the North as I shouldn´t be able to mount offensive actions there. [8|] Same in the South, I should not be able to move 4
corps to Canton to block him there, this is ahistoric but everything he did is perfectly historic. That´s why nearly the whole Pacific is Japanese. I never complained and won´t do it now, but that just for a comparison.
I described the situation in China often enough and I really find it highly disturbing that after his lousy plan failed so far, he now says I would have acted ahistorical (=gamey) and therefore he would need those Kwangtung area units as reinforcements. It´s so historic to use 4 Southern area divisions in China that I wonder if he even knows what historic is. I told him that historic isn´t what we see in 90% of the PBEMs when Japan takes all of China... but that´s what he wants to do - he failed so far, so I acted gamey... [8|] wonder if we are still playing in a month... I have to repeat it, I was expected NOT to move my troops in any way... [>:]

this is the TF that was heading to take Nandi. Smart move of Hortlund, he moved his TF to the dot base North of Suva and before the last AP sinks he unloads the fragment of the SNLF unit at the dot base... My carriers were clouded all day, so no strikes were launched, but a Dauntless on nav search hit the AP. The last couple of turns KB was sighted at Johnston but the day my carriers showed up around the Fidjis KB also left Johnston. Takes a couple of days to reach the Fidjis, even on full speed, but we will slowly retreat to a safe area until we know the whereabouts of KB...

Mizuho Maru sunk! [:)] We sunk roughly 70-75.000 AP cargo capacity, with some more probably heavily damaged. This isn´t that bad! Cargo capacity equivalent to 3 IJA divisions. This definetely hurts with the reduced capacity the transports have in Nikmod. In my game against Swift I haven´t even lost 25% of the losses Hortlund had to suffer and still I miss every ship! Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!
this is the hex South of Changsha and we opened a retreat path for our troops at Changsha, but as the Allied attack after the Japanese in the ground combat routine all our troops at Changsha had to surrender. I attacked one turn late... [8|] Nevertheless, with all our fights so far, the Japanese for sure lost more assault value then we did - even though the Japanese only have mostly disabled squads and we lost a whole Army in Changsha. We still hold out in the South were I can´t see Hortlund making any progress and now we focus our efforts in Central China. The fall of Changsha is a pity but it bought us time to build forts and it won´t be as easy to take our next bases...

I guess we won´t see an invasion of Midway as Hortlund stated in an email that his recon reports 300 guns on Midway! [:D] What a pity, but every base he tries to attack in the Pacific that I want to defend isn´t an easy target anymore. With most of his divs/bgds being wrecked (okay, let´s say damaged) in the SRA and cargo capacity lost equivalent to 3 divs I wonder if he will even go for more targets in the Pacific. If not, than the attacks on Palmyra and Johnston aren´t doing him any good IMO.

our Fortresses again dropped 1000lb bombs! [&o] Really amazing as the average exp is only 69. Unfortunately one B-17C was lost to ops this turn and only 11 are left with none in the pool... we need 48 planes to upgrade that BG and we already had 30+ B-25C in the pool when this turn a B-25 BG unloaded at an island and pulled in all aircraft from the pool as I have forgotten to set the BG to no replacements... no B-25 for my BG at Singapore... 48 B-25, 16 Hudsons and a lot of flak at Singapore could make shipping for the IJN in this area really costly. Now it takes 3 weeks until I have enough B-25 in the pool and another 2 weeks until all damaged aircraft are repaired again. This could be too late as I expect Hortlund to bring massive reinforcements to Singers within the next two weeks as Singapore is really causing him trouble. 2 of the 3 hit AKs sank later in the day!
