True , we would always do our emergency landings at Air Force bases , even if we had to fly a while to get there. If you've got to wait while they fix your plane , you might as well wait in comfort....[:D]

Maybe one of our Brits can dig this up, I think written by Frost of 2 Para at Arnhem about beating the germans in Nth Africa, Italy etc.
In a similar vein (I'll find this one) written up by an Aussie Officer in 1918 about, staying in this position, staying here dead etc!!

Major Harry Carlyle: Shall I answer him, sir?
Lt. Col. John Frost: Tell him to go to hell.
Major Harry Carlyle: We haven't the proper facilities to take you all prisoner! Sorry!
SS Panzer Officer: [confused] What?
Major Harry Carlyle: We'd like to, but we can't accept your surrender! Was there anything else?
[German officer walks off]
Lt. Col. John Frost: Well, that's that.
[the officer returns to General Bittrich, and they converse in German]
SS Panzer Officer: They rejected our surrender offer. What are your orders, Herr General?
Lt. General Bittrich: Flatten Arnhem.
Another interesting bit of trivia:
# According to the DVD edition, the real-life Col. John Frost chided Anthony Hopkins during the filming for running from house to house during the battle for Arnhem. According to Hopkins, Frost told him that a British officer would never have run but would have
shown disdain for enemy fire by walking from place to place. Hopkins claims he tried but as soon as the firing started, instincts took over and he ran as fast as he could.

They showed the same disdain during the Rev War; that's how the Pennsylvania Long Rifle became known as the "most feared widow and orphan maker" in the world.
I
suspect that this British disdain for bullets is rooted in the ancient custom of painting oneself blue before going into battle.

During Desert Storm we were tired of MREs, so after running an errand in town, we stopped at an AFB for lunch; silver tea service, tablecloths and metal cutlery!
We were dusty and dressed in BDUs w/full LBE, protective masks, and weapons; the AF personnel looked at us as if we were from Mars!
