This photo looks staged (and a bit goofy to boot) to me, but it'll be interesting if somebody can ferret out the truth.
 
For some reason, it reminds me of a photo from the other theater - the one of the German officer on the Eastern Front looking back with pistol in raised hand.  I tried to find that photo today, but no luck.  I believe this photo is genuine.

witpqs- It looks too neat and posed to be a real combat photo, if it was taken under real combat conditions in that position the picture would be more likely to be off kilter. I also like the way the American flag has fallen in such a convenient place.

I agree the flag laying there looks suspicious. But also I know when the SNLF went ashore in and around the Phillipines they took cameras with them. It´s possible the flag could have been being carried around by one of them as a trophy they took down somewhere. They come across a group of Americans and he throws it down, pulls a grenade and the camera man captures the shot.

From the angle it looks like with the explosion in the back the cameraman has hit the dirt too and is laying on the ground.

As Panzerjaeger pointed out the guys mouth with the grenade. [:D]

That soldier is wearing a war face from hell or should have been given an award for acting.

I´m undecided and will keep looking for something about the picture though.

This photo has nothing to do with WWII.

Rather, it is a picture of two Hillary Clinton campaign workers in Iowa coming to terms with the rise of Obama.

One of the unfortunate side effects of the U.S. bombing campaign in Japan was the destruction of records-records that shed some liight on Japans atom bomb project, medical experiments, and prapaganda films/photo's. Such is the risk when you set out to de-industrialize an area. I am of the opinion that there is little chance of finding the actual origin of such a picture from Japan-but good luck.

Are you not the same fellow who stated the Japanese were locked up for 6 years in concentration camps in the U.S.?[&:] For your information those camps were actually open for 2 to 3 years (the camps were opened in the summer of '42 for the most part; Japanese were orderd released in December of '44). One camp was still open till the spring of '46-the one that held Japanese toughies and those that would not take an oath to the U.S.

Elaborating: How far do you think you can throw a grenade? The enemy can certainly shoot further. If the photo was real I think the guy on the ground would either be shooting (to keep the guy with the grenade from getting shot) or ready to shoot. As it is, he is practically lying on top of his rifle, it certainly is not shouldered.

Combining that with the other elements of the picture that other posters mentioned, I suspect it is a staged photo. Sure, it could be real, but doubt it.

On a second thought, I think the origin of the pic can be tracked. Ike99, you posted the pic of a book cover. Every book must mention who made the photo or pic of the cover. Check the first pages of that book (Mark Herman etc. etc.) if you have it and see the name of the photographer, name of the pic, etc. It will be there. It must be there.

The German equivalent had a soldier throwing a hand grenade in the background and an officer with binoculars in the foreground. (Squad Leader box cover) - I am pretty sure that one was staged for the wartime magazine Signal.

That was a game then [8|] Even if it is a game I guess they should mention the name of the photographer at least. Tell us their answer, please [:)] What about the manual of the game? Are you sure they don't mention the "photographer" or source of the pic? In theory they should.

Um, Ike99, if you look at the photo of the box cover you gave in post #26, at the bottom, in fine print, reads "We won't stop shooting! -1943 Tokyo theatre billboard advertisement".

Clicking on that site, I dont get images loading. But that phrase appears about 80% of the way down, under the section titled "The Japanese Home Front At War", right hand column.

Actors? There are many pictures from WW2 maestro that appear to be made by actors or ¨staged¨ or faked in some way when in fact they are not.
